Role of the gastroenterologist in the management of the obese patient.

2017

Obesity is a highly prevalent disease worldwide, and one in which gastroenterologists can play an important role. Some digestive diseases are more common in obese patients, and preoperative evaluation may be required in some cases. Additionally, bariatric surgery can lead to digestive complications in the short and long term that require intervention, and endoscopic treatment can be an important factor in weight loss. The aim of this review is to highlight the role of the gastroenterologist in the management of obese patients who are either scheduled for or have undergone surgical or endoscopic treatment for obesity.

KCND3 is a novel susceptibility locus for early repolarization

2019

AbstractThe presence of an early repolarization pattern (ERP) on the surface electrocardiogram (ECG) is associated with risk of ventricular fibrillation and sudden cardiac death. Family studies have shown that ERP is a highly heritable trait but molecular genetic determinants are unknown. We assessed the ERP in 12-lead ECGs of 39,456 individuals and conducted a two-stage meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies (GWAS). In the discovery phase, we included 2,181 cases and 23,641 controls from eight European ancestry studies and identified 19 genome-wide significant (p<5E-8) variants in the KCND3 (potassium voltage gated channel subfamily D member 3) gene with a p-value of 4.6E-10. …

Bndocrinopathic Constitutions and Pathology of War*

1919

The clinical study of the internal secretions opens a vast field of research, so far little known, notwithstanding its great value in practical medicine. Particularly important are those states of hormonic imbalance which are at the border line between health and disease, and which represent either latent or mild endocrinopathic conditions, real endocrine diatheses or endocrinopathic temperaments. It is already understood that for each of the best known endocrine glands, in addition to frank malfunctions there must be recognized minor degrees of perturbation giving rise to the endocrinopathic habitus. To the French writers, especially Levi and Rotschild, we owe much of our knowledge of the …

Longitudinal Study on Growth and Body Mass Index before and after Diagnosis of Childhood Craniopharyngioma

2004

Abstract We analyzed whether childhood craniopharyngioma predisposes to obesity and growth impairment. Height/length, body mass index (BMI), and hypothalamic involvement were evaluated in 90 patients at standardized ages and time points before, after, and at the time of diagnosis. Relevant decreases in height sd score (SDS) started at 10–12 months of age and persisted until diagnosis of childhood craniopharyngioma. Relevant increases in BMI SDS were detectable between 4 and 5 yr of age. Postoperative BMI SDS (yr 1–6) had a weak positive correlation with BMI SDS at the time of diagnosis. In linear regression analysis, hypothalamic tumor involvement (P < 0.001), ponderal index at birth…

Distribution of Ha-ras alleles in patients with colorectal cancer and Crohn's disease.

1991

The allele distribution of the Ha-ras gene on chromosome 11p was analysed by the restriction fragment length polymorphism of the enzymes Mspl/Hpall in 238 individuals. The investigation covered 116 patients with colorectal carcinoma and 122 patients with Crohn's disease, representing two patient populations with the same ethnic origin, one with a malignant and the other a benign disease of the same organ system. A total of 17 different alleles were detected belonging to the common, intermediate, and rare classes according to the original nomenclature of Ha-ras alleles. Patients with Crohn's disease showed no difference in the distribution of Ha-ras alleles when compared with expected freque…

The Potential Use of Resveratrol for Cancer Prevention.

2019

In addition to the traditional treatments of cancer and cancer prevention, the use of natural compounds, especially those found in food, should be considered. To clarify if resveratrol has the potential for cancer prevention and the possibility of use in therapy, the following must be taken into account: data from epidemiology, clinical protocol (case and control), preclinical studies (lab animals), use of established cell lines as models of cancer cells, test tube assays (enzymes activities), and requirements of nanotechnologies in order to discover new drugs to fight cancer. From this perspective and future expected advances, more information is needed such as improved efficacy, methods o…

Neuroinflammatory and behavioral susceptibility profile of mice exposed to social stress towards cocaine effects.

2021

Using the social defeat (SD) model, numerous studies have shown that stressed mice display an enhanced response to the motivational effects of cocaine in the self-administration (SA) and conditioned-place preference (CPP) paradigms. However, not all subjects exposed to stress express its harmful effects. Some are particularly susceptible to the deleterious effects of repeated SD, while resilient mice successfully cope with stressful experiences and display adjusted psychological functioning after stress. Vulnerability to develop stress-related disorders, such as depression, has been linked to coping strategies and more recently to individual differences in the immune system. However, no stu…

A Role for Leukocyte-Derived IL-1RA in DC Homeostasis Revealed by Increased Susceptibility of IL-1RA-Deficient Mice to Cutaneous Leishmaniasis

2011

Dendritic cell (DC)-derived IL-1α/β plays a critical role in the induction of T helper type 1 (Th1)-dependent immunity against Leishmania . DCs from susceptible BALB/c mice produce less IL-1α/β when compared with resistant C57BL/6 mice, contributing to aberrant Th2 development and ultimate death of infected mice. We have extended our studies of the role of IL-1 in leishmaniasis using IL-1RA -/- BALB/c mice that are characterized by upregulated IL-1 receptor signaling. Unexpectedly, infection of IL-1RA -/- mice led to significantly worsened disease outcome with larger lesions, dramatically higher parasite burdens, and decreased IFN-γ production by antigen-specific T cells. We determined that…
