OECD:n raportissa (2015) esitetään tuloerojen vähentävän maan inhimillistä pääomaa. Raportin estimoinneissa havaittiin tuloerojen heikentävän vähän kouluttautuneiden perheiden osuutta korkeakoulutetuista. Tässä tutkielmassa selvitetään samalla aineistolla ja samanlaisilla estimoinneilla tätä yhteyttä. Tämän työn estimoinneissa tutkitaan tuloerojen lisäksi logaritmoitujen lukukausimaksujen ja opintotuen yhteyttä korkeakoulutuksen todennäköisyyteen. Näillä uusilla muuttujilla pyritään selvittämään johtuuko tuloerojen negatiivinen yhteys korkeakoulutukseen rahoitusongelmista vai muista tekijöistä. Flat bands, Dirac cones, and atom dynamics in an optical lattice

We study atoms trapped with a harmonic confinement in an optical lattice characterized by a flat band and Dirac cones. We show that such an optical lattice can be constructed which can be accurately described with the tight binding or Hubbard models. In the case of fermions the release of the harmonic confinement removes fast atoms occupying the Dirac cones while those occupying the flat band remain immobile. Using exact diagonalization and dynamics we demonstrate that a similar strong occupation of the flat band does not happen in bosonic case and furthermore that the mean field model is not capable for describing the dynamics of the boson cloud.

Tutkimus kartoittaa ikäihmisten teknologiankäyttötaitoja sekä niihin vaikuttavia tekijöitä. Tutkimuksen kohteena ovat Suomessa asuvat yli 65-vuotiaat ikäihmiset. Verrokkiryhmänä ovat alle 13-vuotiaat lapset. Tutkimus on käyttäjätutkimus, jossa tutkittiin eroa koetussa ja mitatussa käytettävyydessä kahdella eri ikäryhmällä. Tutkittavat tekivät erilaisia tehtäviä pöytätietokoneella ja tabletti-tietokoneella. Käytettävyyttä tutkittiin suorituskykymittauksilla ja käyttäjäkokemusta ääneenajattelulla ja kyselylomakkeilla. Human–elephant conflict (HEC) is a common problem for rural populations in sub-Saharan Africa. Recent studies have shown that willingness to tolerate wildlife is largely a function of perceived risks and benefits, but most technical assessments are limited to the immediate cause of the conflict and neglect the broader socioeconomic and political contexts. Peatland restoration via rewetting aims to recover biological communities and biogeochemical processes typical to pristine peatlands. While rewetting promotes recovery of C accumulation favorable for climate mitigation, it also promotes methane (CH4) emissions. The potential for exceptionally high emissions after rewetting has been measured for Central European peatland sites previously grazed by cattle. We addressed the hypothesis that these exceptionally high CH4 emissions result from the previous land use.
