C4-like photosynthesis and the effects of leaf senescence on C4-like physiology in Sesuvium sesuvioides (Aizoaceae).
2019
Sesuvium sesuvioides represents a young C4 lineage with C4-like metabolism: CO2 compensation points range between C4 and C3–C4 intermediate values, and Rubisco was detected in bundle sheath and mesophyll.
Daphnia invest in sexual reproduction when its relative costs are reduced
2018
The timing of sex in facultatively sexual organisms is critical to fitness, due to the differing demographic consequences of sexual versus asexual reproduction. In addition to the costs of sex itself, an association of sex with the production of dormant life stages also influences the optimal use of sex, especially in environments where resting eggs are essential to survive unfavourable conditions. Here we document population dynamics and the occurrence of sexual reproduction in natural populations of Daphnia magna across their growing season. The frequency of sexually reproducing females and males increased with population density and with decreasing asexual clutch sizes. The frequency of…
A Revision of Sesuvium (Aizoaceae, Sesuvioideae)
2017
Sesuvium and Cypselea are closely related succulent genera within the Sesuvioideae (Aizoaceae). Since Cypselea is nested in Sesuvium in molecular studies and both genera share traits separating them from other members of the subfamily, we propose to include Cypselea in Sesuvium. Sesuvium (incl. Cypselea) comprises 14 species and is distributed worldwide with centres of diversity in southern Africa and North and Central America. Sesuvium comprises erect to procumbent herbs with opposite leaves that often bear conspicuous sheath-like lateral appendages on the petioles (pseudostipules). These and the many-seeded capsules are diagnostic traits, separating Sesuvium from the closely related gener…
Gut Microbiome Associates With Lipid-Lowering Effect of Rosuvastatin in Vivo
2018
Source at https://doi.org/10.3389/fmicb.2018.00530 . Background: Statin has been widely used to treat hyperlipidemia because of its high potency in decreasing cholesterol levels. The present study aimed to examine the lipid-lowering effect of rosuvastatin and the composition, diversity and species abundance of gut microbiome in association with rosuvastatin efficacy. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ChiCTR-ORC-17013212 at the First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University, November 2, 2017. Results:Totally 64 patients with hyperlipidemia were treated with 10 mg/day of rosuvastatin for 4-8 weeks. Blood lipid indicators triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein (HDL), lo…
E4BP4/NFIL3 modulates the epigenetically repressed RAS effector RASSF8 function through histone methyltransferases
2018
RAS proteins are major human oncogenes, and most of the studies are focused on enzymatic RAS effectors. Recently, nonenzymatic RAS effectors (RASSF, RAS association domain family) have garnered special attention because of their tumor-suppressive properties in contrast to the oncogenic potential of the classical enzymatic RAS effectors. Whereas most members of RASSF family are deregulated by promoter hypermethylation, RASSF8 promoter remains unmethylated in many cancers but the mechanism(s) of its down-regulation remains unknown. Here, we unveil E4BP4 as a critical transcriptional modulator repressing RASSF8 expression through histone methyltransferases, G9a and SUV39H1. In line with these …
Soil fungi invest into asexual sporulation under resource scarcity, but trait spaces of individual isolates are unique
2022
During the last few decades, a plethora of sequencing studies provided insight into fungal community composition under various environmental conditions. Still, the mechanisms of species assembly and fungal spread in soil remain largely unknown. While mycelial growth patterns are studied extensively, the abundant formation of asexual spores is often overlooked, though representing a substantial part of the fungal life cycle relevant for survival and dispersal. Here, we explore asexual sporulation (spore abundance, size and shape) in 32 co-occurring soil fungal isolates under varying resource conditions, to answer the question whether resource limitation triggers or inhibits fungal investment…
Asem ja uusi kansainvälinen järjestys : Euroopan ja Aasian yhteistyön vaikutus valtioiden suvereniteettiin
2010
Tutkimus tarkastelee Euroopan ja Aasian maiden yhteistyötä Asem-prosessin puitteissa. Asem-prosessi on monien hallintoviranomaisten kokousten kokonaisuus, jonka tärkeimmät päätökset tehdään kahden vuoden välein järjestettävissä hallitusten päämiesten huippukokouksissa. Tutkimuksen tarkoitus on selvittää, kuinka paitsi maanosien sisäinen integraatio, myös niiden välinen yhteistyö vaikuttavat osallistujavaltioiden suvereniteettiin. Tutkimuksen aineiston muodostaa Asem-huippukokousten yhteydessä julkaistut puheenjohtajan lausunnot ja huippukokouksissa julkaistut poliittiset ja temaattiset julistukset. EU:n ja Aseanin toiminnan kuvaamisessa olen lisäksi käyttänyt lähteinä näiden organisaatioide…

2015
Mana bakalaura darba tēma ir „Nākotnes perspektīvas suverēnās labklājības fondu darbībā Persijas Līča Sadarbības Padomes reģionā”. Mērķis ir izpētīt, suverēnās labklājības fondu attīstību nākotnē. Uzdevumi - starptautiskās finanšu sistēmas raksturojums, reģiona un turētājvalstu ekonomisko rādītāju, dokumentācijas un informācijas avotu analīze. Pētījums - trīs suverēnās labklājības fondu rādītāju analīze, stratēģiju noteikšana, darbības apjoma pieauguma radītāju analīze un secinājumu veidošana. Pētījuma rezultāti apstiprina, ka suverēnās labklājības fondi Persijas Līča Sadarbības padomes reģionā ir valstu alternatīva nākotnes paaudžu labklājības veidošanā.
Rosuvastatin Prevents Conduit Artery Endothelial Dysfunction Induced by Ischemia and Reperfusion by a Cyclooxygenase-2–Dependent Mechanism
2010
ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to determine whether single-dose rosuvastatin (40 mg) protects against ischemia and reperfusion (IR)–induced endothelial dysfunction in humans and whether this effect is cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 dependent.BackgroundAnimal studies have demonstrated that rosuvastatin can limit damage and improve recovery after IR.MethodsIn a double-blind, parallel design, 20 volunteers were randomized to a single dose of oral rosuvastatin (40 mg) or placebo. Twenty-four hours later, endothelium-dependent, flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the radial artery was measured before and after IR (15 min of upper arm ischemia followed by 15 min of reperfusion). In a separate protoc…
Ezetimibe/Simvastatin 10/20 mg versus Rosuvastatin 10 mg in high-risk hypercholesterolemic patients stratified by prior statin treatment potency
2010
Abstract Objective This post-hoc analysis compared the lipid-altering efficacy of Ezetimibe/Simvastatin 10/20 mg (EZ/Simva) versus Rosuvastatin 10 mg (Rosuva) in patients stratified by statin potency/dose prior to randomization. Methods Patients with elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) despite prior statin treatment (n = 618) were randomized 1:1 to EZ/Simva 10/20 mg or Rosuva 10 mg for 6 weeks. Percent change from baseline in lipids and attainment of lipid targets were assessed within each subgroup (low potency n = 369, high potency n = 249). Consistency of the treatment effect across subgroups was evaluated by testing for treatment-by-subgroup interaction. No multiplicity …
