Codeswitching in the comedy of George Lopez

2011

This paper explores the intersectionality of language, culture and identity in the performance of a U.S.-born bilingual Spanish-English speaking comedian, George Lopez. Codeswitches in his comedy are examined through the speaker’s relationship to the audience using Bell’s (1984) theory of audience design. Two specific performances with two distinct audiences are compared using the following questions: How does a bilingual comedian, Lopez, use language mixing to underscore his Latino identity? How does he construct his audience through his choice of codes? How and when does he accommodate monolingual English speaking audiences? I conclude that Lopez intentionally matches his code choice to c…

Determination of macrolide antibiotics in meat and fish using pressurized liquid extraction and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry

2008

We developed a method for determining the quantities of seven macrolide antibiotics in meat and fish by using pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry with electrospray ionization (LC-(ESI)MS). The PLE was optimized with regard to solvents, temperature, pressure, extraction time and number of cycles. The optimum conditions were: methanol as the extraction solvent; a temperature of 80 degrees C; a pressure of 1500psi; an extraction time of 15min; 2 cycles; a flush volume of 150% and a purge time of 300s. All recoveries for macrolide antibiotics were over 77% at 200mug/kg, except for erythromycin, which was 58%. The repeatability and reproducibility on d…

Direct infusion mass spectrometry as a fingerprint of protein-binding media used in works of art

2005

A direct infusion mass spectrometry method for the characterization of proteinaceous glues from binding media used in pictorial works of art prior to conservation or restoration treatment is proposed. Amino acids are released by acid hydrolysis and dissolved in a mixture of acidic water and ethanol. This mixture is directly infused into a mass spectrometer without any derivatization. The mass spectrometer is operated in positive ion electrospray mode (ESI-MS) to yield [M+H]+ ions for the amino acids. Relative amounts of each amino acid are calculated for each protein (beef and porcine gelatines, albumin, casein and egg). The analyzed proteins were satisfactorily distinguished. The method is…

Guarana seed extracts as a useful strategy to extend the shelf life of pork patties: UHPLC-ESI/QTOF phenolic profile and impact on microbial inactiva…

2018

Abstract The antioxidant and antimicrobial effects of guarana seed extracts (GSE) added to pork patties were evaluated for 18 days storage at 2 ± 1 °C. Five treatments were prepared: i) without natural antioxidant [control (negative control)], ii) with BHT at 200 mg/kg (positive control), and iii) with three different concentrations: 250  mg/kg (guarana seed low dose-GSL), 500  mg/kg (guarana seed medium dose-GSM) and 1000  mg/kg (guarana seed high dose-GSH) of guarana extracts, respectively. The pH, instrumental colour (CIE L*, a*, b*), total viable counts (TVC), Pseudomonas spp. counts and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) counts, 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and carbonyl co…

Comparison of magnetic resonance imaging of inhaled SF6 with respiratory gas analysis

2008

Magnetic resonance imaging of inhaled fluorinated inert gases ((19)F-MRI) such as sulfur hexafluoride (SF(6)) allows for analysis of ventilated air spaces. In this study, the possibility of using this technique to image lung function was assessed. For this, (19)F-MRI of inhaled SF(6) was compared with respiratory gas analysis, which is a global but reliable measure of alveolar gas fraction. Five anesthetized pigs underwent multiple-breath wash-in procedures with a gas mixture of 70% SF(6) and 30% oxygen. Two-dimensional (19)F-MRI and end-expiratory gas fraction analysis were performed after 4 to 24 inhaled breaths. Signal intensity of (19)F-MRI and end-expiratory SF(6) fraction were evaluat…

The SWI/SNF subunits BRG1 affects alternative splicing by changing RNA binding factor interactions with RNA

2019

AbstractBRG1 and BRM are ATPase core subunits of the human SWI/SNF chromatin remodelling complexes. The function of the SWI/SNF complexes in transcriptional initiation has been well studied, while a function in alternative splicing has only been studied for a few cases for BRM-containing SWI/SNF complexes. Here, we have expressed BRG1 in C33A cells, a BRG1 and BRM-deficient cell line, and we have analysed the effects on the transcriptome by RNA sequencing. We have shown that BRG1 expression affects the splicing of a subset of genes. For some, BRG1 expression favours exon inclusion and for others, exon skipping. Some of the changes in alternative splicing induced by BRG1 expression do not re…

Evaluating currency crises: the case of the European monetary system

2007

In this paper we examine the nature of currency crises. We ascertain whether the currency crises of the European Monetary System (EMS) were based either on fundamentals, or on self-fulfilling market expectations driven by extrinsic uncertainty. In particular, we extend previous work of Jeanne and Masson (J Int Econ 50:327–350, 2000) regarding the evaluation of currency crisis. We contribute to the existing literature proposing the use of Markov regime-switching with time-varying transition probability model. Our empirical results suggest that the currency crises of the EMS were not due only to market expectations driven by external uncertainty, or ‘sunspots’, but also to fundamental variabl…

Imperfect information and consumer inflation expectations:evidence from microdata

2017

This paper explores which factors trigger an adjustment in consumers’ inflation expectations and looks at the implications regarding forecast errors. We find support for imperfect information models, as inflation volatility and news trigger an adjustment in expectations. Furthermore, we document that individual expectations become more accurate if they have been adjusted.
