REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLANNING STRATEGY: DESIGNING A DYNAMIC INTEGRATED MODEL FRAMEWORK FOR THE SICILY REGION

Over the past decades, Sicily Region has experienced periods of stagnation, recession and sporadic slow economic growth, lagging always behind the national performance. As a consequence of globalization and deregulation, the relevance of regions in national economies has changed considerably in the last decades. Recognizing the importance of the Sicily region in the development process at national level, the purpose of the research is to further explore the dynamics governing the behaviour of the regional economic system. The goal is achieved by the use of simulation modelling: a model framework for the regional economic system is designed by integrating the System Dynamics (SD) methodology…

Fostering Entrepreneurs’ Capabilities to Outline Sustainable Strategies in ‘Stunted’ SMEs through Modelling and Simulation: a Dynamic Resource Based …

The literature recognises the phenomenon of ‘dwarf’ or ‘stunted’ small and micro firms (in Italian nanismo aziendale) and that they might represent potential lost opportunities for owners and the local economy. Based on a field survey conducted by Bianchi et al. (2003) and the analysis previously developed by the authors of this paper in sketching a simple ‘insight’ model to simulate the behaviour of such firms (Bianchi & Winch, 2005), this work aims to show further research developments in the effort to better understand the business dwarfism phenomenon. A system dynamics model replicating the basic no-growth, cyclical behaviour attributed to “stunted” SMEs is firstly analysed. Alterna…

Structural and Dynamical Complexities of Risk and Catastrophe Systems: an Approach by System Dynamics Modelling

2009

Risk and catastrophe are complex systems. Within the scope of this paper, we focus our attention on structural and dynamic complexities of catastrophes and on the possibility of modelling and simulating its double complexity with a formal and methodological framework: the General Systems Theory and System Dynamics modelling. Then we briefly propose a model of urban catastrophe related to a flood. After we propose some ways of research allowing exceeding the limits related to the modelling.

A DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT APPROACH TO FOSTER MUNICIPAL POLICE STRATEGIES IN PALERMO TO CONTAIN SPEEDING AND DRUNK DRIVING

Road related fatalities kill 1,25 million people every year around the world and rank as the ninth cause of death according to some recent statistics by the WHO. Actions to reduce this phenomenon have been taken, at different institutional levels, with promising results, particularly in western societies, where the magnitude of such occurrences has been almost halved in the last decade. Nevertheless the level of attention, with regard to road safety, will have to be kept high if a further reduction of this phenomenon is to be reached. Traditional road safety-related approaches mainly focus on prevention through the constant improvement of vehicles’ safety devices and the rationalization of …

THE DYNAMICS OF LEARNING AND NEGATIVE EMOTION IN WORKPLACE CONFLICT

Research Aim This study uses a systemic approach to explore the dynamics of learning and negative emotion in workplace intraorganisational conflict. Our dynamic hypothesis was that the endogenous dynamics between the level of intraorganisational conflict and the levels of learning and negative emotion, which are accumulating in the organisation as by-products of conflict, are causing the conflict level to oscillate. Methods A systematic literature review identified two problematic, “Undesired” or “Feared” patterns of intraorganisational conflict development over time (Group Disintegration, Groupthink), and one “Desired” pattern of moderate conflict level (Cohesion and Resilience), which com…

A novel process-based model of microbial growth: self-inhibition in Saccharomyces cerevisiae aerobic fed-batch cultures

2015

Microbial population dynamics in bioreactors depend on both nutrients availability and changes in the growth environment. Research is still ongoing on the optimization of bioreactor yields focusing on the increase of the maximum achievable cell density. A new process-based model is proposed to describe the aerobic growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cultured on glucose as carbon and energy source. The model considers the main metabolic routes of glucose assimilation (fermentation to ethanol and respiration) and the occurrence of inhibition due to the accumulation of both ethanol and other self-produced toxic compounds in the medium. Model simulations reproduced data from classic and new expe…

Improving problem solving and creativity through use of complex-dynamic simulations

2002

This article presents an instructional method to improve problem solving and creativity by employing computer-based simulations. The instructional method described is based upon empirical research conducted by the authors. The simulation presents contextually meaningful problem situations that require learners to analyze and prepare solution proposal(s). Following the learner input, the simulation assesses the proposal and offers back to the learners the consequences of their decisions while also iteratively updating the situational conditions. This type of simulation, unlike conventional simulations that are used for acquisition of knowledge, is complex-dynamic, requiring the learner to fu…

A Comparison between RMS and EMT Grid-Forming Implementations in MATLAB/Simscape for Smart Grids Dynamics

2022

The article presents a comparison between phasor RMS and EMT models for grid-forming converters. The specific aspects related to the implementation in Simscape Electrical of MATLAB/Simulink are discussed for both RMS and EMT time-domains. The comparison between the different implementations is performed with the simulation of two widely studied grid-forming schemes, the virtual synchronous machine and the power-synchronization control. The simulation-based comparison examines transient phenomena with different characteristics and time scales, including frequency transients, phase jumps and short-circuit events. Specific indications regarding limitations and suitability of grid-forming model…
