A Telemetry, Tracking, and Command Antennas System for Small-Satellite Applications
2019
Circularly polarized (CP) antennas are used in space applications for telemetry tracking and command (TT&
Sports teams as complex adaptive systems: manipulating player numbers shapes behaviours during football small-sided games
2016
Small-sided and conditioned games (SSCGs) in sport have been modelled as complex adaptive systems. Research has shown that the relative space per player (RSP) formulated in SSCGs can impact on emergent tactical behaviours. In this study we adopted a systems orientation to analyse how different RSP values, obtained through manipulations of player numbers, influenced four measures of interpersonal coordination observed during performance in SSCGs. For this purpose we calculated positional data (GPS 15 Hz) from ten U-15 football players performing in three SSCGs varying in player numbers (3v3, 4v4 and 5v5). Key measures of SSCG system behaviours included values of (1) players’ dispersion, (2) …
Video Scene analysis for a configurable hardware accelerator dedicated to Smart Camera
2012
International audience; According to the Center for Research and Prevention of Injuries report, fall-caused injuries of elderly people in UE- 27 are five times as frequent as other injury causes which reduce considerably their mobility and independence. Among the diverse applications of computer vision systems, object detection and event recognition are of the most prominent related recognition and motion analysis, that is, researchers had the idea to spread it in fall detection. The fall event, extracted automatically from the video scene represents itself, crucial information that can be used to alert emergency. In this context, visual information on the corresponding scene is highly impo…
FPGA-based smart camera : industrial applications
2013
International audience; For the last two decades and still today, smart cameras offer innovative solutions for industrial vision applications. This kind of system associates a flexible image acquisition with high-speed processing possibilities. Many smart camera designs are based on FPGA components to obtain these two features. Indeed, the FPGA enables the CMOS sensor to be controlled and therefore to propose a configurable acquisition according to the application constraints (i.e. dynamic windowing). The configurable structure of a FPGA represents a key advantage for modifying the embedded processing (even on-the-fly using dynamic reconfiguration). Meanwhile, FPGA components offer a large …
An Intrusion Detection System for Fog Computing and IoT based Logistic Systems using a Smart Data Approach
2016
The Internet of Things (IoT) is widely used in advanced logistic systems. Safety and security of such systems are utmost important to guarantee the quality of their services. However, such systems are vulnerable to cyber-attacks. Development of lightweight anomaly based intrusion detection systems (IDS) is one of the key measures to tackle this problem. In this paper, we present a new distributed and lightweight IDS based on an Artificial Immune System (AIS). The IDS is distributed in a three-layered IoT structure including the cloud, fog and edge layers. In the cloud layer, the IDS clusters primary network traffic and trains its detectors. In the fog layer, we take advantage of a smart dat…
A PC-based instrument for automatic monitoring and control of a CPVT power plant
2014
A PC-based instrument has been developed for the monitoring and control of a concentrated photovoltaic and thermal (CPVT) power plant. The instrument allows acquiring both electrical and thermal quantities. Moreover it implements the solar tracking algorithm used to optimize the power production.
The Smart Land Paradigm in the Sicani Territorial Archipelago
2017
With the aim to identify the specific identities of the Sicani territory, to interpret them in a perspective of innovative development and to define strategies capable of intercepting programming in progress, it has been deepened the “territorial archipelago” theoretical framework , recognizing it into the Sicani territory and trying to use it as the base of a possible development of a Smart Land, as a “non-gravitational” paradigm able to recognize and to direct the new relations of the rur-urban local systems.
Choosing the Right Medium for Municipal eParticipation Based on Stakeholder Expectations
2012
Published version of a chapter in the book: Electronic Participation. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-33250-0_3 This paper examines the expectations and communication needs of relevant stakeholder groups for municipal eParticipation in a small Norwegian municipality. We identified relevant stakeholder groups with the municipality, and asked them about their communication preferences through a combined Delphi study and survey approach. The findings show that information about local issues, information about issues relevant for the individual stakeholder, and dialogue on business’ needs and employment are the three most important communication needs. …
Network-based indices of individual and collective advising impacts in mathematics
2020
AbstractAdvising and mentoring Ph.D. students is an increasingly important aspect of the academic profession. We define and interpret a family of metrics (collectively referred to as “a-indices”) that can potentially be applied to “ranking academic advisors” using the academic genealogical records of scientists, with the emphasis on taking into account not only the number of students advised by an individual, but also subsequent academic advising records of those students. We also define and calculate the extensions of the proposed indices that account for student co-advising (referred to as “adjusted a-indices”). In addition, we extend some of the proposed metrics to ranking universities a…
Domini collettivi, forme di autogoverno per la gestione degli ecosistemi e lo sviluppo locale
2020
One of the most ancient forms of self-government of environmental systems is that relating to the management of civic uses and collective lands, in which a specific local community controls and manages sustainable resources (fields, pastures, woods, etc.) sustainably and efficiently. The paper aims to briefly retrace the salient stages of the history of collective domains, and to explore their value as “goods that are produced by long co-evolutionary processes between human settlement and environment” (Magnaghi 2015, 139) highlighting the appearance of complex socio-ecological systems (SES). Finally, using the theory developed by Elinor Ostrom to analyze the sustainability of SES (Ostrom 20…
