Deep in the Dark: A Novel Threat Detection System using Darknet Traffic

2019

This paper proposes a threat detection system based on Machine Learning classifiers that are trained using darknet traffic. Traffic destined to Darknet is either malicious or by misconfiguration. Darknet traffic contains traces of several threats such as DDoS attacks, botnets, spoofing, probes and scanning attacks. We analyse darknet traffic by extracting network traffic features from it that help in finding patterns of these advanced threats. We collected the darknet traffic from the network sensors deployed at SURFnet and extracted several network-based features. In this study, we proposed a framework that uses supervised machine learning and a concept drift detector. Our experimental res…

Seismic behavior of structures equipped with variable friction dissipative (VFD) systems

2021

Usually, to mitigate the stresses in framed structures, different strategies are used. Among them, base isolation, viscous/friction/metallic yielding dampers and tuned mass dumpers have been widely investigated. Fluid Viscous Dampers (FVD) probably result the most diffused for the simplicity in the applications. However, these type of dampers request limited interstorey drifts to avoid dangerous effects. Further, they have an elevate cost. On the contrary, friction dampers are not so expensive but request high interstorey drifts to give a significant contribute in the dissipation of energy during an earthquake. In this paper an approach for the energy dissipation by friction, modified with …

Methodological Aspects of Infrared Thermography in Human Assessment

2016

Infrared thermography presents some important advantages in the determination of skin temperature, as it is a safe, non-invasive and non-contact technique with wide applications in the field of sports sciences. Like many others techniques, valid measurement in thermography requires following strict methodological steps from data acquisition to analyses and interpretation. In this chapter, we discuss the methodological aspects that must be taken into account when acquiring thermic images, along with some practical examples and recommendations based on the current literature.

Mental Models vs Integrated Models: Explanations of Syllogistic Reasoning

1996

To compare mental versus integrated models explanations of syllogistic reasoning, we administered a multiple-choice questionnaire containing 19 pairs of syllogistic premises with valid conclusions (given in a C-A order) to 72 psychology undergraduates. Association between our integrated models classification and the empirical difficulty of items was strong.

Información y comunicación durante los primeros meses de Covid-19. Cronología, infodemia y desinformación, noticias falsas, investigaciones en curso …

2020

The Covid-19 pandemic has introduced challenges throughout the world and is endangering people’s prosperity. To these health, economic, political, and social challenges have been added those related to the management and dissemination of information, mainly concerning its exponential growth, veracity, and dissemination. Providing objective evidence-based information contributes to meeting these challenges. Social media and social networks are playing a key role in informing society about the evolution of the pandemic and progress towards its eradication. However, social networks are also a vehicle for the transmission of biased or false news that can endanger people’s health. Information pr…

Engineering approaches in siRNA delivery.

2017

siRNAs are very potent drug molecules, able to silence genes involved in pathologies development. siRNAs have virtually an unlimited therapeutic potential, particularly for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. However, their use in clinical practice is limited because of their unfavorable properties to interact and not to degrade in physiological environments. In particular they are large macromolecules, negatively charged, which undergo rapid degradation by plasmatic enzymes, are subject to fast renal clearance/hepatic sequestration, and can hardly cross cellular membranes. These aspects seriously impair siRNAs as therapeutics. As in all the other fields of science, siRNAs management ca…

Assessment of tumor-infiltrating TCRV γ 9V δ 2 γδ lymphocyte abundance by deconvolution of human cancers microarrays

2017

Most human blood γδ cells are cytolytic TCRVγ9Vδ2+lymphocytes with antitumor activity. They are currently investigated in several clinical trials of cancer immunotherapy but so far, their tumor infiltration has not been systematically explored across human cancers. Novel algorithms allowing the deconvolution of bulk tumor transcriptomes to find the relative proportions of infiltrating leucocytes, such as CIBERSORT, should be appropriate for this aim but in practice they fail to accurately recognize γδ T lymphocytes. Here, by implementing machine learning from microarray data, we first improved the computational identification of blood-derived TCRVγ9Vδ2+γδ lymphocytes and then appl…

Human ectonucleotidase-expressing CD25 high Th17 cells accumulate in breast cancer tumors and exert immunosuppressive functions

2015

IF 7.644; International audience; Th17 cells contribute to the development of some autoimmune and allergic diseases by driving tissue inflammation. However, the function of Th17 cells during cancer progression remains controversial. Here, we show that human memory CD25(high) Th17 cells suppress T cell immunity in breast cancer. Ectonucleotidase-expressing Th17 cells accumulated in breast cancer tumors and suppressed CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cell activation. These cells expressed both Ror gamma t and Foxp3 genes and secreted Th17 related cytokines. We further found that CD39 ectonucleotisase expression on tumor-infiltrating Th17 cells was driven by TGF-beta and IL-6. Finally, immunohistochemical …

CCR7 on CD4+ T Cells Plays a Crucial Role in the Induction of Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis

2018

Abstract Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease of the CNS. Myelin-specific CD4+ Th lymphocytes are known to play a major role in both MS and its animal model experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). CCR7 is a critical element for immune cell trafficking and recirculation, that is, lymph node homing, under homeostatic conditions; blocking CCR7+ central memory cells from egress of lymph nodes is a therapeutic approach in MS. To define the effect of CD4+ T cell–specific constitutive deletion of CCR7 in the priming and effector phase in EAE, we used an active EAE approach in T cell reconstituted Rag1−/− mice, as well as adoptive transfer E…
