Personality of Fragility Fractures of the Pelvis

The personality of pelvic fractures in the elderly differs in many ways from pelvic ring lesions in adults. Only high-energy trauma leads to pelvic ring disruptions. Concomitant lesions of the soft tissues occur frequently. In the elderly, low-energy falls are the rule. The most important symptom is pain, which restricts mobility. Hemodynamic instability in fragility fractures of the pelvis is rare. Emergency stabilization with pelvic binders or sheets, C-clamping or emergency external fixation are not needed. Sacral bladder denervation for treatment of detrusor hyperreflexia and autonomic dysreflexia

Objectives. Detrusor hyperreflexia after spinal cord injury may cause urinary incontinence and chronic renal failure. In patients refractory to conservative treatment and not eligible for ventral sacral root stimulation for electrically induced micturition, we investigated the therapeutic value of sacral bladder denervation as a stand-alone procedure. Methods. Nine patients (8 men and 1 woman) between 21 and 58 years old (mean 30.2) with traumatic suprasacral spinal cord lesions underwent sacral bladder denervation for treatment of detrusor hyperreflexia and/or autonomic dysreflexia. Chronic sacral neuromodulation for treatment of neurogenic bladder dysfunction: long-term results with unilateral implants

Abstract Objectives. To investigate the therapeutic value of sacral neuromodulation in patients with neurogenic disorders in whom conservative treatment options were unsuccessful. Neurogenic disorders may result in various forms of lower urinary tract dysfunction. Methods. Twenty-seven patients (19 women, 8 men) aged 18 to 63 years (mean 44.9 years) were subjected to percutaneous test stimulation of the sacral spinal nerves. Rare sacral space-occupying lesions, their surgical management and reconstructive measures involved

Nine cases of space-occupying lesions of the sacral bone are presented. The problems of the clinical diagnosis, which in many cases comes too late, are discussed together with the indications for surgical treatment in this special group of tumours. The main clues are provided by the changes in the X-rays as well as the more modern imaging techniques (CT and MRI). The surgical technique aims at a most radical tumour removal with preservation of the sacral nerve roots, after which stabilisation of the sometimes weakened pelvic girdle may be necessary. Sacral spina bifida occulta rare occurrence in Byzantine Belentepe population in Muğla, Turkey: A possible case for adequate folic acid intake.

Spina bifida may occur during the first weeks after conception; folic acid deficiency is strongly related to this anomaly. We argue that the low prevalence rate of spina bifida may indicate a relatively good nutrition state of a population, given that folic acid is found in many food products commonly eaten. Radiological analysis, operative management and functional outcome of open book pelvic lesions: a 13-year cohort study.

Abstract We present the clinical and radiological outcome of a 13-year cohort study of 38 open book pelvic lesions. All patients were treated in one Level I Trauma centre. In the posterior pelvis, sacro-iliac diastasis was seen in 31 patients, sacral fracture in 7. In all patients with sacro-iliac diastasis, the pubic bone was inferiorly displaced on the primary ap pelvic overview on the side of injury. All but one patient was treated with open reduction and internal fixation of the symphysis pubis. This study aimed at providing a fundamental mathematical model for describing the motion of participants during an agility drill and to determine whether skill level constrained model components. Laparoscopic endopelvic sacral implantation of a Brindley controller for recovery of bladder function in a paralyzed patient

A new giant ground bird from the Upper Cretaceous of southern France

New discoveries afford a much better knowledge of the large birds previously reported from the Upper Cretaceous of southern France on the basis of a single synsacrum fragment. An incomplete pelvis consisting of the synsacrum with part of the ilia is used to define a new taxon of bird, Gargantuavis philoinos , to which a femur is also referred. This bird is characterized by its very large size (comparable to that of an ostrich), a broad pelvis with an anteriorly placed acetabulum, and a short robust femur.
