Ustica (from the latin ustum= burned, volcanic wreckage) is a small island in the Mediterranean Sea. It has an area of about 87 hectares and a perimeter of about 12 km. It has volcanic origins and represents only a small part of a complex volcanic apparatus involving also the underwater mountain “Anchise”. La consolidata separazione tra Urbanistica e Paesaggio poggia le sue fondamenta su una precisa visione del paesaggio in termini prettamente estetici e culturali. La Vas, un nuovo strumento individuato dalla Comunità Europea per integrare considerazioni di natura ambientale nei piani e nei programmi e migliorarne la qualità decisionale complessiva, riconduce l’attenzione dei diversi operatori alle componenti strutturali del paesaggio. Per questa ragione, la Vas, se ben costruita, può dispiegare appieno le sue reali potenzialità, anche nel nostro Paese, ed essere considerata la “cerniera” trasversale che consenta l’integrazione, nel piano, della sostenibilità ambientale, economica e sociale.

The paper aims to provide a report of the investigation and design activities which were carried out in the Apennine ridge of Umbria in collaboration with the Landscape Design department of the Vienna Polytechnic. The research found concrete realization in some landscape interventions and aspired to indicate different perspectives on landscape exploration practices in marginal and peripheral contexts. In the past the airports often arose outside the town centre as part of a constellation in the agricultural field. The original systems changed with time: the airport has been adapted to the new requirements and the fields have turned into urban landscapes. The proximity of the town and the airport fence is a constant detectable in cases that are very different from each other as Berlin, Denver or Palermo.
