In the middle ages, particularly between the 10th – 14th centuries, the Diocese of Salerno was among the most important ones in southern Italy. Its earliest records date back to the late 5th century and during the 10th it was elevated to archdiocese; so the city of Salerno became the center of a large diocese, among the largest of Southern Italy. This essay reconstructs the history of diocese and its public symbols (like the cathedral), demonstrating consistency with that of other Italian dioceses but, at the same time, also highlighting some specifi city resulting from more general historical dynamics of Salerno and the role it played in the southern part of Italy.

The city of Salerno and the expansion that underwent in the 1920s in order to respond to the urban expansion following the demographic increase that occurred at the beginning of the century will be the topics discussed in this paper. Transformations that created a face to the city that, in its forms, although not linked to the most advanced avant-garde, represent a testimony of the new characteristics of the “modern” city. Within this evolutionary process of the province of Salerno there is the 1928 project of two engineers, Michele and his son Luigi De Angelis for the construction of the “Regio” School. Lo studio rende nota, grazie ad inedita ricevuta di pagamento autografa del pittore, Vincenzo Maria Salerno, finora sconosciuto agli studi, la paternità e la data di esecuzione (1731) degli affreschi, recentemente ritrovati, all'interno della cappella di San Giovanni Nepomuceno, nonché dati sul committente, il sacerdote Vincenzo Pecorella. The study makes known, thanks to unpublished autograph payment receipt of the painter, Vincenzo Maria Salerno, hitherto unknown to studies, the authorship and date of execution (1731) of the recently found frescoes inside the chapel of St. John of Nepomuk, as well as data on the client, priest Vincenzo Pecorella.
