Different La/SS-B mRNA isoforms are expressed in salivary gland tissue of patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome

1996

Recently we isolated a La/SS-B mRNA isoform from a cDNA library made from peripheral blood lymphocytes of a patient with primary Sjögren's Syndrome. In the La/SS-B mRNA isoform the exon 1 was replaced. The alternative exon was termed exon 1'. Genomic analysis showed that the exon 1' La mRNA was the result of a promoter-switch in combination with alternative splicing. Due to the unusual structure of the exon 1' La/SS-B mRNA, the function and the behaviour under physiological and pathophysiological conditions in tissue of patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome or Systemic Lupus Erythematosus remained obscure. Therefore assays were established allowing a qualitative and quantitative estimati…

Gene activity of polytene chromosomes in Drosophila species of the obscura group.

1988

The polytene chromosome puffing patterns of Drosophila guanche were established and compared with those of Drosophila subobscura. A total of 150 loci, active in some of the 17 developmental stages studied, were described and 23 of them were found to form the characteristic puffing pattern of D. guanche. Taking into account the number of puffs as well as the gene activity of each chromosome and the total gene activity, D. guanche seems to be less active than D. subobscura. Although both species show a degree of homology in their puffing patterns lower than that found for sibling species, the degree of homology is stronger than that between species belonging to the same group but to different…

A Cell-specific Glycosylated Silk Protein from Chironomus thummi Salivary Glands

1996

Chironomid salivary glands contain 40 cells dedicated to the synthesis of a relatively small ensemble of silk proteins. Glands in some species contain a special lobe composed of 4 cells distinguishable from the others. We have cloned a special lobe-specific cDNA from Chironomus thummi salivary glands. Northern blots of salivary gland RNA demonstrated that the cDNA hybridizes to a 2.5-kilobase transcript present only in the special lobe. In situ hybridization mapped the gene encoding this cDNA to region A2b on polytene chromosome IV, the locus of the special lobe-specific Balbiani ring a. The deduced amino acid sequence encodes a protein with a calculated molecular mass of 77 kDa and numerou…

Marsupialización modificada de ránula gigante intraoral: reporte de caso

2016

Lymphoid lesions of salivary glands : malignant and Benign

2007

Lesions of salivary glands with a prominent lymphoid component are a heterogeneous group of diseases that include benign reactive lesions and malignant neoplasms. Occasionally, these pathologic entities present difficulties in the clinical and pathological diagnosis and prognosis. Lymphoepithelial sialadenitis, HIV-associated salivary gland disease, chronic sclerosing sialadenitis, Warthin tumor, and extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma are examples of this pathology that are sometimes problematic to differentiate from one another. In this paper the author reviewed the main clinical, pathological and prognostic features of these lesions.

Diagnostic evaluation of serial sections of labial salivary gland biopsies in Sjögren's syndrome.

2007

OBJECTIVES: Sjögren's syndrome is a chronic inflammatory disease. The detection of chronic inflammatory infiltrates containing >50 lymphocytes (lymphocytic focus) per 4 mm2 tissue in minor salivary gland biopsies is a diagnostic parameter of the disease. The aim of the study was to examine if an increase in the tissue area of a single minor labial salivary gland biopsy through serial histological sections in patients affected by primary Sjögren's syndrome could facilitate the detection of the diagnostic focus score (grades >1 or >2). METHODS: We observed 24 labial salivary gland biopsies from patients affected by primary Sjögren's syndrome, diagnosed according to the clinical-laboratory cri…

Soft palate preservation after tumor resection with transoral laser microsurgery

2012

Background: Management and preservation of the soft palate is dependent on clinical stage and tumor histology. However, available literature is scarce regarding the palate preservation with the use of laser CO 2 . Objectives : We report the results obtained after management with laser surgery and soft palate preservation in three patients with salivary gland neoplasms. Method: Three patients with minor salivary gland tumors were treated by means of transoral laser microsurgery. All tumors were assessed using magnetic resonance imaging. All tumors were >3 cm. Soft palate function was preserved and reconstruction was performed with primary closure. Patients began oral feeding the same day and…

Large-sized pleomorphic adenoma of the cheek treated with Nd:Yag laser: Report of a case and review of the literature

2020

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) mostly involves parotid glands, while extra-parotid localizations are relatively uncommon. Particularly, PAs of the cheek minor salivary glands with a size larger than 4 cm are exceedingly rare, with only few cases reported. Surgical treatment of PA usually consists in radical excision. However, despite a presumptive radicality, recurrences, sometimes followed by malignant transformation, may occur. Here we report a case of a large-sized (6 cm) PA of the cheek minor salivary glands in a 70 year-old female patient, successfully treated through a conservative approach, based on the use of Nd:YAG Laser (λ=1064 nm). No recurrences were observed after a 2-year follow-up.…
