Salt partitioning in ionized, thermo-responsive hydrogels: perspective to water desalination

Charged hydrogels are capable of swelling in aqueous salt solutions, whereby part of the salt ions is repelled due to the presence of fixed charged groups inside the hydrogel. This effect creates a concentration gradient between the absorbed solution and the surrounding fluid known as salt partitioning, offering a potential for these materials to be employed to desalinate saltwater. If the charged hydrogels are thermo-sensitive as well, then the purer, absorbed solution can be recovered by shrinking the hydrogels upon temperature change. A new and simple method to prepare solid nanoparticles of water-soluble salts using water-in-oil microemulsions is described. In particular, starting from water/sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate/n-heptane microemulsions carrying inside the aqueous core of the reversed micelles some water-soluble salts [CaCl2, Na2HPO4, Cu(NO3)2], after evaporation of the volatile components (water and apolar organic solvent), the resulting inorganic salt/surfactant composites were found to be totally dispersible in pure n-heptane. Abstract The interaction of oxydiacetate and citrate with the major components of seawater has been studied potentiometrically, at 25°C, in an artificial seawater (containing Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl− and SO42−) at different salinities (5–45‰). Apparent protonation constants were calculated, from potentiometric data, and estimated, using an appropriate complex formation model. Complex formation by (CH3)2Sn 2+ with acetate (ac), malonate (mal), 1,2,3-propanetricarboxylate (tricarballylate, tca) and 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylate (btc) ligands in aqueous solution is reported. Four new diorganotin(IV), (R = Me, Bu), and triorganotin(IV), (R = Me, Ph), derivatives of the phosphomycin disodium salt antibiotic[(1R,2S)-1,2-epoxypropylphosphonate]Na2 have been synthesized and their solid state configuration studied by X-ray crystallography, FT-IR, Mossbauer, UV–Vis spectroscopies. The X-ray diffraction investigation, performed on the bis[trimethyltin(IV)]- phosphomycin, showed that the coordination geometry at all the Sn atoms is trigonal bipyramidal. The structure of the complex forms an unusual polymeric zig-zag planar network. The ability of several anionic compounds, including carboxylic and dicarboxylic acids, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and sodium deoxycholate (SDC) and other bile salts, to separate the C(10)-C(13) homologues and the corresponding 20 positional isomers of linear alkylbenzenesulfonates (LAS) by capillary electrophoresis was studied. Up to 19 peaks and a shoulder were observed with a background electrolyte (BGE) containing 10 mM phosphate (pH 6.8), 30% acetonitrile and 40 mM SDS, and 18 peaks were obtained with a BGE containing 10 mM borate (pH 9), 40% ethanol and 40 mM palmitic acid (PA). Abstract The synthesis, structure and physical characterization of three new radical salts formed by the organic donor bis(ethylenediseleno)tetrathiafulvalene (BEDS-TTF or BEST) and the paramagnetic hexacyanoferrate(III) anion [Fe(CN)6]3− or the photochromic nitroprusside anion [Fe(CN)5NO]2− are reported: (BEST)4[Fe(CN)6] (1), (BEST)3[Fe(CN)6]2·H2O (2) and (BEST)2[Fe(CN)5NO] (3). Salts 1 and 3 show a layered structure with alternating organic (β–type packing) and inorganic slabs. Salt 2 shows an original interpenetrated structure probably due to the unprecedented presence of (BEST)2+ dications. The electrochemical synthesis of cyanoacetic acid was performed by cathodic reduction of tetraalkylammonium salts (R4NX) in acetonitrile in undivided cells equipped with sacrificial anodes with concomitant or subsequent addition of carbon dioxide. These syntheses avoid the use of dangerous reagents, yield cyanoacetic acid in moderate faradic yields and confirm that the cathodic reduction of tetraalkylammonium salts in the presence of acetonitrile leads to the formation of the anion CNCH2-.
