Rehabilitation with implant-supported overdentures in total edentulous patients: a review

2013

Objectives: The main aim of this review article is to discuss implant-supported overdentures (ISOs) as treatment in edentulous patients. Besides, we will try to discuss among the different treatment options in such patients and to analyze their validity when ISOs are compared with other clinical modalities. At the same time, we will try to suggest clinical guidelines supported by current clinical studies. Material and methods: We performed a Medline search and review of pertinent articles on the mentioned subject from 1986 to 2011. As a searching strategy, we used the following words: implant-supported overdentures, attachment systems, Locator attachment, cantilever, fixed prosthesis. Resul…

Restore the natural: a review and case series report on reattachment

2014

Reattachment of the original tooth fragment to the fractured tooth helps in maintaining the tooth’s color, wear resistance, morphology and translucency in the restoration. This article describes the reattachment of fractured fragment using a fiber post and dual cure resin cement with a self-etching adhesive. Two young male patients reported with a complicated crown fracture of the right maxillary central incisor due a road traffic accident. The fractured fragments were loosely attached to the palatal gingival tissue, which was then surgically removed and preserved for the reattachment procedure. The fractured tooth segments were successfully reattached following fiber post cementation. Toot…

The craniofacial necrotizing fasciitis after a minor trauma in an elderly white woman

2014

The term necrotizing fasciitis /NF/ was probably first described by Jones in 1871 as “hospital gangrene”. NF, with its fast spreading from the local infection to massive necrosis of the underlying tissues, ie. superficial fascia and subcutaneous layers, is a potentially fatal disease, unless diagnosed early and properly treated. NF is more frequent in frail patients with chronic debilitating illnesses, immune deficiencies or from a poor social background. Sixty percent of NF cases occur in females. Here we present a case of necrotizing fasciitis of the head and neck region after a minor trauma (phenol blocks due to severe neuropathic pain) in an 82-year-old female with the history of trigem…

Significant association of MTHFD1 1958GA single nucleotide polymorphism with nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate in Indian population.

2014

Objectives: Nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate (NSCLP) is genetically distinct from those with syndromic clefts, and accounts for ~70% of cases with Oral clefts. Folate, or vitamin B9, is an essential nutrient in our diet. Allelic variants in genes involved in the folate pathway might be expected to have an impact on risk of oral clefts. Given the key role of methylenetetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase 1 (MTHFD1) in folate metabolism, it would be of significant interest to assess its role in NSCLP etiology. Study Design: The present study aims at examining the association between MTHFD1 1958G>A polymorphism and NSCLP risk by conducting a case-control study in south Indian population. Our sample …

Beneficios y barreras identificadas por las presas que practican actividad física: Una revisión cualitativa de la literatura (Benefits and barriers i…

2017

Invisible work, unseen hazards: the health of women immigrant household service workers in Spain

2009

BACKGROUND: Household service work has been largely absent from occupational health studies. We examine the occupational hazards and health effects identified by immigrant women household service workers. METHODS: Exploratory, descriptive study of 46 documented and undocumented immigrant women in household services in Spain, using a phenomenological approach. Data were collected between September 2006 and May 2007 through focus groups and semi-structured individual interviews. Data were separated for analysis by documentation status and sorted using a mixed-generation process. In a second phase of analysis, data on psychosocial hazards were organized using the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questi…

La transversalidad y la escuela promotora de salud

2001

The following article shows the evolution of the schools contribution to the Health Education of children and young people. Moving on from the traditional concept of health, today, Health Education has a general and global meaning, wich encompasses all of the physical, psicological and social aspects of health. These aspects define the characteristics of the «Healthy School». The need to broach the «transversal subject» offers schools the possibility of developing «transversality» in the Health Education. Finally, the concept of promoting health defines, together with the other subjects, that which we understand by «the heath promotion schools», which attempts to progress the full integrati…
