Rights of Young People and the European Social Charter
2021
The European Social Charter (alongside the case-law of the European Committee of Social Rights) forms the most striking binding legal source for young people’s social rights, providing a framework for synergies with both the European Union and the Council of Europe’s other instruments and mechanisms in this area. In the current times of pandemic, the most important thing is preventing the COVID-19 crisis (which has economic, political and social dimensions) from becoming a crisis of values among young people. From this perspective, on the one hand, the paper focuses on access of young people to education, labour market and housing. On the other hand, it proposes measures aimed at raising aw…
Review of the quality of youTube videos recommending exercises for the COVID-19 Lockdown
2022
Background: The world is experiencing a pandemic caused by COVID-19. Insufficient physical activity can increase the risk of illness. Trying to replicate a normal search that any user/patient could do in YouTube, the objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of YouTube videos related to home exercises during lockdown and their adherence to World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations. Methods: A simple search was carried out on YouTube. The first 150 videos were selected. After applying exclusion criteria, 68 videos were analyzed and evaluated. Two statistical analyses based on machine learning techniques were carried out. Videos were classified according to principal component…
The physical activity of Spanish speleologists: accomplishment of recommendations and differences by sociodemographic variables
2023
Outdoor adventure activities are becoming more popular due to their potential health benefits, although there is little scientific information on speleology as a physical activity (PA). The purpose of this study is to expand the scientific evidence in this field in two ways: (a) describe the PA performed by speleologists, taking into account the variables of interest such as gender, age, education, speleological level, participation in 'Alpine' explorations and body mass index (BMI) and (b) identify how far the World Health Organization's (WHO) PA recommendations were accomplished (i.e.,150 min of moderate-intensity aerobic PA or 75 min of vigorous-intensity aerobic). A cross-sectional stud…
Applying Benford’s Law to Monitor Death Registration Data: A Management Tool for the COVID-19 Pandemic
2021
In Spain, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the various regions of the country differ7 ently. The availability of reliable and up-to-date information has proved to be fundamental for the 8 management of this health crisis. However, especially during the first wave of the pandemic (Feb9 ruary-August 2020), the disparity in the recording criteria and in the timing of providing these fig10 ures to the central government created controversy and confusion regarding the real dimension of 11 the pandemic. It is therefore necessary to have objective and homogeneous criteria at the national 12 level to guide health managers in the correct recording and evaluation of the magnitude of the pan13 demic…

Suspected-screening assessment of the occurrence of organic compounds in sewage sludge
2021
The profiling of emerging organic pollutants present in sludge and generated during wastewater treatment is much more limited than in water. This is mainly due to the difficulty of sludge analysis because of its high content of organic matter and interfering compounds. In this study, a generic extraction method using a mixture of buffered water (pH 4.1) and solid phase extraction (SPE) clean-up was applied to samples of sludge obtained in different treatment plants. This extraction was followed by determination of the contaminants by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS), using suspected screening to detect the most relevant o…
Extracellular vesicles in parasitic diseases
2014
Parasitic diseases affect billions of people and are considered a major public health issue. Close to 400 species are estimated to parasitize humans, of which around 90 are responsible for great clinical burden and mortality rates. Unfortunately, they are largely neglected as they are mainly endemic to poor regions. Of relevance to this review, there is accumulating evidence of the release of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in parasitic diseases, acting both in parasite parasite inter-communication as well as in parasite host interactions. EVs participate in the dissemination of the pathogen and play a role in the regulation of the host immune systems. Production of EVs from parasites or paras…
The outbreak/pandemic investigation approach is a chall…
