Social and economic consequences of natural hazards : The case of the Lapindo Mudflow in Indonesia

The consist of hot mud, gases and water at about 100 degrees Celsius. In 2008, the mudflow covered 816 hectares of land, covering both villages and agriculture. Experts are still discussing if the eruption was caused by an earthquake that had its epicentre 200 km west from where the eruption took place, or if it was caused by the drilling that Lapindo Brantas was doing in the area. This thesis explores the causes and the effects of farmer-Fulani herdsmen conflict, and the mitigation responses towards the conflict.
