Computational Models That Matter During a Global Pandemic Outbreak
2020
The COVID-19 pandemic is causing a dramatic loss of lives worldwide, challenging the sustainability of our health care systems, threatening economic meltdown, and putting pressure on the mental health of individuals (due to social distancing and lock-down measures). The pandemic is also posing severe challenges to the scientific community, with scholars under pressure to respond to policymakers’ demands for advice despite the absence of adequate, trusted data. Understanding the pandemic requires fine-grained data representing specific local conditions and the social reactions of individuals. While experts have built simulation models to estimate disease trajectories that may be enough to gu…
Disaster vulnerability by demographics?
2020
This article provides a brief overview of the relationship between disaster vulnerability and demographic variables. Population numbers and densities are examined along with using a gender focus as illustrative of individual characteristics. For the most part, people’s and society’s choices create vulnerabilities based on demographics rather than specific demographic characteristics inevitably conferring vulnerability.
Marketing Sri Lanka as an International Tourist Destination
2007
Masteroppgave i økonomi og administrasjon 2007 - Høgskolen i Agder, Kristiansand Within the last two decades Sri Lanka’s tourism industry has grown dramatically as one of the main foreign exchange earners and employment provider. «Formalistic obscurantism»? An attempt to decipher the curriculum in social studies
2021
Understanding disruptive situations in physical education : Teaching style and didactic implications
2020
Several studies have emphasized the importance of handling disruptive situations in the physical education (PE) learning environment; however, few have investigated complex disruptive situations in PE and included both teacher and student perspectives. The aims of this study, which discusses an alternative teaching style for reducing disruptive situations, were to gain a better understanding of student and teacher experiences of complex disruptive situations in PE, and to explore how the teacher handled these situations. The philosophical perspective used in this study was Rorty’s philosophical pragmatism. Methods included written narratives, interviews, observation, and video recordings o…

Investigating the Teaching and Learning of British and American Culture in Norwegian Upper Secondary School
2021
Master´s thesis in English (EN501) This thesis is an investigation of teachers’ influence on pupils related to cultural knowledge in upper secondary. A semi-structured interview with three teachers provide data that is compared with a survey questionnaire among their pupils. The main emphasis has been on British and American culture because of the standing in Norway. An essential factor is that the Norwegian curriculum is in the process of implementation. This fact created a need to consider changes to the curriculum because these changes may influence teaching and findings. Therefore the cultural theme’s position in the curriculum is presented with some historical developments. The researc…
