To be or not to be: Collaborative Governance and The Case of Continuous Master Planning in Lahti

2020

The benefits of collaborative actions between different stakeholders has been recognized broadly and has been admitted as one of the key factors in regional development. However, the research has so far focused on examining cases retrospectively, leaving a gap in looking into something on-going and uncertain, as well as it has been common to consider regional development through abstracts concepts. Therefore, there exists less information on the practical implementation of the theories and policies within regions. Additionally, it is important to take into consideration the ever-growing trend of cross-sectoral collaboration - however not only in public-private interface, but also involving …

Frames of digital divide in digitalization policies in Finland, Denmark and Sweden and the legitimacy of the implementing agency

2020

The process whereby digital technologies are integrated to everyday functions of the lives of citizens is commonly referred to as digitalization. While the benefits of utilization of technology are undeniable and manifold, digitalization also causes inequality in society. Digital divide is the academic concept that originally referred to the gap between those who have access to technology and those who do not, but nowadays it is understood as a wider phenomenon that encompasses various inequalities brought about by digitalization. Nordic countries are at the forefront in taking advantage of new technological opportunities, but also for these welfare states digital divide is a concern and go…

Between institutions and agency : How tensions shape the trajectory of governance

2020

The Europe 2020 strategy promoted the concept of smart specialization as the future for regional development strategies in Europe. The aim was to improve governance practices within European countries on sub-national levels. Nevertheless, not all regions in the European Union produced smart-specialization strategies within the year 2020. The failure to produce a strategy does not mean that actions were not taken. It is instead that actions were taken within different contexts that greatly affected how the implementation process played out. As such, smart specialization has presented opportunities to study the meaning of place. How the policy concept has been translated into action through e…

Organisational responses to regulatory pressure: A case study of a Norwegian Research University’s strategic compliance to GDPR

2020

Master's thesis in Innovative governance and public management (ME523) This thesis study seeks to test Oliver’s (1991) theory for prediction of Strategic Responses to Institutional Processes, against the case of initial responses taken by a Norwegian research university when faced with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of European Union (EU).This thesis explores how different parts of the same organisation respond to and manage institutional pressure. It uses a case study of a Norwegian research university’s response to the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). An exploratory case study design frame was used to address the research question, and qualitative dat…

The formal organization structure of research innovation centers: a case-study in search of characteristics and an explanation

2020

Master's thesis in Innovative governance and public management (ME523) This study sheds light on research innovation centers in a Norwegian setting. Research innovation centers are a hybrid of research groups and innovation centers and belong to the higher education (HE) sector. The aim of this study is to identify the formal organization structure oftwo cases of research innovation centers and to find a suitable explanation through the analysis of its institutional pillars, according to W. R. Scott (2014). In a qualitative case-analysis it was found that the two cases share most of their characteristics in the formal organization structure. The main findings in both cases are a) a low leve…

Dealing with rural-urban economic welfare challenges in the Nordic countries – a theory-based overview

2020

Abstract Geography has played an important part in creating the Nordic welfare states. This article discusses how the urban-rural dimension has been dealt with in the context of developing economic welfare. Four different policy interventions are presented: exogeneous shocks, buy out, palliative treatment and endogenous growth through innovation. Of these, the latter prevails in contemporary policy discussions. The application of policy measures varies substantially between the Nordic countries. We have different Nordic models rather than a single model. While in the aftermath of World War II economic development and welfare arguments combined to justify geographical centralisation, the pre…

Navigating the care between two distinct cultures: a qualitative study of the experiences of Arabic-speaking immigrants in Norwegian hospitals

2021

Abstract Background During the past decades, there has been an increase in the number of immigrants to European and Scandinavian countries. This has challenged the health-care systems, which cater to the needs of patients despite their cultural and linguistic barriers, in these countries. Most studies on this topic have focused on the perspectives of health-care providers in delivering their service. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how hospitalized Arabic-speaking patients experienced their interaction with the Norwegian health-care system. Methods In-depth interviews with 20 participants and researcher’s participant observation were conducted to explore the idiosyncrat…

Touch, threats, and transactions: Pandemic influences on consumer responses and the mediating role of touch likelihood when shopping for fruits and v…

2022

The COVID-19 pandemic has influenced consumer behavior in numerous ways. Most of the public health measures have centered around minimizing social contact and physical touch. In the present study, we investigate the impact of such touch restrictions, introduced during the pandemic, on consumers’ shopping responses and payment preferences in the context of a perishable food category amenable to tactile evaluation (fresh fruits and vegetables). The study used a single-factor between-subjects design (during vs. before the COVID-19 pandemic), with the data collected in a scenario-based online experiment from a sample of 729 participants. The results revealed significantly less favorable shoppin…
