Jerarquización y preferencia de valores en los estudiantes de secundaria = Hierarchial structuring and preference of values in the students of second…

2014

This article describes a study of the values and variables that influence hierarchical structuring in secondary school students. The main objectives are to determine which are the preferred values and to compare in what manner gender and age are related to the values of adolescents. The study is conducted with a sample (n=114) of male and female secondary school students, between 14 and 18 years old. The results show that the two variables (gender and age) are related to the subject’s values. Girls prefer final values, more abstract and internalized values; opposite to the instrumental, more egocentric and material values, preferred by boys. Regarding age influence, as they grow older, adol…

Subjective well-being key elements of Successful Aging: A study with Lifelong Learners older adults from Costa Rica and Spain.

2019

Abstract Subjective well-being is a major psychological construct in the research tradition. Along with literature, authors have distinguished between hedonic and eudaimonic well-being. The aim of this study is to determine the role of some psychosocial variables plays in the perceived well-being is conceived from a hedonic or a eudaimonic perspective. The sample consisted of 1016 people of 55 years and older in a Spanish sample and 277 people of 55 years old or older from a Costa Rican sample. Both samples were part of the Longitudinal Older Learners (LOL) study. A structural model with latent variables was estimated with Mplus. The results point out that, the traditional variables include…

Testing psychological (GAM) model of aggression on the men’s sample

2021

The study was carried out to verify how psychological models are able to explain the phenomenon of aggression among men. There is a lack of research that try to test in holistic way many factors of aggression. We try to enrich the results of research on male aggression by recognizing to what extent factors that have not been studied so far, such as willpower, temporal orientation, or the use of drugs or steroids, explain aggression in the group of men. The sample of men (N = 131) was selected deliberately in terms of substance dependence, steroid use and a free substance-free howl. Ten Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) was used to measure five personality factors. The Zimbardo Time Percepti…

Associations between personality, sports participation and athletic success. A comparison of Big Five in sporting and non-sporting adults

2018

Abstract The present study investigates whether the Big Five personality traits are different among diverse sports populations. A sample of 881 male athletes and non-athletes completed a self-report questionnaire measuring their personality traits. The Exploratory Structure Equation Modeling (ESEM) approach is adopted to test measurement invariance and mean differences among groups. The results indicate that athletes who had experienced the most success in their sport scored higher than non-athletes in each personality dimension of the Big Five, with the exception of openness, while less successful athletes scored higher than non-athletes only in extraversion and agreeableness. The more suc…

Methods matter: Testing competing models for designing short-scale Big-Five assessments

2015

Abstract Many psychological instruments are psychometrically inadequate because derived person-parameters are unfounded and models will be rejected using established psychometric criteria. One strategy towards improving the psychometric properties is to shorten instruments. We present and compare the following procedures for the abbreviation of self-report assessments on the Trait Self-Description Inventory in a sample of 14,347 participants: (a) Maximizing reliability/main loadings, (b) Minimizing modification indices/cross loadings, (c) the PURIFY Algorithm in Tetrad, (d) Ant Colony Optimization, and (e) a genetic algorithm. Ant Colony Optimization was superior to all other methods in imp…

Current air quality analytics and monitoring: a review.

2014

This review summarizes the different tools and concepts that are commonly applied in air quality monitoring. The monitoring of atmosphere is extremely important as the air quality is an important problem for large communities. Main requirements for analytical devices used for monitoring include a long period of autonomic operation and portability. These instruments, however, are often characterized by poor analytical performance. Monitoring networks are the most common tools used for monitoring, so large-scale monitoring programmes are summarized here. Biomonitoring, as a cheap and convenient alternative to traditional sample collection, is becoming more and more popular, although its main …

Pitfalls to be considered on the metabolomic analysis of biological samples by HR-MAS

2014

HR-MAS (High-Resolution Magic AngleSpinning) is considered a powerfultechnique for metabolomic studies ofbiological samples that provides “intact”tissue spectra (Cheng et al., 1998; Waterset al., 2000; Sitter et al., 2002; Martinez-Bisbal et al., 2004; Payne et al., 2006;Coen et al., 2007; Bathen et al., 2010).The performance of HR-MAS, fol-lowed by quantitative histopathology hasdemonstrated that, despite some changes,HR-MAS can preserve approximately thetissue histopathologic features producingwell-resolved spectra of cellular metabo-lites (Cheng et al., 2000). Nevertheless,therearesomeaspectsarousedintheliter-ature about the possible biochemical andstructural changes that can occur durin…

Occurrence and risk assessment of mycotoxins, acrylamide, and furan in Latvian beer.

2018

This work reports data on the occurrence of nine mycotoxins and two food processing contaminants - acrylamide and furan - in a total of 100 beers produced in Latvia. Mycotoxins were detected by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry, acrylamide by HPLC coupled with quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometry, and furan by headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The most frequently occurring mycotoxins were HT-2 and deoxynivalenol (DON), which were detected in 52% and 51% of the analysed samples. The highest content was observed for DON, reaching the maximum of 248 µg kg-1. Furan was ubiquitous, and 74% of the samples contained acrylamid…

Efficacy and safety of allergen immunotherapy in patients with allergy to molds: A systematic review

2018

BACKGROUND Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) with mould extracts has been performed for many years but the final demonstration of its clinical efficacy is still missing, due to the small number of studies and their inconsistent results. OBJECTIVE To systematically review efficacy and safety of AIT for the treatment of respiratory allergies to moulds. DESIGN The primary outcomes were safety and reduction of symptoms (Symptom Score, SS) and medication use (Medication Score, MS) in patients treated with AIT compared to controls. The strength of the evidence was graded based on the risk of bias, consistency and magnitude of effect, according to the GRADE Working Group's guide. DATA SOURCES Medline, …
