Aqueous enzymatic process assisted by microwave extraction of oil from yellow horn (Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge.) seed kernels and its quality evalu…

2013

Abstract In this study, aqueous enzymatic process (AEP) assisted by microwave extraction (ME) of oil from yellow horn ( Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge.) seed kernel was investigated. Central composite design (CCD) and response surface methodology (RSM) were used to optimise an enzyme cocktail (cellulase, hemicellulase, pectinase) for AEP. The main factors of ME were also studied. A maximal oil extraction yield of 55.8% was achieved under optimal conditions. Moreover, scanning electron microscope (SEM) was applied to characterise the extraction process. Analysing chemical composition of the extracted oil by GC–MS showed that the content of unsaturated fatty acids by this emerging method (91.18…

Antibacterial and Antifungal Activities of Acetonic Extract from Paullinia cupana Mart Seeds

2013

The antibacterial and antifungal activities of the acetone extract from Paullinia cupana var. sorbilis Mart. (Sapindaceae) seeds, commonly called guarana, were assessed against selected bacterial and fungal strains. We tested the extract against both standard American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) and clinically isolated (CI) bacterial strains and three fungal strains. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values for bacteria and MIC and minimum fungicidal concentration for fungi were determined. The extract showed an activity against the nine bacterial strains tested, both CI and ATCC strains (MIC comprised between 32 and 128 μm/mL and MBC bet…

Newest Strategies in the Search for Bioactive Saponins from the Tropical Plant Biodiversity.

2016

This review will focus on newest results leading to the discovery of new bioactive saponins by using a combination of successive advanced procedures in extraction, isolation, structure elucidation and bioassays. Microwave- and ultrasonic-assisted extractions, two recent advanced methods have been increasingly used in the last decade. Then, a multistep purification procedure was achieved by flash chromatography, vacuum liquid chromatography, low, medium- and high-pressure liquid chromatography on silica gel and reversed-phase silica gel RP-18 (VLC, LPLC, MPLC, HPLC). These successive chromatographic steps have been implemented in the author's laboratory in order to avoid the time-consuming t…

Anti-phytopathogen terpenoid glycosides from the root bark of Chytranthus macrobotrys and Radlkofera calodendron

2020

Abstract Chytranthus macrobotrys and Radlkofera calodendron are two Sapindaceae characterized by a lack of phytochemical data. Both root barks from the two Sapindaceae species were processed by ethanol extraction followed by the isolation of their primary constituents by liquid chromatography. This process yielded four previously undescribed terpenoid glycosides together with eight known analogues. Extracts and isolated compounds from C. macrobotrys and R. calodendron were then screened for antimicrobial activity against fifteen phytopathogens. The biological screening also involved extracts and pure compounds from Blighia unijugata and Blighia welwitschii, two Sapindaceae previously studie…

Supercritical carbon dioxide extraction of seed oil from yellow horn (Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge.) and its anti-oxidant activity

2010

Supercritical fluid carbon dioxide (SF-CO(2)) extraction (SFE) of seed oil from yellow horn and its anti-oxidant activity were investigated. The effects of CO(2) flow rate and particle size were firstly optimized, and a central composite design (CCD) combined with response surface methodology was used to study the effects of extraction pressure, temperature and time on the extraction yields. A maximal extraction yield of 61.28% was achieved under optimal conditions of extraction pressure 30 MPa at 45.68 degrees C, 2.08 h and CO(2) flow rate 12 kg/h with 0.5mm particle size. By analyzing the chemical composition of the seed oil, we found that the content of unsaturated fatty acids was approx…

Effects of the serjania erecta and zeyheria montana ethanol extracts in experimental pulpitis in rats: A histological study

2012

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate, by the semi-quantitative histological analysis, the anti-inflammatory activity of the ethanolic extracts of Serjania erecta e Zeyheria Montana, in experimental pulpits in rats. Study Design: In order to induce pulp inflammation, cavities were performed on the occlusal surface of the mandibular first molars of 45 male rats, without pulp exposure. The animals were distributed into 4 groups: GI, teeth without cavities; GII, single dose of saline solution via intraperitoneal (IP); GIII, single dose (IP) of 300mg/Kg of ethanolic extract of Zeyheria montana; GIV, single dose (IP) of 300mg/Kg of ethanolic extract of Serjania erecta. After 6, 12 an…
