The French theatre of the 20th century willingly treats and revisits ancient myths. Oedipus, Antigone, Electra, the Trojan War, Amphitryon appear in many writers’ works. The myth of Electra in Jean Giraudouxs version entitled Electra (1937), as well as Jean-Paul Sartres The Flies (1942) are interesting examples of metatexts. Face to the threat of war, Giraudoux, who was a diplomat and a Germanophile, focuses on the problem of power, responsibility, and justice, while Sartre exemplifies the existentialist philosophy and its main element: a man who is responsible for his actions and condemned to freedom. It is Sartre that is generally considered to be the spiritual guide of this duo and that is why his role should be approached with caution in order to show that Beauvoir was by no means an epigone of her master. Phenomenology and psychology are two fundamental disciplines of culture in the 20th century. The phenomenology of Husserl was assimilated by Sartre at the beginning of the century, until the publication of L’être et le néant (1943). In fact, studies of Sartre’s works demonstrate that his philosophy of existence is closely linked to transcendental phenomenology and psychology. Furthermore, the key words of “being” and “nothing” allow one to follow the evolution of Sartre’s thinking from the philosophy of existence to Marxism. Angst har vært et viktig tema i nyere filosofi. Etter en kort introduksjon til fenomenologisk metode, gis det i denne artikkelen en presentasjon av Søren Kierkegaards, Martin Heideggers og Jean-Paul Sartres bidrag til angstens filosofi. Her relateres angstfølelsen til erfaring av intethet og til den grunnleggende eksistensielle friheten. Med utgangspunkt i denne filosofiske teorien gis en drøfting av hvordan angsten kan oppfattes som et uttrykk for en indre spenning. Til slutt vises det hvordan den filosofiske angstteorien kan relateres til konkrete angstformer og angstlidelser.
