The Quest for Global Safety

2007

The authors present a systematic study on the factors that have influence on the establishment of the safety conditions ensuring the rise of Global Earthing Systems. Starting from the definition of Global Earthing System given by CENELEC Document HD 637 SI and from the results of the studies done on the last years on the interconnected earthing systems inside MV networks, the paper proposes some directions of deepening on the topic of Global Safety. Some of the themes whom the paper deals with are: the correct definition of proximity, interconnection and quasi-equipotentiality of the earth electrodes belonging to a Global Earthing System; the influence of the presence of HV/MV stations on h…

Ground-Fault Current Transfer at the Transition Station of a Combined Overhead-Cable Line. A Parametric Analysis

2007

When a substation is fed by a combined overhead-cable transmission line, a significant part of the ground fault current flows through the grounded cable sheaths and discharges into the earth at the transition station, where cables are connected to the overhead line. If the transition station is a dead-end steel pole structure, the local ground electrode, small and of high resistance, could be inadequate to maintain the ground potential rise within safety limits in case of a fault to ground at the receiving end substation. Based on a circuit model approach, the paper presents a parametric analysis of the fault current distribution between the faulted substation and the transition station, ta…

Waveguide filters for satellites

2007

This article describes the historical evolution, and its theoretical and technological features of waveguide filters. All-metal waveguide filters have been widely used in satellite payloads since the advent of the first space communication systems four decades ago. In this period, such technology has been continuously evolving due to the increasing requirements demanded to these components. Special attention has also been paid to present the most recent advances in the development of CAD tools for satellite filters, which are based on full-wave electromagnetic analysis methods. Finally, the compact solutions for the input and output stages of satellite payloads are focused on, thus consider…

Time optimal control of a satellite with two rotors

2001

International audience; The aim of this work is to investigate the structure of time-optimal trajectories for a control system modelizing a satellite with two rotors attached along its two fixed axes. Our results extend to the general case those obtained by Sussmann and Tang in an unpublished paper where they treat a particular case described below. We end up finding a sufficient family of four parameters trajectory types. The main tools used are the Pontryagin Maximum Principle, switching functions and envelope theory. © 2001 EUCA.

Identification of the inertial model for innovative semi-immergible USV (SI-USV) drone for marine and lakes operations

2015

The proposed project shows the results obtained in the implementation and testing in lacustrine and marine environment of a nautical remote controlled vehicle with surface navigation and innovative features Semi-Immergible (SI-USV). This vehicle is based on a pending patent belonging to Palermo University (Patent Pending RM2012A000209 and Patent RM2014Z000060) concerning innovative semi-immersible vehicles (SI-Drone), that can be remotely controlled from the ground, air, satellite and sea also during the semi-immersible operation. Given its low draft, the electric powered vehicle, coupled with jet propulsion, makes it possible to navigate in shallow waters, coastal shipping or sandbars.

Multitemporal mapping of peri-urban carbon stocks and soil sealing from satellite data.

2017

Abstract Peri-urbanisation is the expansion of compact urban areas towards low-density settlements. This phenomenon directly challenges the agricultural landscape multifunctionality, including its carbon (C) storage capacity. Using satellite data, we mapped peri-urban C stocks in soil and built-up surfaces over three areas from 1993 to 2014 in the Emilia-Romagna region, Italy: a thinly populated area around Piacenza, an intermediate-density area covering the Reggio Emilia-Modena conurbation and a densely anthropized area developing along the coast of Rimini. Satellite-derived maps enabled the quantitative analysis of spatial and temporal features of urban growth and soil sealing, expressed …

Losing DNA methylation at repetitive elements and breaking bad

2021

Abstract Background DNA methylation is an epigenetic chromatin mark that allows heterochromatin formation and gene silencing. It has a fundamental role in preserving genome stability (including chromosome stability) by controlling both gene expression and chromatin structure. Therefore, the onset of an incorrect pattern of DNA methylation is potentially dangerous for the cells. This is particularly important with respect to repetitive elements, which constitute the third of the human genome. Main body Repetitive sequences are involved in several cell processes, however, due to their intrinsic nature, they can be a source of genome instability. Thus, most repetitive elements are usually meth…
