Polyunsaturated fatty acids in cultured cardiomyocytes : effect on physiology and beta-adrenoceptor function

This study was carried out to investigate the influence of the membrane fatty acid composition on the basal electrical and contractile activities and the response to beta-adrenergic stimulation of rat cardiac muscle cells in culture. Cells were grown for 3 days in a conventional serum culture medium and then incubated for 24 h in synthetic media containing either n-6 or n-3 as the sole source of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). The n-6/n-3 ratio in the phospholipids was 0.9 in the n-3 cells and 13.1 in the n-6 cells compared with 6.3 in controls cells. Abstract The gas chromatographic retention behaviour of methylethyl, 1-methylpropyl, 2-methylpropyl, 1,2-dimethylpropyl, 1-methylbutyl and 3-methylbutyl esters of benzoic and o-, m- and p-chlorobenzoic acids on low-polarity (SE-30) and polar (OV-351) capillary columns under several temperature-programmed and isothermal conditions is reported. The retention data and the Kovats retention indices for all 24 components are given and the separation of a complex mixture is discussed. The retention index increments have been used to examine the effects of chain branching and chlorine substitution. The results are compared with those for n-alkyl benzoates and monochlorobenzoates.

The role of the membrane lipid composition and the individual Trp residues in the conformational rearrangement of gramicidin A along the folding pathway to its channel conformation has been examined in phospholipid bilayers by means of previously described size-exclusion high-performance liquid chromatography HPLC-based strategy (Bano et al. (1991) Biochemistry 30, 886). On X-saturated formations of finite groups

[EN] In the paper, a Frattini-like subgroup associated with a class X of simple groups is introduced and analysed. The corresponding X-saturated formations are exactly the X-local ones introduced by Förster. Our techniques are also very useful to highlight the properties and behaviour of omega-local formations. In fact, extensions and improvements of several results of Shemetkov are natural consequences of our study.

During imbibition, initially connected oil is displaced until it is trapped as immobile clusters. While initial and final states have been well described before, here we image the dynamic transient process in a sandstone rock using fast synchrotron-based X-ray computed microtomography. Wetting film swelling and subsequent snap off, at unusually high saturation, decreases nonwetting phase connectivity, which leads to nonwetting phase fragmentation into mobile ganglia, i.e., ganglion dynamics regime. The present study examines the effects of dietary saturated (hydrogenated coconut oil) and polyunsaturated (salmon oil) fats on the composition and metabolism of lipoproteins in growing rats fed on protein-deficient diets. Recent studies indicate that ambient temperature may modulate obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) severity. However, study results are contradictory warranting more investigation in this field. We analysed 19,293 patients of the European Sleep Apnoea Database (ESADA) cohort with restriction to the three predominant climate zones according to the Koppen-Geiger climate classification: Cfb (warm temperature, fully humid, warm summer), Csa (warm temperature, summer dry, hot summer), and Dfb (snow, fully humid, warm summer). Abstract For a non-empty class of groups C , two subgroups A and B of a group G are said to be C -connected if 〈 a , b 〉 ∈ C for all a ∈ A and b ∈ B . Given two sets π and ρ of primes, S π S ρ denotes the class of all finite soluble groups that are extensions of a normal π-subgroup by a ρ-group. EXPLANATORY FACTORS OF MARKET POWER IN THE BANKING SYSTEM

The aim of the study is to analyse the explanatory factors of market power in the banking system. Using as laboratory the Spanish banking system in the period 1986–2002, results show an increase of market power from the mid-1990s. Of the set of variables that the model posits as explaining market power, those with the greatest explanatory power are size, efficiency and specialization; concentration is not significant. This last result shows the limitations of the approaches, studies and decision-making rules of economic policy that uses market concentration as a proxy for the degree of competition.
