Inferring phytoplankton community composition with a fatty acid mixing model

The taxon specificity of fatty acid composition in algal classes suggests that fatty acids could be used as chemotaxonomic markers for phytoplankton composition. The applicability of phospholipid-derived fatty acids as chemotaxonomic markers for phytoplankton composition was evaluated by using a Bayesian fatty acid-based mixing model. International audience; Cyclopropane fatty acid (CFA) synthesis was investigated in Oenococcus oeni. The data obtained demonstrated that acid-grown cells or cells harvested in the stationary growth phase showed changes in fatty acid composition similar to those of ethanol-grown cells. An increase of the CFA content and a decrease of the oleic acid content were observed. The biosynthesis of CFAs from unsaturated fatty acid phospholipids is catalysed by CFA synthases. Inhibition of fatty acid delta 6- and delta 5-desaturation by cyclopropene fatty acids in rat liver microsomes.

delta 6-Desaturation of linoleic acid and delta 5-desaturation of dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid were measured in liver microsomes from rats fed fresh Baobab seed oil containing cyclopropene fatty acids (malvalic acid and sterculic acid) or heated Baobab seed oil practically devoid of these fatty acids or control oil. The presence of cyclopropene fatty acids in the fresh Baobab oil diet highly depressed both desaturations, but delta 6- more than delta 5-desaturation. The decreased capacity of microsomes to desaturate was reflected in the lower arachidonic acid content in microsomal phospholipids from rats fed this oil. ABSTRACT Cyclopropane fatty acids (CFAs) are synthetized in situ by the transfer of a methylene group from S -adenosyl- l -methionine to a double bond of unsaturated fatty acid chains of membrane phospholipids. This conversion, catalyzed by the Cfa synthase enzyme, occurs in many bacteria and is recognized to play a key role in the adaptation of bacteria in response to a drastic perturbation of the environment. The photosynthetic characteristics of many species of plants are influenced by the light intensity under which the plant is grown. This is shown by the light saturation curves for CO2 uptake. Both the light intensity required for saturation and the light-saturated rate of CO2 uptake increase with the light intensity under which the plant is grown. Photosynthetic adaptation to different light levels involves balanced changes of many leaf factors. Low-light and high-light plants differ in a number of component steps of photosynthesis as well as in the structure and composition of the photosynthetic apparatus and in the leaf anatomy (see reviews by Boardman 1977; Wild 1979).

Inductors operated in quasi saturation in dc–dc converters allow reduction of the core size and realization costs; on the other hand, they imply an increase of dissipated power that can jeopardize the thermal stability of the converter. In this article, this issue is studied by a mathematical model able to represent both the inductor nonlinearity and its temperature dependence. National audience; L’objectif du présent article est de faire le point sur l’origine des acides gras polyinsaturés dans la rétine neurale, en se focalisant en particulier sur le DHA. Nous appuierons notre propos en particulier sur nos données récentes obtenues sur des sujets décédés chez qui la rétine neurale et le couple EPR/choriocapillaire ont été prélevés et analysés pour leur contenu en lipides. Le profil en acides gras du tissu adipeux nous a servi de marqueur de consommation. Nous avons ainsi pu rechercher si les teneurs en AGPI de la rétine neurale sont le reflet des habitudes alimentaires des sujets.

Modification of the monoaminergic neurotransmitters in frontal cortex and hippocampus by dietary trans alpha linolenic acid in piglets

International audience; The effect of partial isomerization of dietary α-linolenic acid on the monoaminergic neurotransmitters in piglets was studied. After feeding the animals for 14 days with diets containing or not trans α-linolenic acid, neurotransmitters related to the monoaminergic function were quantified in the frontal cortex and in the hippocampus. The partial isomerization of dietary α-linolenic acid resulted in increasing endogenous monoamine levels in the frontal cortex (+55% for dopamine) and was related to a very low incorporation of trans polyunsaturated fatty acids.
