Gas-phase supersaturation effects on morphology properties of ZnO nano and microstructures grown by PVT

2016

A systematic study of the morphology evolution of ZnO nanostructures grown by physical vapour transport was carried out. The evolution of the shape with the growth time is shown to depend on the different gas-phase supersaturation and temperature conditions encountered in the crystallization zone of the tube furnace. The observed morphology transitions are discussed, and a growth model for ZnO nanostructures is given.

Effects of Anandamide and Noxious Heat on Intracellular Calcium Concentration in Nociceptive DRG Neurons of Rats

2007

As an endogenous agonist at the cannabinoid receptor CB1 and the capsaicin-receptor TRPV1, anandamide may exert both anti- and pronociceptive actions. Therefore we studied the effects of anandamide and other activators of both receptors on changes in free cytosolic calcium ([Ca2+]i) in acutely dissociated small dorsal root ganglion neurons (diameter: ≤30 μm). Anandamide (10 μM) increased [Ca2+]iin 76% of the neurons. The EC50was 7.41 μM, the Hill slope was 2.15 ± 0.43 (mean ± SE). This increase was blocked by the competitive TRPV1-antagonist capsazepine (10 μM) and in Ca2+-free extracellular solution. Neither exclusion of voltage-gated sodium channels nor additional blockade of voltage-gate…

Stabilization of a nutraceutical omega-3 fatty acid by encapsulation in ultrathin electrosprayed zein prolamine.

2010

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is a long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid of the omega-3 series (omega-3), which exerts strong positive influences on human health. The target of this study was the stabilization by encapsulation of this bioactive ingredient in zein ultrathin capsules produced by electrospraying. The zein ultrathin DHA encapsulation was observed by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy to be more efficient against degradation under both ambient conditions and in a confined space (so-called headspace experiment). In the latter case, that more closely simulates a sealed food packaging situation, the bioactive DHA was considerably more stable. By fitting the degradation data to a specific auto-deco…

Plasma distributions observed in a 2.45 GHz hydrogen discharge

2014

The existence of various spatial distributions of hydrogen plasma in a pulsed 2.45 GHz microwave discharge is demonstrated. The data has been obtained through optical emission diagnostics utilizing an ultra-fast CCD camera system with multi-channel plate (MCP) intensifiers, and a wavelength-filtered photodiode recording temporal light emission signals of hydrogen atoms and molecules. It has been observed that the magnetic field topology and strength are determining the transitions between different plasma patterns and spectral saturation times while neutral gas pressure and microwave power show a weaker influence on the profiles but affect the emitted light intensity.

A geochemical survey of the telese hypothermal spring, southern Italy: Sulfate anomalies induced by crustal deformation

2002

This study deals with a chemical survey (major ions and Li+, F–, Br–, and ) on water samples collected from April 1998 to April 1999, from the Telese thermal spring, southern Italy, in order to investigate possible variations in the chemical composition of the spring. Water samples are of the calcium bicarbonate type, with small fluctuations in outlet temperature (20.05 ± 0.23°C), pH (6.23 ± 0.16), and TDS (2415 ± 35 mg/l). The concentrations of major ions stayed nearly constant, except for . All analyzed waters are saturated or oversaturated relative to calcite and dolomite. The higher saturation indices of the water samples relative to calcite and dolomite observed during the summer of 19…

Evaluation of Green Roof Ageing Effects on Substrate Hydraulic Characteristics

2020

The vegetated substrate of green roofs may undergo various chemical and physical changes with time. Minidisk infiltrometer (MDI) tests were conducted to assess the short-term variations of the near-saturated hydraulic conductivity, K0, in the extensive green roof test plot established at the University of Palermo. Sampling was repeated four times: before planting (Age 0) and then after four months (Age 1), seven months (Age 2) and ten months (Age 3). A total of 144 infiltration tests were conducted at two pressure heads, h0 = −3 cm and h0 = −0.5 cm and infiltration data analysed by the Zhang (Soil Science Society of America Journal 61(4):1024–1030, 1997) model. Both K-3 and K-0.5 underwent …

A field assessment of the Simplified Falling Head technique to measure the saturated soil hydraulic conductivity

2012

Abstract The Simplified Falling Head (SFH) technique to measure field saturated soil hydraulic conductivity, Kfs, has received little testing or comparison with other techniques. Different experiments were carried out to i) determine the effect of ring size on the measured conductivity; ii) compare the SFH and Pressure Infiltrometer (PI) techniques in a clay loam soil; and iii) evaluate the approach used in the SFH methodology to estimate the α* parameter. Sampling a relatively large number of sites allowed to detect statistically significant relationships between the Kfs values obtained with rings differing in diameter (0.15 and 0.30 m, respectively). The ring size effect was substantial (…

One-Dimensional Transient Analysis of Rainfall Infiltration in Unsaturated Volcanic Ash

2015

The paper presents a one-dimensional hydro-mechanical analysis of rainfall infiltration in a loose volcanic ash and the utilisation of a factor of safety for the implementation of an early-warning system. Three different rainy seasons with different rainfall patterns were analysed . The analysis aims to understand the influence of the antecedent rainfall on the wetting front, the pore-water pressures and the factor of safety. The analysis was carried out in the context of a Master project of the first author at the Laboratory for Soil Mechanics of EPFL.

Hydrological and hydraulic behaviour of a surface flow constructed wetland treating agricultural drainage water in northern Italy.

2020

Abstract A surface flow constructed wetland (SFCW) treating agricultural drainage water was investigated with the aim to detect modifications in hydrological and hydraulic characteristics after more than a decade of operation. Ponded infiltration tests were conducted to estimate the saturated hydraulic conductivity, Ks, of the surface soil layer at the point scale. At the global scale, infiltration rate, i, was computed from the water balance to detect leakages from the pervious wetland surface. Tracer tests were conducted to analyse the existence of preferential flow inside the system and to estimate its hydraulic retention time (HRT). Clogging phenomena occurred given a mean Ks value of 3…

Impacts of thinning of a Mediterranean oak forest on soil properties influencing water infiltration

2017

[EN] In Mediterranean ecosystems, special attention needs to be paid to forest¿water relationships due to water scarcity. In this context, Adaptive Forest Management (AFM) has the objective to establish how forest resources have to be managed with regards to the efficient use of water, which needs maintaining healthy soil properties even after disturbance. The main objective of this investigation was to understand the effect of one of the AFM methods, namely forest thinning, on soil hydraulic properties. At this aim, soil hydraulic characterization was performed on two contiguous Mediterranean oak forest plots, one of them thinned to reduce the forest density from 861 to 414 tree per ha. Th…
