Ensuring the performance and scalability of peer-to-peer distributed virtual environments

2010

Large scale distributed virtual environments (DVEs) have become a major trend in distributed applications. Peer-to-peer (P2P) architectures have been proposed as an efficient and truly scalable solution for these kinds of systems. However, in order to design efficient P2P DVEs these systems must be characterized, measuring the impact of different client behavior on system performance. This paper presents the experimental characterization of P2P DVEs. The results show that the saturation of a given client has an exclusive effect on the surrounding clients in the virtual world, having no noticeable effect at all on the rest of clients. Nevertheless, the interactions among clients that can tak…

Cloud-based elastic architecture for distributed video encoding: Evaluating H.265, VP9, and AV1

2020

Abstract Areas with social and business impact such as entertainment, healthcare, surveillance, and e-learning would benefit from improvements in video coding and transcoding services. New codecs, such as AV1, are being developed to deal with new demands for high video resolutions with bandwidth constraints and quality requirements. However, these new codecs have high computational requirements and new strategies are needed to accelerate their processing. Cloud computing offers interesting features such as on-demand resource allocation, multitenancy, elasticity, and resiliency among others. Deploying video coding and transcoding services on these infrastructures is suitable because it allow…

A new system architecture for crowd simulation

2009

Crowd simulation requires both rendering visually plausible images and managing the behavior of autonomous agents. Therefore, these applications need an efficient design that allows them to simultaneously handle these two requirements. Although several proposals have focused on the software architectures for these systems, no proposals have focused on the computer systems supporting them. In this paper, we analyze the computer architectures used in the literature to support distributed virtual environments. Also, we propose a distributed computer architecture which is efficient enough to support simulations of thousand of autonomous agents. This proposal consists of a cluster of interconnec…

Analyzing the performance of a cluster-based architecture for immersive visualization systems

2008

Cluster computing has become an essential issue for designing immersive visualization systems. This paradigm employs scalable clusters of commodity computers with much lower costs than would be possible with the high-end, shared memory computers that have been traditionally used for virtual reality purposes. This change in the design of virtual reality systems has caused some development environments oriented toward shared memory computing to require modifications to their internal architectures in order to support cluster computing. This is the case of VR Juggler, which is considered one of the most important virtual reality application development frameworks based on open source code. Thi…

Efficient information gathering from large wireless sensor networks

2018

Abstract Considering large WSNs and comparing data aggregation approaches in terms of scalability, robustness, completeness, and time/energy effectiveness, recent research has asserted the superiority of serial structure-free approaches over serial structure-based ones, and over both parallel structure-free and parallel structure-based techniques. But, in spite of the fact that serial structure-free approaches excel in large and medium-scale networks, their underlying path-construction algorithms are not optimal and can be improved by reducing the involved communications and further shortening the visiting path. To respond to this need, this paper presents Geometric Serial Search (GSS); a n…

Domain-Knowledge Optimized Simulated Annealing for Network-on-Chip Application Mapping

2013

Network-on-Chip architectures are scalable on-chip interconnection networks. They replace the inefficient shared buses and are suitable for multicore and manycore systems. This paper presents an Optimized Simulated Annealing (OSA) algorithm for the Network-on-Chip application mapping problem. With OSA, the cores are implicitly and dynamically clustered using knowledge about communication demands. We show that OSA is a more feasible Simulated Annealing approach to NoC application mapping by comparing it with a general Simulated Annealing algorithm and a Branch and Bound algorithm, too. Using real applications we show that OSA is significantly faster than a general Simulated Annealing, withou…

UnipaBCI a novel general software framework for brain computer interface

2017

The increasing interest in Brain Computer Interface (BCI) requires new fast, reliable and scalable frameworks that can be used by researchers to develop BCI based high performance applications in efficient and fast ways. In this paper is presented "UnipaBCI", a general software framework for BCI applications based on electroencephalogra-phy (EEG) that can fulfill these new needs. A visual evoked potentials (VEP) application has also been developed using the proposed framework in order to test the modular architecture and the overall performance. Different types of users (beginners and experts in BCI) have been involved during the "UnipaBCI" experimental test and they have exhibited good and…

Scalable Creation of Long-Lived Multipartite Entanglement.

2017

We demonstrate the deterministic generation of multipartite entanglement based on scalable methods. Four qubits are encoded in Ca+40, stored in a microstructured segmented Paul trap. These qubits are sequentially entangled by laser-driven pairwise gate operations. Between these, the qubit register is dynamically reconfigured via ion shuttling operations, where ion crystals are separated and merged, and ions are moved in and out of a fixed laser interaction zone. A sequence consisting of three pairwise entangling gates yields a four-ion Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state |ψ=(1/2)(|0000+|1111), and full quantum state tomography reveals a state fidelity of 94.4(3)%. We analyze the decoherence o…

Logical Key Hierarchy for Group Management in Distributed Online Social Networks

2016

Distributed Online Social Networks (DOSNs) have recently been proposed to shift the control over user data from a unique entity to the users of the DOSN themselves. In this paper, we focus our attention on the problem of privacy preserving content sharing to a large group of users of the DOSNs. Several solutions, based on cryptographic techniques, have been recently proposed. The main challenge here is the definition of a scalable and decentralized approach that: i) minimizes the re-encryption of the contents published in a group when the composition of the group changes and ii) enables a fast distribution of the cryptographic keys to all the members (n) of a group, each time a new user is …

A Case Study on Agriture: Distributed HLA-Based Architecture for Agricultural Robotics

2011

In agricultural robotics, as in other robotic systems, one of the most important parts is the control architecture. This paper describes the definition of a new control architecture specially designed for groups of robots in charge of doing maintenance tasks in agricultural environments. This architecture has been developed having in mind principles as scalability, code reuse, abstraction hardware and data distribution. Moreover, it is important that the control architecture can allow coordination and cooperation among the different elements in the system. The architecture presented in this paper implements all these concepts by means of the integration of different systems, such as Player,…
