Point field models for the galaxy point pattern modelling the singularity of the two-point correlation function

2002

There is empirical evidence that the two-point correlation function of the galaxy distribution follows, for small scales, reasonably well a power-law expression $\xi(r)\propto r^{-\gamma}$ with $\gamma$ between 1.5 and 1.9. Nevertheless, most of the point field models suggested in the literature do not have this property. This paper presents a new class of models, which is produced by modifying point fields commonly used in cosmology to mimic the galaxy distribution, but where $\gamma=2$ is too large. The points are independently and randomly shifted, leading to the desired reduction of the value of $\gamma$.

Gauged extended supergravity without cosmological constant: No-scale structure and supersymmetry breaking

2002

We consider the interplay of duality symmetries and gauged isometries of supergravity models giving N-extended, spontaneously broken supergravity with a no-scale structure. Some examples, motivated by superstring and M-theory compactifications are described.

VLBI Observations of Radio Galaxies

1994

We undertook a project of observation of a complete sample of radio galaxies with the VLBI technique, in order to test: a) current models on jet dynamics and b) the radio source unified schemes. A preliminary analysis based on the data obtained by us for 10 galaxies of our sample indicates that the parsec scale structure in low power radio galaxies (FR-I) and high power radio galaxies (FR-II) is essentially the same.

Multiscaling Properties of Large-Scale Structure in the Universe

1995

The large-scale distribution of galaxies and galaxy clusters in the universe can be described in the mathematical language of multifractal sets. A particularly significant aspect of this description is that it furnishes a natural explanation for the observed differences in clustering properties of objects of different density in terms of multiscaling, the generic consequence of the application of a local density threshold to a multifractal set. The multiscaling hypothesis suggests ways of improving upon the traditional statistical measures of clustering pattern (correlation functions) and exploring further the connection between clustering pattern and dynamics.

The XMM-Newton survey of the ELAIS-S1 field

2006

We have surveyed with XMM-Newton the central ~0.6 deg2 region of the ELAIS-S1 field down to flux limits of ~5.5X10-16 cgs (0.5-2 keV, S band), ~2X10-15 cgs (2-10 keV, H band), and ~4X10-15 cgs (5-10 keV, HH band). We detect a total of 478 sources, 395 and 205 of which detected in the S and H bands respectively. We identified 7 clearly extended sources and estimated their redshift through X-ray spectral fits with thermal models. In four cases the redshift is consistent with z=0.4. We have computed the angular correlation function of the sources in the S and H bands, finding best fit correlation angles theta_0=5.2+/-3.8 arcsec and theta_0=12.8+/-7.8 arcsec respectively. A rough estimate of th…

Filaments in observed and mock galaxy catalogues

2010

Context. The main feature of the spatial large-scale galaxy distribution is an intricate network of galaxy filaments. Although many attempts have been made to quantify this network, there is no unique and satisfactory recipe for that yet. Aims. The present paper compares the filaments in the real data and in the numerical models, to see if our best models reproduce statistically the filamentary network of galaxies. Methods. We apply an object point process with interactions (the Bisous process) to trace and describe the filamentary network both in the observed samples (the 2dFGRS catalogue) and in the numerical models that have been prepared to mimic the data.We compare the networks. Neutrino Mass Ordering from Oscillations and Beyond: 2018 Status and Future Prospects

2018

The ordering of the neutrino masses is a crucial input for a deep understanding of flavor physics, and its determination may provide the key to establish the relationship among the lepton masses and mixings and their analogous properties in the quark sector. The extraction of the neutrino mass ordering is a data-driven field expected to evolve very rapidly in the next decade. In this review, we both analyze the present status and describe the physics of subsequent prospects. Firstly, the different current available tools to measure the neutrino mass ordering are described. Namely, reactor, long-baseline (accelerator and atmospheric) neutrino beams, laboratory searches for beta and neutrinol…

Socialização parental: adaptação ao Brasil da escala ESPA29

2011

The objective of this study was to analyze the psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of the ESPA29 Parental Socialization Scale (Musitu & Garcia, 2001). This scale allows measuring parental styles - authoritative, authoritarian, indulgent, and negligent - by means of two independent dimensions of parental conduct extracted from parents' use of different socialization practices. Using a sample of 2.105 Brazilian adolescents from 10 to 18 years old, the structure of two factors that define the scale - Acceptance/Implication and Strictness/Imposition - has been replicated using an exploratory factorial analysis. In order to complete a proper replication of the ESPA29 scale structure…

Cosmologie des théories de gravite modifiées

2017

The study of physical cosmology has reached an exciting era. For the first time in human history, a quantitative model for the formation and the evolution of the Universe exists, which explains a wide range of phenomena and has been tested with incredible accuracy during the last century. Moreover, weare approaching a time when a bounty of high quality cosmological data will be available, allowing us to use cosmology as a tool to test fundamental physics. In particular, as the large-scale structures of the Universe are governed by gravity, cosmology can help us to asses the correctness of Albert Einstein’s general relativity. This idea fueledmost of the work described in this manuscript,in wh…
