Arresting soliton collapse in two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger systems via spatiotemporal modulation of the external potential

We predict stable, collapse-free solitonslike structures in two-dimensional nonlinear Schr\"odinger systems in subdiffractive regimes, accomplished by a spatiotemporal modulation of the external potential. We investigate the scaling laws, the stability, and the dynamical properties of these subdiffractive solitons.
Constraints of reduced density-matrix functional theory for the two-dimensional homogeneous electron gas

Reduced density-matrix functional theory (RDMFT) has become an appealing alternative to density-functional theory to describe electronic properties of strongly correlated systems. Here we derive exact conditions for the suitability of RDMFT to describe the two-dimensional homogeneous electron gas, which is the base system for semiconductor quantum dots and quantum Hall devices, for example. Endocannabinoids are potent regulators of synaptic strength. They are generally thought to modify neurotransmitter release through retrograde activation of presynaptic type 1 cannabinoid receptors (CB1Rs). In the cerebellar cortex, CB1Rs regulate several forms of synaptic plasticity at synapses onto Purkinje cells, including presynaptically expressed short-term plasticity and, somewhat paradoxically, a postsynaptic form of long-term depression (LTD). Here we have generated mice in which CB1Rs were selectively eliminated from cerebellar granule cells, whose axons form parallel fibers. Correlation functions for a strongly coupled boson system and plane partitions.

A quantum phase model is introduced as a limit for very strong interactions of a strongly correlated q -boson hopping model. The exact solution of the phase model is reviewed, and solutions are also provided for two correlation functions of the model. Explicit expressions, including both amplitude and scaling exponent, are derived for these correlation functions in the low temperature limit. The amplitudes were found to be related to the number of plane partitions contained in boxes of finite size.
Relaxation of self-entangled many-arm star polymers

We present a description of the relaxation of star polymers based on the conformational scaling properties predicted by Daoud and Cotton and confirmed in our recent simulations. We identify three typical relaxation mechanisms. The first describes elastic deformation of the overall shape. Its relaxation time is nearly independent off. A second type of relaxation occurs via rotational diffusion. We predict that the relaxation time should scale with Nwlfz-v where Y is the correlation length exponent. In view of various contradictory theoretical equations relating the interfacial tension σ between phase-separated polymer solutions to the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter of the system, the idea that σ should depend on the extent of the ‘hump’ in the concentration dependence of the Gibbs energy of mixing was studied. This investigation is based on 12 series of σ( T ) measurements reported in the literature and on additional experiments for the system cyclohexane/polystyrene. Conformations, Transverse Fluctuations and Crossover Dynamics of a Semi-Flexible Chain in Two Dimensions

We present a unified scaling description for the dynamics of monomers of a semiflexible chain under good solvent condition in the free draining limit. We consider both the cases where the contour length $L$ is comparable to the persistence length $\ell_p$ and the case $L\gg \ell_p$. Our theory captures the early time monomer dynamics of a stiff chain characterized by $t^{3/4}$ dependence for the mean square displacement(MSD) of the monomers, but predicts a first crossover to the Rouse regime of $t^{2\nu/{1+2\nu}}$ for $\tau_1 \sim \ell_p^3$, and a second crossover to the purely diffusive dynamics for the entire chain at $\tau_2 \sim L^{5/2}$. Invariant pattern recognition based on 1-D Wavelet functions and the polynomial decomposition

Abstract A new filter, consisting of 1-D Wavelet functions is suggested for achieving optical invariant pattern recognition. The formed filter is actually a real function, hence, it is theoretically possible to be implemented under both spatially coherent and spatially incoherent illuminations. The filter is based on the polynomial expansion, and is constructed out of a scaled bank of filters multiplied by 1-D Wavelet weight functions. The obtained output is shown to be invariant to 2-D scaling even when different scaling factors are applied on the different axes. The computer simulations and the experimental results demonstrate the potential hidden in this technique.

This paper reports the formation and characterization of spherical GaAs quantum dots obtained by nanosecond pulsed laser ablation in a liquid (ethanol or methanol). The produced bare GaAs nanoparticles demonstrate rather narrow size distribution which depends on the applied laser power density (from 4.25 to 13.9 J/cm 2 in our experiments) and is as low as 2.5 nm for the highest power used. The absolute value of the average diameter also decreases significantly, from 13.7 to 8.7 nm, as the laser power increases in this interval.
