Synthesis and some reactions of linear poly(iminohexamethylene)

1987

By complete reduction of polyamide-6, poly(iminohexamethylene) (PIH) was obtained. This new linear polyamine was characterized by i.r. and by n.m.r. spectroscopy as well as by titration. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements and X-ray diffraction found a high degree of crystallinity whose extent strongly depends upon the pre-treatment. The polyammonium salts that form with inorganic and organic acids show the typical polyelectrolyte effect in viscometry. PIH was alkylated with methyl iodide or acrylic acid and was acylated with N-BOC-l-α-amino acids or N-BOC-ω-amino-alkylenecarboxylic acids. The properties of these derivatives are described.

Scanning electron microscopy of heterochromatin in chromosome spreads of male germ cells in Schistocerca gregaria (Acrididae, Orthoptera) after tryps…

1996

Chromosome spreads, prepared from testes of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria, were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after varying periods of preincubation in trypsin. The emphasis of the study was on the appearance of heterochromatin. A trypsin pretreatment of 5 sec resulted in a smooth surface on the chromatin throughout and the heterochromatin was highly electron-emissive. The facultatively heterochromatic X chromosome was clearly visible in interphase spermatogonia and in pachytene and late prophase I spermatocytes. Chromomeres of autosomal bivalents could be recognized in pachytene cells. Centromeric heterochromatin segments were very prominent in autosomes of la…

Characterization and differentiation of rock varnish types from different environments by microanalytical techniques

2017

© 2017 Elsevier B.V. We investigated rock varnishes collected from several locations and environments worldwide by a broad range of microanalytical techniques. These techniques were selected to address the challenges posed by the chemical and structural complexity within the micrometer- to nanometer-sized structures in these geological materials. Femtosecond laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (fs LA-ICP-MS), scanning transmission X-ray microscopy-near edge X-ray adsorption fine structure spectroscopy (STXM-NEXAFS) in combination with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of focused ion beam (FIB) ultra-thin (100–200 nm) sections, conventional and polarization microscop…

Concept of Biogenic Ferromanganese Crust Formation: Coccoliths as Bio-seeds in Crusts from Central Atlantic Ocean (Senghor Seamount/Cape Verde)

2011

At depths of 2,000 to 3,000 m, seamounts from the Cape Verde archipelago (Central Atlantic Ocean) are largely covered with ferromanganese crusts. Here we studied 60 to 150 mm thick crusts from the Senghor Seamount (depth: 2257.4 m). The crusts have a non lamellated texture and are covered with spherical nodules. The chemical composition shows a dominance of MnO2 (26.1%) and Fe2O3 (38.8%) with considerable amounts of Co (0.74%) and TiO2 (2.1%). Analysis by scanning electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) revealed a well defined compositional zonation of micro-layers; the distribution pattern of Mn does not match that of Fe. Analysis by high resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed…

Transmission to Eels, Portals of Entry, and Putative Reservoirs of Vibrio vulnificus Serovar E (Biotype 2)

2001

ABSTRACT Vibrio vulnificus serovar E (formerly biotype 2) is the etiologic agent that is responsible for the main infectious disease affecting farmed eels. Although the pathogen can theoretically use water as a vehicle for disease transmission, it has not been isolated from tank water during epizootics to date. In this work, the mode of transmission of the disease to healthy eels, the portals of entry of the pathogen into fish, and their putative reservoirs have been investigated by means of laboratory and field experiments. Results of the experiments of direct and indirect host-to-host transmission, patch contact challenges, and oral-anal intubations suggest that water is the prime vehicle…

An in vitro comparison of different adhesive strategies on the micro push-out bond strength of a glass fiber post

2010

Objectives: To evaluate in vitro the push-out bond strengths of a glass fiber post adhesively luted with self-etching resin based and self-adhesive luting cements, as well as modified application procedure of self-adhesive luting cements in combination with single step self-etch adhesives. Materials and methods: Fifty single-rooted human maxillary central incisor teeth were endodontically treated and divided into five groups (n=10). Glass fiber posts (RelyX Fiber Post) were cemented with the following materials: group 1: ED Primer II/Panavia F 2.0 (PAN); group 2: RelyX Unicem (RU); group 3: Maxcem (MC); group 4: Adper Prompt L-Pop (PLP)/RelyX Unicem; group 5: Optibond all-in-one (OB)/Maxcem…

Strong Bonding of Single C60 Molecules to (1 × 2)-Pt(110): an STM/DFT Investigation.

2007

International audience; The interaction of single C60 molecules with the (1 × 2)-Pt(110) surface has been studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations on slab models. Molecules are observed to be frozen at room temperature and are found to be almost exclusively in the same configuration. Extensive DFT calculations show that this configuration is the global energy minimum, suggesting that adsorbed molecules have enough rototranslational freedom to escape from the numerous local minima. The adsorption energy (3.81 eV) is the strongest ever found for C60, and it is roughly proportional to the number of the Pt and C atoms at contact distance. Analysi…

Analysis of composition, morphology, and biosynthesis of cuticular wax in wild type bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) and its glossy mutant

2021

Abstract In this study, cuticular wax load, its chemical composition, and biosynthesis, was studied during development of wild type (WT) bilberry fruit and its natural glossy type (GT) mutant. GT fruit cuticular wax load was comparable with WT fruits. In both, the proportion of triterpenoids decreased during fruit development concomitant with increasing proportions of total aliphatic compounds. In GT fruit, a higher proportion of triterpenoids in cuticular wax was accompanied by a lower proportion of fatty acids and ketones compared to WT fruit as well as lower density of crystalloid structures on berry surfaces. Our results suggest that the glossy phenotype could be caused by the absence o…
