Visual aftereffects and sensory nonlinearities from a single statistical framework

2015

When adapted to a particular scenery our senses may fool us: colors are misinterpreted, certain spatial patterns seem to fade out, and static objects appear to move in reverse. A mere empirical description of the mechanisms tuned to color, texture, and motion may tell us where these visual illusions come from. However, such empirical models of gain control do not explain why these mechanisms work in this apparently dysfunctional manner. Current normative explanations of aftereffects based on scene statistics derive gain changes by (1) invoking decorrelation and linear manifold matching/equalization, or (2) using nonlinear divisive normalization obtained from parametric scene models. These p…

Una caccia al cinghiale, mostri marini e temi nilotici nei mosaici pavimentali dell’ottocentesco palazzo Forcella a Palermo: tra suggestioni classich…

2016

The Marquise Forcella palace in Palermo shows a curious mixture of neoclassical and neo-medieval styles. It was built in the years immediately after the revolution of 1820. Particularly close to the Borbonic Court, Enrico Forcella was the administrator of the restoration of the Royal Palace in Palermo. As he had at his disposal the same specialized workers of the Royal Palace, he decided to copy some of the artworks from King Roger’s room and the Cappella Palatina. He also added some details derived from other Norman buildings in Palermo. These included the Zisa Castle, but he also sourced the Islamic Palaces of Andalusia, in particular the Alhambra in Granada and the Alcazar in Seville. A …

La voce, il gesto, la scena. Elementi teatrali nelle commedie latine del XII e XIII secolo

2019

Persistent lipsticks and their lip prints: new hidden evidence at the crime scene

2000

Latent lip print test results produced by permanent lipsticks are presented in this work. This cosmetic product, contrary to conventional lipsticks, does not leave visible prints and can thus be overlooked at the crime scene. As print vehicles the study used ceramics, glass, cotton fabric and paper. Lip prints were left to dwell for different periods and were later developed using aluminum powder, cobalt oxide powder and magnetic powder. The results show that identifiable lip prints can be obtained up to 30 days after being produced.

Democratic Education and Promotion of Social Skills in Schools and Classrooms as Primary Prevention: An Overview of the Discourse in Germany

2012

Because of its strong impact as a social environment, school represents one of the primary focal points of students’ lives and therefore also functions as a powerful agent of socialization during adolescence. Thus the school is a significant object of study not only as a crime scene, but also as a factor in facilitating or deterring violence.

Dynamics of the scenery flow and geometry of measures

2015

We employ the ergodic theoretic machinery of scenery flows to address classical geometric measure theoretic problems on Euclidean spaces. Our main results include a sharp version of the conical density theorem, which we show to be closely linked to rectifiability. Moreover, we show that the dimension theory of measure-theoretical porosity can be reduced back to its set-theoretic version, that Hausdorff and packing dimensions yield the same maximal dimension for porous and even mean porous measures, and that extremal measures exist and can be chosen to satisfy a generalized notion of self-similarity. These are sharp general formulations of phenomena that had been earlier found to hold in a n…

Superfici materiche nella percezione della scena urbana

2013

2012

In 2005 the Argentinian writer Eduardo Sacheri published The Question in Their Eyes (La pregunta de sus ojos).  The novel narrates on a double level, both fictional and temporal, the decision of a retired prosecutor to come to terms with a case of rape and murder which had taken place years earlier: his life had been shattered by the consequences of that tragedy, and writing about it would be a way to start living again.  The director Juan José Campanella - widely famous for having directed episodes of the television series Law & Order, but especially as the director of successful films such as El hijo de la novia - decided to adapt the novel and involved Sacheri in the project: the close c…

3D Object Modeling by Sharing Visual Attributes across Poses and Scales

2014

Scene parsing aims at understanding a scene and the arrangements of the objects in it. While this is a task human beings are pretty good at [7], a machine needs to: recognize the kind of scene (indoor vs outdoor, bedroom vs. living room etc.)[4], detect and recognize 3D objects across multiple poses and scales [8, 5], infer the geometrical arrangement of the objects in the scene [2, 1], etc.. In the proposed framework, a 3D object is modeled as a graph. Each node in the graph represents a visual attribute automatically discovered by considering features that are consistently and repeatedly present across different poses and scales. Such visual attributes are different from “parts” [5], whic…

A gray-level 2D feature detector using circular statistics

1997

Abstract This paper presents a new method for corner and circular feature detection in gray-level images. It is based on the application of standard statistical techniques to the distribution of gradient orientations in a circular neighborhood of the prospective feature point. An evaluation using standard procedures and a comparison with other approaches is presented. Results show the robustness of this method as compared to the other corner detectors analyzed. The main novelties are the possibility of detecting points that are centers of circular symmetries, and discriminating between junctions, which are classified into corners (two-edge junctions) and multiple edge junctions.
