Temporal Fairness Provisioning in Multi-Rate Contention-Based 802.11e WLANs
2005
The IEEE 802.11e extensions for QoS support in WLAN define the transmission opportunity (TXOP) concept, in order to limit the channel holding times of the contending stations in the presence of delay-sensitive traffic. We evaluate the use of TXOP for a different purpose: "temporal fairness" provisioning among stations employing different data rates. We show that the equalization of the channel access times allows each station to obtain its throughput basically (1) proportional to its transmission rate, and (2) independent of the transmitted frame length. This also improves the aggregate throughput of the overall WLAN. For a given TXOP limit, i.e., a granted channel access time, a station is…
A Compilation of Protocols to Visualize Enzymes Following Electrophoretic Separation
1994
The following tables supply protocols for the electrophoretic separation as well as for the succeeding visualization of enzymes. Separation systems and enzyme visualization procedures are adjusted to each other.
Volatility transmission in the CO<inf>2</inf> and energy markets
2009
The main consequence of the launch, in 2005, of the European Union Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) has been the establishment of a price for carbon emissions. Thus, major energy producers in Europe are now aware of the impact of their polluting activities. The interest in analysing the carbon markets from a financial point of view has exponentially increased since the launch of the EU ETS. However, no research articles have focused their attention on the volatility transmission between CO 2 and energy markets. The aim of this paper is to fill this gap in the literature. Specifically, our particular interest is to examine whether or not conditional volatility is transmitted across those mar…
ENERGY FOR ROMANIA FROM RENEWABLE RESOURCES
2012
The European Union admits the fact that energy is essential, for the development of the European economy, but that it also constitutes a challenge, due to the impact on climate change. In Romania, as well as in all the countries of the European Union, which have chosen to promote renewable energy, governments have come up with support frameworks for investors in this field. In Romania’s case, the option for green schemes and compulsory quotas was selected, meaning that each energy producer, which produces renewable energy, receives a number of green certificates for each MW produced, depending on the technology it uses. The price of such a green certificate varies between 27 – 55 Euros. The…

Spatial analysis of lanner falcon habitat preferences: Implications for agro-ecosystems management at landscape scale and raptor conservation
2014
Abstract Sicily hosts the largest European population of the endangered lanner falcon, a poorly known species which needs conservation planning based on habitat preferences. A distribution model on 10 × 10 km cells of Sicily was described using Generalized Linear Models and variation partitioning methods. This modelling approach extracted explanatory factors, pure and joint effects of greatest influence from subsets of variables controlled for multi-collinearity and spatial autocorrelation. Analytical cartography used the environmental favourability function to assess habitat preferences, and the insecurity index estimated the degree to which lanner falcon occupancy is represented in the Na…
A CUDA-based implementation of an improved SPH method on GPU
2021
We present a CUDA-based parallel implementation on GPU architecture of a modified version of the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. This modified formulation exploits a strategy based on the Taylor series expansion, which simultaneously improves the approximation of a function and its derivatives with respect to the standard formulation. The improvement in accuracy comes at the cost of an additional computational effort. The computational demand becomes increasingly crucial as problem size increases but can be addressed by employing fast summations in a parallel computational scheme. The experimental analysis showed that our parallel implementation significantly reduces the runti…
Robust Selective Stereo SLAM without Loop Closure and Bundle Adjustment
2013
This paper presents a novel stereo SLAM framework, where a robust loop chain matching scheme for tracking keypoints is combined with an effective frame selection strategy. The proposed approach, referred to as selective SLAM (SSLAM), relies on the observation that the error in the pose estimation propagates from the uncertainty of the three-dimensional points. This is higher for distant points, corresponding to matches with low temporal flow disparity in the images. Comparative results based on the reference KITTI evaluation framework show that SSLAM is effective and can be implemented efficiently, as it does not require any loop closure or bundle adjustment.
Searching for differences in Swift's intermediate GRBs
2010
Gamma-ray bursts are usually classified through their high-energy emission into short-duration and long-duration bursts, which presumably reflect two different types of progenitors. However, it has been shown on statistical grounds that a third, intermediate population is needed in this classification scheme, although an extensive study of the properties of this class has so far not been done. The large amount of follow-up studies generated during the Swift era allows us to have a suficient sample to attempt a study of this third population through the properties of their prompt emission and their afterglows. Our study is focused on a sample of GRBs observed by Swift during its first four y…
