The Variscan structural and metamorphic evolution of the eastern Southalpine basement

The basement of the Southern Alps (northern Italy) belongs to the southernmost part of the European Variscan mountain belt. In contrast to other areas of the Alps, the post-Variscan metamorphic and tectonic overprint is weak and therefore permits the unravelling of the Variscan tectonometamorphic evolution of this region. Overprinting criteria and the mapping of the penetrative structural elements (S2 and L2) allow three deformational events to be distinguished. Major Variscan deformation (D2) in the Southern Alps commenced in the Carboniferous and lasted until the end of the Late Carboniferous. Abstract We report on the first occurrence of Pan-African eclogite from the Mozambique belt of northern Malawi, east-central Africa. We describe aspects of (1) the pattern of Pan-African transcurrent and subhorizontal shear zones and how these shear zones relate to eclogite-facies metamorphism and (2) the P – T – t evolution of the eclogite. Finally, we discuss the significance of eclogite-facies metamorphism and shear-zone deformation for the assembly of Gondwana. The first major deformation event involved sinistral and dextral transcurrent and top-ESE shearing and occurred at ∼580–550 Ma. Abstract The Lower Ugab and Goantagab structural domains are located at the junction between the N–S trending Kaoko and the E–W trending Damara belts (NW Namibia), where Neoproterozoic metavolcano-sedimentary sequences were intruded by several syenitic/granitic plutons. We present here new U–Pb ages on zircon grains from the Voetspoor and Doros plutons. Together with petrological, geochemical and structural data we evaluate the timing of the deformation and relation to the geodynamics during the final stage of Gondwana amalgamation. Abstract The Abu Barqa Metamorphic Suite (ABMS) represents the oldest part of the Arabian–Nubian Shield in southern Jordan. It comprises tonalitic gneiss, metasediments including schist and paragneiss, and granitic gneiss, intruded by later granitic bodies. Geochemically, the majority of the schist samples have shale and Fe-shale protoliths, while the paragneisses represent metagreywacke. Tectonic discrimination diagrams indicate that the protolith of the ABMS was deposited at an active continental margin/island arc setting. A cross-sectional study in an Schistosoma haematobium endemic area of rural Zimbabwe examined 483 resident women between the ages of 20 and 49 years who were interviewed about fertility. S. haematobium ova in genital tissue was found to be significantly associated with infertility.

A section of the orogenic middle crust (Orlica-nienik Dome, Polish/Czech Central Sudetes) was examined to constrain the duration and significance of deformation (D) and intertectonic (I) phases. In the studied metasedimentary synform, three deformation events produced an initial subhorizontal foliation S1 (D-1), a subsequent subvertical foliation S2 (D-2) and a late subhorizontal axial planar cleavage S3 (D-3).
