Student engagement in Finnish lower secondary school

This thesis examined the engagement of students at lower secondary schools in Finland. Two independent cross-sectional data sets collected in 2010 (N = 821) and 2013 (N = 2485) were analyzed using both variable-centered and personcentered methods. The thesis analyzed the associations between teacher– student relationships, family support for students’ learning, peer support at school, control and relevance of school work, students’ future aspirations and goals, school burnout, behavior at school, and truancy from school. To be able to support young children in learning to learn—an ability that requires adapting often-unprecedented changes in society—teachers need to be aware of the ways in which children understand learning. In this qualitative study, 177 micro-interviews conducted with 41 Finnish children were analysed using an abductive method to understand their perceptions of learning in a preschool. Reciprocal associations between social competence and language and pre-literacy skills in preschool

The present study examined reciprocal associations between children’s social competence and language and pre-literacy skills across the preschool year. Participants were 441 children (six-year-olds; 212 boys, 229 girls) and their teachers. Teachers rated children’s social competence in the autumn and again in the spring, using the Multisource Assessment of Social Competence Scale (MASCS), which produced sum scores for cooperating skills, empathy, impulsivity and disruptiveness. Esta investigación pretende conocer las expectativas de futuro de familias inmigrantes y profesorado sobre los estudiantes de Educación Primaria en la Comunidad Autónoma del País Vasco. El proceso de asentamiento de la primera generación de inmigrantes transnacionales en la última década pone de manifiesto la necesidad de seguir de cerca los procesos de incorporación de sus hijos/as en el nuevo país. Se han estudiado las expectativas de 302 familias inmigrantes y del profesorado tutor de sus hijos en referencia a logros académicos y profesionales, aprendizaje de lenguas y desarrollo de las relaciones sociales del alumnado.
