Associations Between Reading Skills, Interest in Reading, and Teaching Practices in First Grade
2017
ABSTRACTThis study examined associations between classroom-level reading fluency, comprehension, interest in reading, and teaching practices. Participants were 466 children from 21 classrooms. Reading fluency and interest were assessed at the beginning and end of Grade 1, reading comprehension at the end of Grade 1. Teaching practices were observed with the Early Childhood Classroom Observation Measure (ECCOM). Teachers were more likely to use teacher-directed methods in classrooms where children had poorer initial reading fluency. In classrooms with mostly child-centered methods, children showed better reading fluency, comprehension, and higher interest, whereas in classrooms with predomin…
Exploring responsive mathematics teaching
2018
Responsive mathematics teaching places students’ ideas and scientific thinking in a central position. It is based upon the expectation that students have resourceful scientific thinking. The responsive teacher advances the acquisition of mathematical knowledge by pursuing the substance of students’ ideas and fostering the practices of the mathematical community. This study focuses on illustrating the responsive mathematics teaching accounts of a second graders teacher. To fulfil this aim, the teaching structure of one teacher has been thoroughly scrutinized and presented in detail. The data, collected through a semi structured interview, classroom observation and field notes, has been analy…
Observed teaching practices interpreted from the perspective of school-based teacher educators
2021
A teacher supervising the school practice of student teachers is regarded as an expert who sets an example of good teaching to future teachers and chooses teaching practices that support pupils’ cognitive and social development. This study examines the implementation of teaching practices and the interpretation of these practices by school-based teacher educators who supervise school practice of student teachers at universities’ innovation schools. Teaching practices were examined using observation and video-stimulated recall interviews. The school-based teacher educators widely used and described in detail individual teaching practices that supported pupils’ cognitive development. However,…
The information and communication n…

2016
Monilukutaito lukion historian opetuksessa
2019
Lukion opetussuunnitelman perusteisiin (Opetushallitus, 2015) on sisällytetty Monilukutaidot ja media -aihekokonaisuus, jossa monilukutaito määritellään taitoina tulkita ja tuottaa erilaisia tekstejä. Jokaisen opettajan odotetaan opettavan oman tiedonalansa tekstitaitoja, joiden alakohtaisuus pohjaa tiedonmuodostuksen käytänteisiin. Tällä korostetaan eri oppiaineiden sisältötiedon hallinnan lisäksi myös tekstitaitojen kehittymistä kaikissa oppiaineissa. Tässä artikkelissa tarkastelemme, millaisena monilukutaito ja erityisesti tiedonalan tekstitaitojen opetus näyttäytyvät lukion historian opetuksessa. Tutkimuksen aineisto on kerätty suomenkielisten lukioiden historian opettajille suunnatun k…
Pluskvamperfekti, pluperfect or past perfect? : presenting English tenses in upper secondary school books
2014
Aloitettaessa uuden kielen opiskelu opeteltavaa on valtava määrä ja aikamuodot ovat yksi tärkeä opittava asia. Kun opitaan ilmaisemaan tapahtuman aika oikein, monilta väärinkäsityksiltä voidaan välttyä viestin välittämisessä. Todennäköisin lähde aikamuotojen muodostamisohjeille on kirja, jota koulussa käytetään ja siirryttäessä asteelta toiselle, on sillä merkitystä miten aikamuodot on kyseisessä kirjassa esitetty. Tämä tutkimus lähtikin selvittämään juuri tätä yhteyttä aikamuotojen esityksessä siirryttäessä lukiosta ylemmälle tasolle ja se oli luonteeltaan kvalitatiivinen sisällön analyysi. Tutkimuksella haluttiin selvittää kuinka aikamuodot on esitetty lukion oppikirjoissa verrattuna ylem…
Adolescent Health Literacy and Neighbourhood Features: HBSC Findings from Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovakia
2021
The role of supportive environments on health, wellbeing, and longevity has been widely recognized. However, there is no strong empirical evidence on the association between health literacy (HL) as a particular health-related competence and neighbourhoods. Therefore, the aim of the study was to assess the association between the features of neighbourhoods and the level of HL competencies of young people from three countries (Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia). Self-reported data from an international sample of 11,521 students aged 13–15 years participating in the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children Study (HBSC) in the year 2018 were included in the analyses. The level of HL shows a stro…
Ethical underpinnings for the development of health literacy in schools : ethical premises (‘why’), orientations (‘what’) and tone (‘how’)
2018
Background Schools are seen as crucial environments to influence and develop the health literacy of new generations, but without sufficient reflection on the ethical underpinnings of intentions and interventions around health literacy. In contrast, we argue here that ethics are fundamental to all education. The article adopts a ‘One world’ approach that generalizes broadly across the so-called Global North and Global South. It also generalizes across various age groups among school pupils, advocating age appropriate application of the arguments advanced. Main text Our analysis examines why health literacy should be promoted in schools and argues that the purpose should embrace the values of…
Addressing health literacy in schools in the WHO European Region
2019
Health literacy is a key determinant of health (1). Several studies have reported a positive association between high levels of health literacy and better health outcomes in children (2-4). For example, the WHO collaborative Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey found that health literacy is one of the main factors contributing to health differences and is associated with educational outcomes such as academic achievement and post-school aspirations (4). Health literacy is a useful phenomenon in the understanding and reduction of avoidable health disparities because it can be learned and developed (4–6). However, children’s health literacy should not merely be seen as a risk…
