Modelling and Simulation of a Novel Liquamatic Fire Monitor A fully automated fire recognition- and suppression system based on infrared machine visi…

2015

Masteroppgave i mekatronikk - Universitetet i Agder, 2015 Background: Fire monitors are effective fire extinguishing apparatuses which combine high accuracy with long range. As part of the mechatronic trend, research has during recent years started to delve into the automation of re monitors. This involves proper actuation and control of re monitors in order to extinguish re. Up to this point, however, research has primarily been concerned with indoor operation. The aim of the present thesis is to develop a system for an electrically actuated re monitor which detects, localizes and suppresses re in an outdoor environment without the need for manual operation. Solution & Experiments: Fire is…

Redesign of Utility Robot for Carbothermic Test Reactor

2015

Masteroppgave i mekatronikk - Universitetet i Agder, 2015 Production of aluminum based on a carbothermic reaction is an exciting field of research. It could potentially reduce the energy consumption of aluminum production drastically. Alcoa Norway Carbothermic has been involved in the field of carbothermic aluminum research since 1998. As a part of development of their newest carbothermic test reactor, the Hot Bowl reactor, Alcoa Norway Carbothermic has proposed a thesis regarding redesign of a machine used to lower different types of measuring equipment down into the reactor, called the utility robot. This thesis describe the process leading up to a new utility robot solution. The new util…

Oil whip-induced wear in journal bearings

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00170-014-5805-8 This paper investigates the effect of oil whirl and oil whip in fluid film radial bearings due to possible metallic contact. The degree of metallic contact and thereby wear and tear between rotating shafts and bearing bushes is assessed by measuring electric currents through the oil film. The current as well as the voltage varied in accordance with the contact ratio between the shaft and bush in the fluid film radial bearing. The gauge signal thus indicates the degree of metallic contact based on the thi…

Prediction of crack onset strain in composite laminates at mixed mode cracking

2009

Failure process of continuous fiber reinforced composite laminates in tension usually starts with appearance of intralaminar cracks. In composite laminates with complex lay-ups and/or under combined loading, intralaminar cracks may develop in plies with different reinforcement directions. A necessary part of mixed mode cracking models is the criterion of failure. For propagation-controlled fracture it is usually formulated in terms of energy release rates and their critical values of the particular composite material. Intralaminar fracture toughness of unidirectionally reinforced glass/epoxy composite was experimentally determined at several mode I and mode II ratios. It is found that the c…

Experimental investigation of effect of printing direction and surface roughness on the mechanical properties of AlSi10Mg-alloy produced by selective…

2021

The additive manufacturing has initially gained popularity for production of non-loadbearing parts and components or in the fields where the material strength and ductility are less important such as modelling and rapid prototyping. But as the technology develops, availability of metal additive manufacturing naturally dictates the desire to use the produced components in load-bearing parts. This requires not-only a thorough documentation on the mechanical properties but also additional and independent research to learn the expected level of variation of the mechanical properties and what factors affect them. The presented paper investigates strength, ductility, hardness, and microstructure …

Search for Anomalous Production of Events with a Photon, Jet, b-quark Jet, and Missing Transverse Energy

2009

We present a signature-based search for the anomalous production of events containing a photon, two jets, of which at least one is identified as originating from a b quark, and missing transverse energy ((sic)(T)). The search uses data corresponding to 2.0 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity from p (p) over bar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 1.96 TeV, collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. From 6.697 47 x 10(6) events with a photon candidate with transverse energy E-T > 25 GeV, we find 617 events with (sic)(T) > 25 GeV and two or more jets with E-T > 15 GeV, at least one identified as originating from a b quark, versus an expectation of 607 +/- 113 event…

Deformation measurement of circular steel plates using projected fringes

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00170-013-5276-3 Fringe projection is a versatile method for mapping the surface topography. In this paper, it is used to measure the deformation of steel plates under static penetration. Here, the surface shape changes continuously. Therefore, it is important to minimize the registration time. To achieve this, we apply a method of fringe location with subpixel accuracy that requires only a single exposure for each registration. This is in contrast to phase shifting techniques that require at least three separate exp…

Bounds on transient phase plastic deformations in optimal design of steel frames subjected to cyclic loads

2009

A minimum volume multicriterion design of elastic perfectly plastic steel frames subjected to a combination of quasi-static fixed and cyclic loads, bounding the transient phase plastic deformations, is proposed. The problem is formulated according to a plastic shakedown criterion, so that incremental and instantaneous collapse are certainly prevented when the frame is subjected to very strongly amplified cyclic loads. The further condition that the structure must also behave elastically in serviceability conditions is imposed. Since the steady-state loading history is known it is possible to directly bound the steady-state plastic deformations. By applying a suitable own bounding theorem, i…
