SCIENTIFIC THINKING: THE BACKBONE OF MODERN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION
2014
Science and Technology Education (STE) along with Artistic and Pragmatic Education today is continuously and fast developing branch of education to satisfy actual needs of modern life. It follows the development of scientific research of real life phenomena and implementation of corresponding results in practice. In other words, changes within our life are closely connected with corresponding changes in our education, because educational activities of any person as well as society in total mean specially organized gaining of life experience (knowledge, values, skills) for life (cognition, consideration, behaviour).
Bourdieu en la educación científica: consecuencias para la enseñanza y la investigación
2012
Over the last decades, the development and establishment of a sociocultural approach to science education have led to an increasing interest in other theoretical frameworks such as the sociology of science and the sociology of education of Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002). With the purpose of contributing to the advancement of the appropriation of Bourdieu’s work by research in science education, this paper presents some of the most important ideas of this author and discusses their implications for science education and research.

ESP
Identifying Pathways to Computer Science : The Long-Term Impact of Short-Term Game Programming Outreach Interventions
2019
Short-term outreach interventions are conducted to raise young students’ awareness of the computer science (CS) field. Typically, these interventions are targeted at K–12 students, attempting to encourage them to study CS in higher education. This study is based on a series of extra-curricular outreach events that introduced students to the discipline of computing, nurturing creative computational thinking through problem solving and game programming. To assess the long-term impact of this campaign, the participants were contacted and interviewed two to five years after they had attended an outreach event. We studied how participating in the outreach program affected the students’ perceptio…

Learning the electric field concept as oriented research activity
2003
This work is grounded in a constructivistic conception of the learning of science, more particularly on the model known as teaching–learning as oriented research. In accordance with this theoretical basis we have developed an empirical research project to investigate the teaching of electrostatics in high schools. The designs developed have enabled us to assess the learning achieved by the students from conceptual, procedural, and attitudinal stances. According to our findings we can say that the materials developed and the way we have worked with them have contributed to more significant learning and favored a more positive attitude toward the subject. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The impact of the pre-instructional cognitive profile on learning gain and final exam of physics courses: a case study.
2006
The case study described in this paper investigates the relationship among some pre-instructional knowledge, the learning gain and the final physics performance of computing engineering students in the introductory physics course. The results of the entrance engineering test (EET) have been used as a measurement of reading comprehension, logic and mathematics skills and basic physics knowledge of a sample of 47 Computing Engineering freshmen at the University of Palermo (Italy). These data give a significant picture of the initial knowledge status of a student choosing engineering studies. The students' physics learning gain has been calculated using a standardized tool in mechanics: the fo…
