Calibration of a neutron time-of-flight multidetector system for an intensity interferometry experiment
2004
We present the details of an experiment on light particle interferometry. In particular, we focus on a time-of-flight technique which uses a cyclotron RF signal as a start and a liquid scintillator time signal as a stop, to measure neutron energy in the range of En approximate to 1.8-150 MeV. This dynamic range (up to 300 ns) is much larger than the beam bunch separation (54 ns) of the AGOR cyclotron (KVI). However, the problem of a short burst period is overcome by using the time information obtained from a fast projectile fragment phoswich detector. The complete analysis procedure to extract the final neutron kinetic energy spectra, is discussed. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
The photon tagging facility at the Saskatchewan Accelerator Laboratory
1993
Abstract A photon tagging facility has been constructed for use with the c.w. electron beam at the Saskatchewan Accelerator Laboratory (SAL). The facility consists of a “clam-shell” type magnetic spectrometer with a 62 channel plastic scintillator focal plane detector allowing a post-bremsstrahlung electron energy resolution of 1%. Specialized focal plane and coincidence electronics have been designed and constructed at SAL and allows experiments to be performed with average tagged photon rates of greater than 1 × 108/s.
Determination of Qβ values from endpoint energies of beta spectra
1979
Abstract A plastic scintillator telescope is described for determining beta endpoint energies up to 15 MeV. The response function of the telescope was measured using monoenergetic electrons from a betatron. A nonlinear procedure for unfolding the measured beta spectra on the basis of the experimental response function was tested successfully.

Large underground, liquid based detectors for astro-particle physics in Europe: scientific case and prospects
2007
This document reports on a series of experimental and theoretical studies conducted to assess the astro-particle physics potential of three future large-scale particle detectors proposed in Europe as next generation underground observatories. The proposed apparatus employ three different and, to some extent, complementary detection techniques: GLACIER (liquid Argon TPC), LENA (liquid scintillator) and MEMPHYS (\WC), based on the use of large mass of liquids as active detection media. The results of these studies are presented along with a critical discussion of the performance attainable by the three proposed approaches coupled to existing or planned underground laboratories, in relation to…
Design, Construction and Performance of the Detector for UFFO Burst Alert & Trigger Telescope
2013
One of the key aspects of the upcoming Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO) pathfinder for Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) identification is the UFFO Burst Alert & Trigger Telescope (UBAT). The scientific propose of UBAT is to detect and locate as fast as possible the GRBs in the sky. This is achieved by using a coded mask aperture camera scheme with a wide field of view (FOV) and selecting a X-ray detector of high quantum efficiency and large detection area. This X-ray detector of high quantum efficiency and large detection area is called the UBAT detector. The UBAT detector consists of 48 × 48 Yttrium Oxyorthosilicate (YSO) scintillator crystal arrays and Multi Anode Photomultiplier Tubes (MAPMTs)…
DOI measurement with monolithic scintillation crystals: A primary performance evaluation
2007
We report a first assessment of image quality enhancement achieved by the implementation of depth of interaction detection with monolithic crystals. The method of interaction depth measurement is based on analogue computation of the standard deviation with an enhanced charge divider readout. This technique of depth of interaction detection was developed in order to provide fast and determination of this parameter at a reasonable increase of detector cost. The detector consists of an large-sized monolithic scintillator coupled to a position sensitive photomultiplier tube. A special design feature is the flat-topped pyramidal shape of the crystal. This reduces image compression near the edges…
Proof-of-principle measurements with a liquid-scintillator detector using wavelength-shifting optical modules
2018
Based on test-beam measurements, we study the response of a liquid-scintillator detector equipped with wavelength-shifting optical modules, that are proposed e.g. for the IceCube experiment and the SHiP experiment, and adiabatic light guides that are viewed either by a photomultiplier tube or by an array of silicon photomultipliers. We report on the efficiency, the time resolution and the detector response to different particle types and point out potential ways to improve the detector performance.
Design and implementation of the UFFO burst alert and trigger telescope
2012
The Ultra Fast Flash Observatory pathfinder (UFFO-p) is a telescope system designed for the detection of the prompt optical/UV photons from Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), and it will be launched onboard the Lomonosov spacecraft in 2012. The UFFO-p consists of two instruments: the UFFO Burst Alert and Trigger telescope (UBAT) for the detection and location of GRBs, and the Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT) for measurement of the UV/optical afterglow. The UBAT isa coded-mask aperture X-ray camera with a wide field of view (FOV) of 1.8 sr. The detector module consists of the YSO(Yttrium Oxyorthosilicate) scintillator crystal array, a grid of 36 multi-anode photomultipliers (MAPMTs), and analog and digi…
