On September 1st 1726 Palermo was hit by a violent earthquake. Although it did not bring about the destruction of the city, the earthquake caused widespread and extensive damage to the architectural heritage. The local insti- tutions carried out a series of actions involving representatives of the technical culture. These actions affected the subsequent appearance of the urban pattern and influenced the construction methods of the time. Crossing the data taken from chronicles of the time, from maps produced after the earthquake and above all copious archival documents, the research aims to reconstruct the state in which Palermo was after that tragic event, highlighting a number of aspects. …

The hydraulic resistance of young olive trees grafted on rootstocks with contrasting size-controlling potential was measured 30, 90, 360 and 480 days after grafting. Olive (Olea europaea L.) clones inducing plant vigorous growth (Leccino ‘Minerva’, LM) or dwarfing (Leccino ‘Dwarf’, LD) were studied in different scion/rootstock combinations (LD/LD, LD/LM, LM/LD, LM/LM). Plants growing on LD root systems developed lower leaf surface areas (about 50% less) than plants grafted on LM rootstocks. Abstract Grafting of fruiting vegetables is an effective technique to overcome pests and diseases in modern cropping systems and it is often used to improve yield and fruit quality. Eggplant is an important vegetable crop that benefits significantly from grafting. The objective of this research was to evaluate the modification of canopy architecture of ''Flordastar'' peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch) grafted onto rootstocks with different vigour, by the use of fractal dimension (D). The hypothesis was that different vigour rootstocks are able to modify the complexity of the branching pattern and that this effect can be assessed by a geometric parameter such as the fractal dimension (D) of the 2D projection of tree branching structure.
