Primary lateral sclerosis and hereditary spastic paraplegia in sporadic patients. An important distinction in descriptive studies.

2016

Abstract Differentiating between primary lateral sclerosis and apparently sporadic hereditary spastic paraplegia patients is an important but difficult issue in transversal studies. Consequently, these patients have been indistinctly classified as primary lateral sclerosis or sporadic HSP in different publications, further contributing to the confusion between both diseases. In our opinion, Schule et al have not reliably excluded PLS in their cohort of simplex HSP, what could affect their reported results. We think that a clearer distinction should be made between both diseases and we propose new definitions and criteria to facilitate this differentiation. This article is protected by copyr…

mRNA COVID-19 vaccines do not increase the short-term risk of clinical relapses in multiple sclerosis

2021

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, immune-mediated disorder of the central nervous system. A novel coronavirus, namely SARS-CoV-2, has been recently responsible for the highly infectious disease referred as COVID-19, rapidly spreading all over the world. Many vaccines have been developed to control COVID-19 pandemic, including the mRNA vaccines Pfizer/BioNTech (BNT162b2) and Moderna (mRNA1273).1 The vaccination of people with MS (pwMS) has been recommended by several national and international MS societies. However, effectiveness and safety of anti-COVID-19 mRNA vaccines in MS need to be confirmed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the short-term risk of clinical relapses in pwMS in …

Multiple sclerosis survival: a population-based study in Sicily

2009

Background and purpose:  There are few population-based surveys on multiple sclerosis (MS) survival. To investigate MS survival in MS patients recruited during surveys conducted in Sicily. Methods:  Multiple sclerosis patients identified during previous surveys were randomly matched to two referent subjects by residence, year of birth, and gender. Living status was obtained by municipality records (end of follow-up June, 30th 2007) and, for the deceased, date and causes of death were searched. Kaplan-Meier plots were used to calculate differences in mortality between MS patients and referent subjects. MS risks for mortality with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were also calculated. Results:  …

Characteristics and treatment of Multiple Sclerosis-related trigeminal neuralgia: An Italian multi-centre study

2019

Abstract Background The prevalence of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients is higher than in the general population and its management can be particularly challenging. Our aim is to describe the characteristics, treatment and prognostic factors of MS-related TN in a retrospective multicentre study. Methods Neurologists members of the RIREMS group (Rising Researchers in MS) enrolled MS patients with a TN diagnosis and filled out a spreadsheet comprising their clinical data. Results Population consisted of 298 patients. First-choice preventive treatments were carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine. A surgical procedure was performed in 81 (30%) patients, most commonly gamma …

Corrigendum to “Polyvascular subclinical atherosclerosis in familial hypercholesterolemia: The role of cholesterol burden and gender” [Nutr Metab Car…

2019

International audience; Background and aim: Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) is a genetic disease characterized by a heterogeneous phenotype. The assessment of cardiovascular (CV) risk is challenging for HeFH. Cholesterol burden (CB) allows to estimate the lifelong exposure to high levels of cholesterol. The aim of this study was to analyze the distribution of subclinical athero-sclerosis and the relationship between atherosclerosis and the CB in a sample of HeFH patients, focusing on sex-related differences. Methods and Results: 154 asymptomatic HeFH subjects underwent coronary-artery-calcium score (CACs) and Doppler ultrasound of carotid and femoral arteries. Yearly lipid…

Antioxidants as treatment for neurodegenerative disorders.

2002

Oxidative stress is a ubiquitously observed hallmark of neurodegenerative disorders. Neuronal cell dysfunction and cell death due to oxidative stress may causally contribute to the pathogenesis of progressive neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, as well as acute syndromes of neurodegeneration, such as ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke. Neuroprotective antioxidants are considered a promising approach to slowing the progression and limiting the extent of neuronal cell loss in these disorders. The clinical evidence demonstrating that antioxidant compounds can act as protective drugs in neurodegenerative disease, however, is still relatively scarce. …

Implications of extreme serum neurofilament light chain levels for the management of patients with relapsing multiple sclerosis

2021

Background: Serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) is a promising biomarker to complement the decision-making process in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. However, although sNfL levels are able to detect disease activity and to predict future disability, the growing evidence has not yet been translated into practicable recommendations for an implementation into clinical routine. Methods: The observation of a patient with extensive inflammatory activity in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) along with an extremely high sNfL level in the absence of any clinical symptoms prompted us to investigate common characteristics of our MS patients with the highest sNfL levels in a retrospective cohort st…
