On the Volcanology of the West Eifel Maars

1987

The Quaternary alkali-basaltic volcanic field of the West Eifel is the classic maar region of the world. Related to the formation of the continental rift zone which extends through Central Europe, ultrabasic magmas rose from the upper mantle through the continental crust and fed 240 small volcanoes. Next to scoria cones with their lava flows, maars are most frequent and represent 25% of the volcanoes. Since 1820 and until 1970 their origin was mostly believed to be related to explosive exsolution of juvenile volatile phases. Since 1970, however, several authors have suggested that the West Eifel maars are phreatomagmatic in origin, i.e. rising magma contacted groundwater in near-surface lev…

The 15 March 2007 explosive crisis at Stromboli Volcano, Italy: assessing physical parameters through a multidisciplinary approach

2011

Basaltic volcanoes are dominated by lava emission and mild explosive activity. Nevertheless, many basaltic systems exhibit, from time to time, poorly documented and little-understood violent explosions. A short-lived, multiblast explosive crisis (paroxysmal explosion) occurred on 15 March 2007 during an effusive eruptive crisis at Stromboli (Italy). The explosive crisis, which started at 20:38:14 UT, had a total duration of ∼5 min. The combined use of multiparametric data collected by the permanent instrumental networks (seismic, acoustic, and thermal records) and a field survey carried out immediately after the event enabled us to constrain the eruptive dynamics and quantify physical param…

Outgassing: Influence on speed of magma fragmentation

2013

[1] Predicting explosive eruptions remains an outstanding challenge. Knowledge of the controlling parameters and their relative importance is crucial to deepen our understanding of conduit flow dynamics and accurately model the processes involved. This experimental study sheds light on one important parameter—outgassing—and evaluates its influence on magma fragmentation behavior. We perform fragmentation experiments based on the shock tube theory at room temperature on natural pyroclastic material with a connected porosity ranging from 15% to 78%. For each sample series, we determine the initial pressure (P) required to initiate magma fragmentation (fragmentation threshold, Pth). Furthermor…

El manuscrito del 'Cancionero de Baena' (PN1) : Descripción codicológica y evolución histórica

2018

The present article attempts to establish as accurately as possible the chronological trajectory of the unique codex of the Cancionero de Baena (PN1 in the Dutton nomenclature). It begins with a detailed examination of the codicological aspects of the manuscript, which serve to date its origin to around 1465. This origin, combined with the historical data, supports a conjecture that the manuscript probably belonged to Gonzalo de Beteta, an official of both Enrique IV and the Catholic Kings. It would have passed from him to his grandson, Jorge de Beteta y Cardenas, who gave it to the Real Biblioteca de El Escorial in 1576. The article then follows the vicissitudes of the manuscript from its …

The Quaternary Eifel Volcanic Fields

1983

The Quaternary (ca. 0.7 Ma) volcanic fields in the western central part of the Rhenish Massif (West Eifel and East Eifel) have formed roughly synchronously with the main Quaternary phase of uplift The fields are 50 and 30 km long, elongated in NW-SE direction, contain ca. 240 and 90 volcanoes and are dominantly made of K-rich nephelinitic-leucititic-basanitic scoria cones. The larger West Eifel differs from the East Eifel field by more mafic and silica-undersaturated magmas, greater abundance and larger size of peridotite xenoliths and near absence of highly differentiated magmas contrasted with the occurrence of four highly differentiated phonolite volcanoes in the smaller East Eifel field…

Maars of the Westeifel, Germany

2008

Within the Westeifel Volcanic Field 27% of the 250 Quaternary eruptive centers are maars. Maars form as a result of a highly explosive interactive process between rising melt and groundwater. In the Westeifel, probably thermal water plays an important role for the productive phreatomagmatic interaction process and, con-sequently, the high number of maars. The Westeifel maars show all transitions to scoria cones. Only the youngest maars are filled by a maar lake or a raised bog, and are well preserved. The older maars show a low diameter to depth ratio. Nearly one third of the Westeifel maars were formed during the Weichselian glaciation period. The isostatic movements during the increasing …

Geochemistry and volatile content of magmas feeding explosive eruptions at Telica volcano (Nicaragua)

2017

Telica volcano, in north-west Nicaragua, is a young stratovolcano of intermediate magma composition producing frequent Vulcanian to phreatic explosive eruptions. The Telica stratigraphic record also includes examples of (pre)historic sub-Plinian activity. To refine our knowledge of this very active volcano, weanalyzedmajor element composition and volatile content of melt inclusions fromsomestratigraphically significant Telica tephra deposits. These include: (1) the Scoria Telica Superior (STS) deposit (2000 to 200 years Before Present; Volcanic Explosive Index, VEI, of 2–3) and (2) pyroclasts from the post-1970s eruptive cycle (1982; 2011). Based on measurements with nanoscale secondary ion…

Grooving by Nd:YAG laser treatment

2000

Abstract The properties of the laser beam have been used to produce deep and thin grooves in metals, melted material being removed with the assistance of a high velocity gas. Preliminary experiments show that the geometry and the location of the gas inlet tube are the main parameters governing the evacuation of the scoria. The influence of the nature of the materials on the depth of the grooves is discussed from examination of the grooves realized on various metals (copper, aluminum, titanium,…). Finally, a statistical study is performed to indicate the parameters that have to be controlled to secure regular grooves. It appears that the groove width is not too much affected by parameter var…
