Background: Hepatitis C virus infection (HCV) is not infrequent among haemodialysis patients. Most published reports suggest that patient-to-patient spread, either directly or indirectly, is the most common mode of transmission in renal units. Aim: To investigate the source of an outbreak, and the route of transmission, of acute HCV infection in two Scottish patients occurring within eight weeks of receiving haemodialysis in the same unit while on holiday in Majorca. A molecular method to assess Phytophthora diversity in environmental samples

Current molecular detection methods for the genus Phytophthora are specific to a few key species rather than the whole genus and this is a recognized weakness of protocols for ecological studies and international plant health legislation. In the present study a molecular approach was developed to detect Phytophthora species in soil and water samples using novel sets of genus-specific primers designed against the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions. Scotland’s future in the United Kingdom seems to be uncertain. Even though a majority of Scottish people voted to remain in the UK in 2014, the EU referendum two years later fuelled the independence movement in Scotland. Scholars show that the Scottish independence referendum encouraged people to join political parties, particularly the Scottish National Party. This work focuses on young people. Party membership scholars agree that they are underrepresented in parties. Given that the SNP seem to be rather successful in appealing to young people, this thesis explores SNP youth membership and the reasons why young Scots make the decision to join the party. Is Andy Murray More British Than Scottish? It Depends on His Success! Game Outcome and the MOATing Effect

Prior research indicates that when we shared a part of a social identity with others, we tend to include or exclude them from our in-group depending on their success and failure. In this research, we investigated the extent to which this strategy (i.e., MOATing, “moving others away/toward the in-group”) is used for self-enhancement as compared to self-protection. Our experiment included a stereotype measure that assessed whether others were perceived as more typical of the in-group or the out-group. The results generally replicate those of prior research and suggest that MOATing primarily serves a self-enhancement function. We discuss theoretical and methodological implications.
Typology of think tanks: A comparative study in Finland and Scotland

This paper provides a comparative analysis of current Finnish and Scottish think tanks and reviews how think tanks in these countries have evolved, how think tanks seek to influence decision making and engage with their stakeholders. To address the ways of influence this paper looks how Finnish and Scottish think tanks describe themselves and how they use publications in their advocacy. Conducted content analysis indicates that usually registered association based Finnish think tanks are generally more research-focused organisations, who overall deploy more research publications for advocacy than the company based Scottish think tanks.
