SymbioGenomesDB: a database for the integration and access to knowledge on host-symbiont relationships.

2014

Symbiotic relationships occur naturally throughout the tree of life, either in a commensal, mutualistic or pathogenic manner. The genomes of multiple organisms involved in symbiosis are rapidly being sequenced and becoming available, especially those from the microbial world. Currently, there are numerous databases that offer information on specific organisms or models, but none offer a global understanding on relationships between organisms, their interactions and capabilities within their niche, as well as their role as part of a system, in this case, their role in symbiosis. We have developed the SymbioGenomesDB as a community database resource for laboratories which intend to investigat…

Interacting With Human Simulations: A Prototype Application

2019

The process of interacting and executing agent-based simulations of human phenomena is complex and difficult to follow for lay people. This is due to 1) limited access to computing power, 2) difficulty in writing analytics scripts and 3) the size and complexity of the simulation space. Consequently, agent-based simulations are normally used once to answer a limited set of questions instead of exploring all the potential paths that the model offers. Here, we describe an approach for developing user experiences that automate the analytic process and rely on interactive visualizations and life histories of societies and agents. This approach helps the user visualize simulation results, pin-poi…

RDB2OWL

2010

RDB2OWL is a simple approach of mapping relational databases into independently developed OWL ontologies. The approach is based on creating a mapping RDB schema, filling it with mapping information from which SQL scripts are generated that perform the instance-level transformation. We describe the RDB2OWL mapping schema and report on successful application of the technology to the migration of Latvian medical registries data.

Enabling Multimodal Interaction in XPL – the eXtensible Presentation Language

2007

This paper introduces the multimodal extension of the eXtensible Presentation architecture and Language (XPL), a framework aimed at streamlining multi-channel interface design process and enabling full component reuse. XPL incorporates a presentation language based on design pattern paradigm, which supplies a clear distinction between the presentation layer and the corresponding programming logic, promoting contents aggregation and a variety of event handlers described without relying on a (procedural) scripting language. In this paper, the design pattern concept is extended to voice-based interaction, and two verbal design pattern (VeDP) are introduced along to their visual counterparts. T…

ballaxy: web services for structural bioinformatics.

2014

Abstract Motivation: Web-based workflow systems have gained considerable momentum in sequence-oriented bioinformatics. In structural bioinformatics, however, such systems are still relatively rare; while commercial stand-alone workflow applications are common in the pharmaceutical industry, academic researchers often still rely on command-line scripting to glue individual tools together. Results: In this work, we address the problem of building a web-based system for workflows in structural bioinformatics. For the underlying molecular modelling engine, we opted for the BALL framework because of its extensive and well-tested functionality in the field of structural bioinformatics. The large …

On the relevance of script writing basics in audiovisual translation practice and training

2012

Audiovisual texts possess characteristics that clearly differentiate audiovisual translation from both oral and written translation, and prospective screen translators are usually taught about the issues that typically arise in audiovisual translation. This article argues for the development of an interdisciplinary approach that brings together Translation Studies and Film Studies, which would prepare future audiovisual translators to work with the nature and structure of a script in mind, in addition to the study of common and diverse translational aspects. Focusing on film, the article briefly discusses the nature and structure of scripts, and identifies key points in the development and …

Computer-supported collaborative inquiry learning and classroom scripts: Effects on help-seeking processes and learning outcomes

2011

This study examined the influence of classroom-script structure (high vs. low) during computer-supported collaborative inquiry learning on help-seeking processes and learning gains in 54 student pairs in secondary science education. Screen- and audio-capturing videos were analysed according to a model of the help-seeking process. Results show that the structure of the classroom script substantially affects patterns of student help seeking and learning gain in the classroom. Overall, students in the high-structured classroom-script condition sought less help but learnt more than those in the low-structured classroom-script condition. Reflection Assignment as a Tool to Support Students’ Metacognitive Awareness in the Context of Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning

2021

The present study explores the potential of a reflection assignment as a tool for supporting master’s degree students’ metacognitive skills in the context of computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL). The research question (RQ) is formulated as follows: How does a regularly submitted reflection assignment support the development of students’ individual metacognitive awareness in the context of CSCL? The empirical data is a text corpus (7878 words) extracted from individual students’ (N = 13) reflection assignments (N = 65) submitted during one semester. Qualitative content analysis was employed to analyze the data. The results demonstrate that by the end of the course, the students s…

Movie Script Similarity Using Multilayer Network Portrait Divergence

2020

International audience; This paper addresses the question of movie similarity through multilayer graph similarity measures. Recent work has shown how to construct multilayer networks using movie scripts, and how they capture different aspects of the stories. Based on this modeling, we propose to rely on the multilayer structure and compute different similarities, so we may compare movies, not from their visual content, summary, or actors, but actually from their own storyboard. We propose to do so using “portrait divergence”, which has been recently introduced to compute graph distances from summarizing graph characteristics. We illustrate our approach on the series of six Star Wars movies.

Psi4: an open-source ab initio electronic structure program

2011

The Psi4 program is a new approach to modern quantum chemistry, encompassing Hartree–Fock and density-functional theory to configuration interaction and coupled cluster. The program is written entirely in C++ and relies on a new infrastructure that has been designed to permit high-efficiency computations of both standard and emerging electronic structure methods on conventional and high-performance parallel computer architectures. Psi4 offers flexible user input built on the Python scripting language that enables both new and experienced users to make full use of the program's capabilities, and even to implement new functionality with moderate effort. To maximize its impact and usefulness, …
