Antecedents and implications of search engine use as prepurchase information tools

2009

The aim of this research is to analyse the antecedents and implications of using search engines as prepurchase information tools. The impact of internet use experience, internet shopping experience and online shopping motivations on the use of information provided by search engines in online purchases is analysed together with attitudinal changes deriving from search engine use (online purchase intention). Data analysis shows that the experiences as internet user and as internet shopper are negative key drivers of search engine use. The use of search engines in online purchase decisions is more likely in consumers with utilitarian shopping motivations than in consumers with hedonic shopping…

Enhanced query processing for NoSQL crowdsourcing systems

2014

In this paper, we provide a novel approach for effectively and efficiently support query processing tasks in novel NoSQL crowdsourcing systems. The idea of our method is to exploit the social knowledge available from reviews about products of any kind, freely provided by customers through specialized web sites. We thus define a NoSQL database system for large collections of product reviews, where queries can be expressed in terms of natural language sentences whose answers are modeled as lists of products ranked based on the relevance of reviews w.r.t. the natural language sentences. The best ranked products in the result list can be seen as the best hints for the user based on crowd opinio…

Hints from the Crowd: A Novel NoSQL Database

2013

The crowd can be an incredible source of information. In particular, this is true for reviews about products of any kind, freely provided by customers through specialized web sites. In other words, they are social knowledge, that can be exploited by other customers. The Hints From the Crowd HFC prototype, presented in this paper, is a NoSQL database system for large collections of product reviews; the database is queried by expressing a natural language sentence; the result is a list of products ranked based on the relevance of reviews w.r.t. the natural language sentence. The best ranked products in the result list can be seen as the best hints for the user based on crowd opinions the revi…

The 100 most-cited articles in orthodontics: A bibliometric study

2018

ABSTRACT Objectives: To identify and analyze the 100 most-cited articles in orthodontics indexed in the Web of Science Category of “Dental, Oral Surgery and Medicine” from 1946 to 2016. Materials and Methods: On hundred articles were identified in a search of the database of the ISI Web of Science and Journal Citation Reports, applying the truncated search term “orthodon*.” Records were manually refined and normalized to unify terms and to remove typographical, transcription, and/or indexing errors. Results: The 100 most-cited articles were published between 1946 and 2012, with numbers of citations ranging from 115 to 881. Of the 251 authors participating, 87.65% published a single work, wh…

On Approximate Jumbled Pattern Matching in Strings

2011

Given a string s, the Parikh vector of s, denoted p(s), counts the multiplicity of each character in s. Searching for a match of a Parikh vector q in the text s requires finding a substring t of s with p(t) = q. This can be viewed as the task of finding a jumbled (permuted) version of a query pattern, hence the term Jumbled Pattern Matching. We present several algorithms for the approximate version of the problem: Given a string s and two Parikh vectors u, v (the query bounds), find all maximal occurrences in s of some Parikh vector q such that u <= q <= v. This definition encompasses several natural versions of approximate Parikh vector search. We present an algorithm solving this problem …

Tailored retrieval of health information from the web for facilitating communication and empowerment of elderly people

2020

A patient, nowadays, acquires health information from the Web mainly through a “human-to-machine” communication process with a generic search engine. This, in turn, affects, positively or negatively, his/her empowerment level and the “human-to-human” communication process that occurs between a patient and a healthcare professional such as a doctor. A generic communication process can be modelled by considering its syntactic-technical, semantic-meaning, and pragmatic-effectiveness levels and an efficacious communication occurs when all the communication levels are fully addressed. In the case of retrieval of health information from the Web, although a generic search engine is able to work at…

Provision of tailored health information for patient empowerment: An initial study

2019

Search of "right" health information by patients/citizens is an important step towards their empowerment. The number of health information seekers on the Internet is steadily increasing over the years so it is crucial to understand their information needs and the challenges they face during the search process. However, generic search engines do not make any distinction among the users and overload them with the amount of information. Moreover, specific search engines/sites mostly work on medical literature and are built by hand. This paper analyses the possibility of providing the user with tailored web information by exploiting the web semantic capabilities and, in particular, those of sch…

Isospin triplet A=14: search for states with enhanced radii

2020

Abstract This article is devoted to study of isobar-analogue states 1− in triplet A=14: 14C-14N-14O. Previously signs of neutron halo in the 1−, 6.09 MeV state of 14C were obtained by two independent groups. In this article we propose to study neighbouring nuclei 14N and 14O using the Modified diffraction model (MDM) method and the method of Asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANC). Methods were applied to experimental differential cross sections of 14C(α,α)14C scattering and reactions 13C(3He,d)14N and 14N(3He,t)14O. MDM and ANC gave practically similar within errors radii for the studied 1− states: the 6.09 MeV state in 14C – 2.7±0.1 fm, the 8.06 MeV state in 14N – 2.7 ± 0.1 fm, the 5.…

r-Indexing the eBWT

2021

The extended Burrows Wheeler Transform (\(\mathrm {eBWT}\)) was introduced by Mantaci et al. [TCS 2007] to extend the definition of the \(\mathrm {BWT}\) to a collection of strings. In our prior work [SPIRE 2021], we give a linear-time algorithm for the \(\mathrm {eBWT}\) that preserves the fundamental property of the original definition (i.e., the independence from the input order). The algorithm combines a modification of the Suffix Array Induced Sorting (SAIS) algorithm [IEEE Trans Comput 2011] with Prefix Free Parsing [AMB 2019; JCB 2020]. In this paper, we show how this construction algorithm leads to r-indexing the \(\mathrm {eBWT}\), i.e., run-length encoded \(\mathrm {eBWT}\) and \(…

Proteomic analysis of the pinworm Syphacia muris (Nematoda: Oxyuridae), a parasite of laboratory rats

2012

Syphacia muris (Nematoda: Oxyuridae) is a ubiquitous nematode that commonly infects rats in the laboratory which can interfere in the development of biological assays. The somatic extract of S. muris adults collected from infected rats was investigated using a proteomic approach. A shot-gun liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry procedure was used. We used the MASCOT search engine (Matrix-Science) and ProteinPilot software v2.0 (Applied Biosystems) for the database search. A total of 359 proteins were accurately identified from the worms. The largest protein families consisted of metabolic enzymes and those involved in the nucleic metabolism and cell cycle. Proteins of transmembrane…
