Étude multi-échelles des précipitations et du couvert végétal au Cameroun : Analyses spatiales, tendances temporelles, facteurs climatiques et anthro…
2011
Due to its shape and location (2°N-13°N - 8°E-16°E; proximity of the Atlantic Ocean), Cameroon is characterized by a panel of cross-regional climate encountered widely in tropical Africa. Over the region, the decrease rainfall during the second half of the last century has been shown to be associated with stronger recurrence of drier periods, specifically in the core of the rainy season. These conditions have favored the degradation of vegetation cover, driven by socioeconomic and demographic constraints. The substantial impacts on human activities and local society highlight the need to better understand how climate and environmental dynamics do interact locally. The aim of this study is t…
Intraseasonal descriptors and rainfall extremes in austral summer over South Africa : Observations and Meso-scale modelling
2022
Rainfall extremes are of major and increasing importance in semi-arid countries and their variability has strong implications for water resource and climate impacts on the local societies and environment. Here, we examine intraseasonal descriptors (ISDs) and wet extremes in austral summer rainfall (November−February) over South Africa (SA). Using daily observations from 225 rain gauges and ERA5 reanalysis between 1979 and 2015, we propose a novel typology of wet extreme events based on their spatial fraction, thus differentiating large- and small-scale extremes. Long-term variability of both types of extreme rainfall events is then extensively discussed in the context of ISDs. Following the…
Climats tropicaux d'aujourd'hui à demain : variabilité et changements
2008
Present and future tropical climates : their climate variability and their climate changes The oriffttality of tropical climates is re-examined under the light of climate variability and climate change, both present and future . The interannual variability of rainfall is on average larger in the tropics than in the extra-tropics, but it is also spatially more contrasted. Human communities have often responded to this constraint through efficient coping strategies. The regions showing the most variable climate do not necessarily have lower population densities, an indication that in the long run variability is not decisive. However, the recent demographic growth of these regions is often low…
Définition d’un événement de poussières désertiques au Sahel : apport de nouvelles mesures de PM10 au Burkina Faso.
2015
This study isdedicated to the desert dust of the dry season in an inhabited Sahelian rural area whose populations are widely exposed tosanitary risks such as meningitis outbreaks (Martiny & Chiapello, 2013). Here, the objective is to give a definition of a dust“event”, a concept describing the dustiest moments in a dusty environment, but that remains rather unclear, notably becauseof the lack of ground-truth measurements. The analysis of new PM10 measurements in Burkina Faso has enabled us to definethe dust events as episodes which experience concentrations greater than 189μg/m3 for at least 10h. Five types of dust eventshave been defined depending on the concentrations measured. On the fir…
Étude climatique de la mousson vietnamienne et applications à la prévision saisonnière
2008
This thesis aims at documenting the physical and dynamic processes associated with the monsoon circulation of Vietnamese regional and synoptic scales, to explore the predictability of its key components and develop statistical and dynamical methods for forecasting the monsoon onset and seasonal. It is divided into two parts. The first part is, in fact, a climate study based on analysis of diagnostic data: - first, the monthly rainfall and temperature data station over the period 1960-2000 are used to analyze the cycle and the variability of these fields on the seven traditional climatic regions of Vietnam using the observed precipitation in various stations. Classifications and correlations…
Persistent establishment of a tropical disease in Europe: the preadaptation of schistosomes to overwinter
2019
International audience; Background: Global changes promote the spread of infectious diseases worldwide. In this context, tropical uro-genital schistosomiasis is now permanently established in Corsica since its first emergence in 2013. The local persistence of the tropical pathogens (schistosomes) responsible for urogenital schistosomiasis at such latitudes might be explained by (i) the presence of its intermediate host, the snail Bulinus truncatus, (ii) the recurrent local reseeding of schistosomes by their vertebrate hosts (either human or animal) every summer, and/or (iii) the maintenance and survival of schistosomes within their snail hosts over winter. Methods: In this study we conducted…

First-Hand Becomes Second-Hand: André Brink's A Dry White Season
2009
This paper offers a reading of André Brink's novel A Dry White Season in relation to his own essay The Novel:. Language and Narrative From Cervantes to Calvino. The aim is to demonstrate that Brink's theory can help highlight aspects of his apartheid writings which have often been neglected. The paper explores, in particular, the metafictional features of a novel more famous for its committed nature than for its self-reflexivity
The Automated Emotional Music Generator With Emotion and Season Features
2013
Nowadays, there are various types of automated music generating systems to automatically compose music clips instantly; however, those randomly-generated music clips still sounded uncomfortable and discordant. This paper attempts to add with emotion and season features to assist automated music generating systems based on algorithm, and then tries to make all generative music clips sound with harmonious and emotional meaning to listeners. The automated music generator used in this topic is not only based on algorithm but also adopts Thayer’s emotional model as well as four season factors, so all music clips will not only express unique music emotions but also indicate all seasons which may …
Endotyping allergic rhinitis in children: A machine learning approach.
2021
Introduction: The diversity of allergic rhinitis (AR) phenotypes is particularly evident in childhood, suggesting the need to analyze and identify new approaches to capture such clinical heterogeneity. Nasal cytology (NC) is a very useful diagnostic tool for identifying and quantifying nasal inflammation. Data-driven approaches such as latent class analysis (LCA) assign subjects to classes based on their characteristics. We hypothesized that LCA based on NC, including the assessment of neutrophils, eosinophils, and mast cells, may be helpful for identifying AR endotypes in children. Methods: A total of 168 children were enrolled. Sociodemographic characteristics and detailed medical history…
