The interaction of amino acids with the major constituents of natural waters at different ionic strengths

2000

Abstract The interaction of amino acids with the major constituents of natural waters has been studied potentiometrically by determining protonation constants at different ionic strengths (e.g., I ≤5.6 mol (kg H 2 O) −1 (NaCl)) and in artificial seawater (containing Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Cl − and SO 4 2− ) at different salinities. For glycine determinations in mixed NaCl–MgCl 2 , electrolyte solutions were also performed. The data included in this work, together with some already published, make it possible to calculate parameters for dependence on ionic strength using different models, i.e. an extended Debye–Huckel type equation and Pitzer equations. The results can be interpreted b…

Speciation of low molecular weight ligands in natural fluids: protonation constants and association of open chain polyamines with the major component…

2000

Abstract The interaction of five open chain polyamines (ethylenediamine (en), diethylenetriamine (dien), trietylenetetramine (trien), tetraethylenepentamine (tetren), spermine (sper)) with the major components of seawater was studied potentiometrically at 25°C, in an artificial seawater (containing Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl− and SO42−) at different salinities (5–45‰). Potentiometric data were interpreted in terms of both the apparent protonation constants of polyamines and the formation constants of complexes formed by unprotonated or protonated amines and the cation and the anion of seawater (the inorganic content of seawater being considered as a single 1:1 salt). Some empirical relationshi…

A 45-year sub-annual reconstruction of seawater temperature in the Bay of Brest, France, using the shell oxygen isotope composition of the bivalve Gl…

2020

A reconstruction of sea surface temperature (SST) spanning 45 years (1966–2011) was developed from δ18O obtained from the aragonitic shells of Glycymeris glycymeris, collected from the Bay of Brest, France. Bivalve sampling was undertaken monthly between 2014 and 2015 using a dredge. In total, 401 live specimens and 243 articulated paired valves from dead specimens were collected, of which 24 individuals were used to reconstruct SST. Temperatures determined using the palaeotemperature equation of Royer et al. compared well with observed SST during the growing season between 1998 and 2010 (Pearson’s correlation: p = 0.002, r = 0.760). Furthermore, a significant negative correlation was foun…

Different methods for soluble salt removal tested on late-Roman cooking ware from a submarine excavation at the island of Pantelleria (Sicily, Italy)

2014

Abstract This paper deals with the comparative evaluation of different procedures of salt extraction designed for archaeological ceramics from submarine burial environments. The experimental work was carried out on a particular type of late-Roman cooking ware finds (Pantellerian ware) found in a shipwreck near the shoreline of the Island of Pantelleria (Sicily). The studied ceramic test-pieces were first recognised in terms of bulk characteristics (mineralogy, petrography and chemistry). SEM-EDS observation allowed verification of the presence of various secondary minerals at the surface and in the pore spaces formed after the prolonged permanence in seawater under oxidising or reducing con…

Biomethylation in the Southern Ocean and its contribution to the geochemical cycle of trace elements in Antarctica

2001

Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on biomethylation, which is a chemical process that leads to volatile alkylated compounds of elements, and is the only substantial alkylation process for some heavy metals in the environment. Volatile compounds dissolved in the ocean are transferred into the atmosphere. This is an important mechanism in the geochemical cycle of elements that contributes significantly to the global distribution of individual substances. Most of the methylated compounds are not very stable in the atmosphere because they can decompose. Antarctica and its surrounding polar ocean is one of the few areas on earth that is not directly influenced by anthropogenic sources and, …

Emission of iodine-containing volatiles by selected microalgae species

2014

In this study we present the results of an emission study of different phytoplankton samples in aqueous media treated with elevated ozone levels. Halocarbon measurements show that the samples tested released bromoform and different iodocarbons, including iodomethane, iodochloromethane and diiodomethane. Iodide and iodate levels in the liquid phase were representative of concentrations of surface water in a natural environment. Measurement of volatile iodine (I2) emissions from two diatom samples (Mediopyxis helysia and Porosira glacialis) and the background sample (F/2 medium from filtered natural seawater) showed that the quantity of evolved I2 depends on the ozone concentration in the air…

Foam effect on the sea surface emissivity in the 8–14μm region

2007

[1] The effect of foam on the sea surface emission has been studied in the microwave region, but its effect on thermal infrared emissivity and temperature has not been sufficiently analyzed in the literature. This paper presents thermal infrared measurements of foam-covered seawaters carried out under controlled conditions using a multichannel radiometer working in the 8–14 μm region. The experimental data show a negligible foam effect at low observation angles but a significant increase of emissivity with foam at angles above 45°. Differences between foam and foam-free emissivities are about +0.04 for observation angles of 65°, depending slightly on the radiometric spectral band. The effec…

Vibrio agarivorans sp. nov., a novel agarolytic marine bacterium.

2002

It is proposed that the new Vibrio species Vibrio agarivorans accommodates two agarolytic, halophilic, fermentative bacterial strains isolated from Mediterranean sea water. The cells were gram-negative, oxidase-positive, polarly flagellated bacilli that fermented glucose without gas production and that produced no decarboxylases. They used a wide range of compounds as sole carbon and energy sources. The DNA G+C content was 44.8 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on complete 16S and 23S rDNA sequences revealed that the strains belong to the gamma-Proteobacteria, and are specifically related to Vibrio species. Their nearest relatives were species of the Vibrio fischeri group, sharing 16S rDNA …

Decontamination of Seawater in a Harbor: Case Study of Potential Bioterrorism Attack

2021

Bioterrorism attack to large harbors is likely, simply by the discharge of intentionally infected ship’s ballast water. Therefore, the ships must be equipped with the control probes of extensive microbial growth in the ballast water tanks to avoid such a scenario. In case of intentional discharge of ballast water containing Bacillus anthracis, a two-dimensional disinfection of the harbor’s seawater surface can be made using hydrophobic or surface-active disinfectant, by using humic acid with trimethylammonium groups, concentrating in the monomolecular layer on water–air interphase. It will prevent the formation and dispersion of the deadly bioaerosol to atmosphere after a bioterrorism attac…

Dynamics of particulate major and trace elements in the lower reaches of the Daugava River and adjacent area of the Gulf of Riga (Baltic Sea).

2004

Suspended particulate matter (SPM) was collected in the freshwater-seawater mixing zone in the lower reaches of the Daugava River (Latvia) and adjacent marine area, during five cruises in 1998-2001. The study focused on biogeochemical phase exchange processes. SPM in the freshwater was found to be mainly allochthonous with a high content of organic matter, Mn and sorbed phosphate. Property-salinity plots suggested flocculation of humic-Fe complexes across the salinity gradient. The variability of sorbed phosphate was related to particulate Fe, although no dependence on pH and ionic strength was observed. The Mn contents of SPM mainly follow conservative mixing, but there are also indication…
