Bioactive compounds from brown algae inhabiting the north-western Mediterranean Sea

2021

Marine algae produce a great amount of secondary metabolites (e.g. terpenoids, fatty acids, steroids, polysaccharides and polyphenols) to face environmental stressors they are exposed to, but also to defend themselves from biological pressures such as competitors, pathogens, grazers and epiphytes. Over the last decade, secondary metabolites isolated from brown algae and phenolic compounds, in particular, are receiving increasing attention due to their putative ecological roles, and several biological properties. Brown fucoid algae of the genus Cystoseira sensu latu (Sargassaceae) and Dictyotaceae produce a wide variety of secondary metabolites which have been investigated mainly for their d…

Total phenolic content in brown algae from the Sicilian coast

2019

Phlorotannins are polyphenolic secondary metabolites found in almost all brown algae that function as defense against grazers, pathogens and epiphytes but are also involved in photoprotection mechanisms. These com- pounds, produced in the Golgi apparatus, are accumulated in cytoplasm, within vesicules called physodes, or bound to the cell wall. The concentration of phlorotannins differs within and between species, shows geograph- ical variations but may be also affected by abiotic or biotic factors. We present here an overview of the studies carried out on total phenolic content in brown algae collected along the north-western coast of Sicily. The aims of these studies were in particular a)…

Priority areas for the conservation of Atlantic forest large mammals

2009

Large mammal faunas in tropical forest landscapes are widely affected by habitat fragmentation and hunting, yet the environmental determinants of their patterns of abundance remain poorly understood at large spatial scales. We analysed population abundance and biomass of 31 species of medium to large-bodied mammal species at 38 Atlantic forest sites (including three islands, 26 forest fragments and six continuous forest sites) as related to forest type, level of hunting pressure and forest fragment size using ANCOVAs. We also derived a novel measure of mammal conservation importance for each site based on a "Mammalian Conservation Priority index" (MPi) which incorporates information on spec…

Spatio-temporal patterns and drivers of secondary succession in a Mediterranean landscape

2017

In recent years, many Mediterranean agricultural lands have been abandoned, reforested, rewilded and ecologically restored, creating different templates and trajectories for the development of secondary succession. Our objective was to verify whether past legacies of woody vegetation (remnant forest, shrub patches and reforestations) influenced the current spatial pattern of woody cover in a mid-successional Mediterranean area, identifying spatial cold and hotspots (i.e: low/slow or high/fast cover increase) and looking for footprints of seed-disperser and herbivore-mediated processes at landscape and local scales. The study took place in three 500x200 m plots in a formerly managed and part…

Cattle seed dispersal services and perspectives for management in a high biodiversity Mediterranean silvopastoral system

2019

In Mediterranean traditional silvopastoral systems are composed mostly with oaks, with an overall lack of fleshy-fruited species, key elements in Mediterranean flora. A mixed composition may enhance biodiversity and diversify fodder for livestock, and at the same time guarantee higher resistance, resilience and a richer network of ecological interactions. Here we investigated the interactions of cattle and native fleshy-fruited species in a high biodiversity silvopastoral system inside the last large forest remnant in western Sicily, Italy. Along two fruiting seasons we used sampling transects covering the gradient from the forest to the pastureland and analyzed 132 cattle dungs, of which 4…

Progressive and predicative constructions with gerund in Romance. A contrastive analysis

2018

Progressive and predicative constructions formed with gerund are present in numerous Romance languages. In the literature, these two types of construction have often been considered as syntactically analogous. Through the application of syntactic tests, this study will show that, despite a number of similarities, progressive and predicative constructs with gerund are characterized by a different structure.

Hypobetalipoproteinemia: genetics, biochemistry, and clinical spectrum.

2011

Hypobetalipoproteinemias (HBL) represent a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by reduced plasma levels of total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) and apolipoprotein B (apoB) below the 5th percentile of the distribution in the population. HBL are defined as primary or secondary according to the underlying causes. Primary monogenic HBL are caused by mutations in several known genes (APOB, PCSK9, MTP, SARA2) or mutations in genes not yet identified. Familial hypobetalipoproteinemia (FHBL) is the most frequent monogenic form of HBL with a dominant mode of inheritance. It may be due to loss-of-function mutations in APOB or, less frequently, in PCSK9 genes.…

Canine pancytopoenia and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis.

2018

Leishmaniasis and rickettsial diseases are endemic and common in Mediterranean countries and so, as in humans, these diseases could be an important cause of HLH in dogs and may respond to similar medications. In conclusion, we think that the diagnosis of HLH should be considered in dogs with pancytopenia and, in selected cases, immunosuppressive treatment might be warranted.

Oral findings in secondary syphilis

2018

Background Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by Treponema pallidum. However, there are of hematogenic and vertical transmission. All health care professionals must be aware of the manifestations of this condition, such as oral lesions. Objectives This study to analyze and compare four clinical cases of syphilis that were diagnosed based on lesions in the oral cavity with published literature. Material and Methods Four patients with a confirmed sorologic and clinical diagnosis of syphilis were examined, confirmated from manifestation of oral lesions together with analysis of serological laboratory tests and histopathological analyses. Results Lesions were found in classic sit…
