Calcium-dependent conformational changes of membrane-bound Ebola fusion peptide drive vesicle fusion

AbstractThe fusogenic subdomain of the Ebola virus envelope glycoprotein is an internal sequence located ca. 20 residues downstream the N-terminus of the glycoprotein transmembrane subunit. Partitioning of the Ebola fusion peptide into membranes containing phosphatidylinositol in the absence of Ca2+ stabilizes an α-helical conformation, and gives rise to vesicle efflux but not vesicle fusion. In the presence of millimolar Ca2+ the membrane-bound peptide adopts an extended β-structure, and induces inter-vesicle mixing of lipids. The peptide conformational polymorphism may be related to the flexibility of the virus–cell intermembrane fusogenic complex.

A suggested role for secondary flow in the stimulation of the cochlear hair cell

The mammalian Corti organ and the reptilian basilar papilla are structures with a curved surface, which vibrate in a fluid medium. This paper is concerned with the role played by the geometric shape of these organs in cochlear hydrodynamics. In association with vibrating structures such as these organs, it can be expected that a stationary current will be initiated due to a nonlinear phenomenon in the boundary layer known as secondary flow. This phenomenon may explain the source of the mechanical nonlinearity in the cochlea.

Approach to mathematics in textbooks at tertiary level – exploring authors’ views about their texts

The aim of this article is to present and discuss some results from an inquiry into mathematics textbooks authors’ visions about their texts and approaches they choose when new concepts are introduced. Authors’ responses are discussed in relation to results about students’ difficulties with approaching calculus reported by previous research. A questionnaire has been designed and sent to seven authors of the most used calculus textbooks in Norway and four authors have responded. The responses show that the authors mainly view teaching in terms of transmission so they focus mainly on getting the mathematical content correct and ‘clear’. A posteriori error estimates for Webster's equation in wave propagation

We consider a generalised Webster’s equation for describing wave propagation in curved tubular structures such as variable diameter acoustic wave guides. Webster’s equation in generalised form has been rigorously derived in a previous article starting from the wave equation, and it approximates cross-sectional averages of the propagating wave. Booster vaccination after neonatal priming with acellular pertussis vaccine.

After a birth dose of acellular pertussis (aP) and diphtheria (DT)aP-hepatitis B virus (HBV)-inactivated polio vaccine (IPV)/ Haemophilus influenza type b (Hib) at 2, 4, and 6 months, a booster dose of DTaP-HBV-IPV/Hib at 12 to 23 months induced strong anti-pertussis booster responses. Thus, neonatal aP priming did not lead to immune tolerance to pertussis antigens. However, it elicited bystander interference on HBV, Hib, and diphtheria responses.

The estimation of velocity profile in turbulent open channels is a difficult task due to the significant effects of the secondary flow. The present paper investigates the mechanism of the velocity-dip phenomenon, whereby the location of the maximum velocity appears to be below the free surface. Previous studies conducted in straight channels relate the mechanism of the velocity-dip phenomenon to secondary flow induced by anisotropy of turbulence.
