Self-Organization Pathways and Spatial Heterogeneity in Insulin Amyloid Fibril Formation
2009
At high temperature and low pH, the protein hormone insulin is highly prone to form amyloid fibrils, and for this reason it is widely used as a model system to study fibril formation mechanisms. In this work, we focused on insulin aggregation mechanisms occurring in HCl solutions (pH 1.6) at 60 degrees C. By means of in situ Thioflavin T (ThT) staining, the kinetics profiles were characterized as a function of the protein concentration, and two concurrent aggregation pathways were pointed out, being concentration dependent. In correspondence to these pathways, different morphologies of self-assembled protein molecules were detected by atomic force microscopy images also evidencing the prese…
Further characterisation of the 91500 zircon crystal
2004
This paper reports the results from a second characterisation of the 91500 zircon, including data from electron probe microanalysis, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and laser fluorination analyses. The focus of this initiative was to establish the suitability of this large single zircon crystal for calibrating in situ analyses of the rare earth elements and oxygen isotopes, as well as to provide working values for key geochemical systems. In addition to extensive testing of the chemical and structural homogeneity of this sample, the occurrence of banding in 91500 in both backscattered electron and cathodolumines…
Teacher Training in Linguistic Diversity within Inclusive Education: Cooperation between Non-governmental Non-profit Organizations and Educational In…
2020
Inclusive education from a service learning secondary education proposal
2017
This project is an attempt to improve the academic inclusion of students in a group of curricular diversification of compulsory secondary education. The project to set up a children's theater show has made possible to put into practice the skills and stimulate learning: inclusion, coexistence, teamwork, equal opportunities. This experience has meant a meeting between formal and non-formal education and involving students in the reality of their environment. It has become an opportunity to involve students in their community and to foster intergenerational contact. The students participating in the experience show their satisfaction with the work done. Thus, they collaborated in the learning…
Use of ICT in the teaching of art and design in the context of secondary education in Italy
2019
Currently, we are participating in the discovery and use of different multimedia resources, digital platforms and technological devices that are making inroads into the educational system. This study deals with the use of new multimedia technologies, specifically developed in a Secondary School of First Cycle in Sicily in the province of Agrigento. The purpose of this communication is to present partial results of a broader research project on the use of ICT in teaching art and design in the context of secondary education in Sicily with the intention to explore the impact on the methodology multimedia teaching resources and technological devices. We intend to develop an innovative methodolo…
Bioconjugates of 1’-Aminoferrocene-1-carboxylic Acid with (S)-3-Amino-2-methylpropanoic Acid and L-Alanine
2010
Formal CH 2 insertion in bioconjugates composed of 1'-aminoferrocene-1-carboxylic acid (Fca) and alanine Boc-Ala-Fca-Ala-OCH 3 gives Fca bioconjugates with the β-amino acid (S)-3-amino-2-methylpropanoic acid (Aib). The novel homologous conjugates of ferrocene were fully characterized by spectroscopic and analytical methods. NMR, CD and IR spectroscopy in concert with DFT calculations suggest that the formal "L-Ala-to-(S)-β-Aib mutations" can exert ferrocene helix inversion due to the different stereogenic carbon atoms of L -Ala and (S)-β-Aib. Furthermore, the mutation (de-)stabilizes the conserved secondary structure with two intramolecular hydrogen bonds, depending on the "mutation site". …
MMGBSA As a Tool To Understand the Binding Affinities of Filamin–Peptide Interactions
2013
Filamins (FLN) are large dimeric proteins that cross-link actin and work as important scaffolds in human cells. FLNs consist of an N-terminal actin-binding domain followed by 24 immunoglobulin-like domains (FLN1-24). FLN domains are divided into four subgroups based on their amino acid sequences. One of these subgroups, including domains 4, 9, 12, 17, 19, 21, and 23, shares a similar ligand-binding site between the β strands C and D. Several proteins, such as integrins β2 and β7, glycoprotein Ibα (GPIbα), and migfilin, have been shown to bind to this site. Here, we computationally estimated the binding free energies of filamin A (FLNa) subunits with bound peptides using the molecular mechan…
