C-terminal amino acids are essential for human heat shock protein 70 dimerization
2014
The human inducible heat shock protein 70 (hHsp70), which is involved in several major pathologies, including neurodegenerative disorders and cancer, is a key molecular chaperone and contributes to the proper protein folding and maintenance of a large number of protein structures. Despite its role in disease, the current structural knowledge of hHsp70 is almost exclusively based on its Escherichia coli homolog, DnaK, even though these two proteins only share ~50 % amino acid identity. For the first time, we describe a complete heterologous production and purification strategy that allowed us to obtain a large amount of soluble, full-length, and non-tagged hHsp70. The protein displayed both …
THE EFFECT OF INBOUND, OUTBOUND AND COUPLED INNOVATION ON PERFORMANCE
2012
The focus of this paper is on exploring linkages among Open Innovation practices and firm performance. While, in the last ten years, a certain amount of papers facing such issue has been published, most of them treat inbound, outbound, and coupled innovation practice processes separately respect to different dimensions of innovation and financial performance. We argue that the concurrent influence of specific Open Innovation practices on both innovation and economic-financial firms' performance has not been investigated so far into the literature and it is of primary managerial importance. We empirically test our framework on a sample of 105 companies listed on the Industrial Machinery and…
Repercussions of Evolutionism in the Spanish Natural History Society
2001
In 1871, during the markedly libe ral environment created by the Sexennial Revolution (1868-1874), the Spanish Natural History Society (SEHN) was founded) It was established at the instigation of an active group of naturalists whose primary objectives were to promote the study of Natural History in Spain, discuss the most relevant problems relating to this discipline, and have a vehicle through which to publish their work. This early initiative was highly successful, with the number of members in the first three decades fluctuating between 290-300 and, in some years, exceeding four hundred. University professors and teachers from the Faculties of Science, Medicine and Pharmacy; researchers …
Total Synthesis of the Antifungal Natural Product Mollisin
2013
Mollisin, a bioactive polyketide secondary metabolite of the fungus Mollisia caesia, was synthesized in nine linear steps from commercially available 2,6-dimethyl-γ-pyrone. A key transformation in this first total synthesis of mollisin was the ipso substitution of an arylstannane, which permitted the otherwise cumbersome introduction of the characteristic dichloroacetyl moiety. The fungal fungicide was obtained in an overall yield of 9 %.
Chemical-Biology of Natural Products from Medicinal Plants for Cancer Therapy
2010
Secondary metabolites are produced by an organism for defense towards competitors, herbivores, and pathogens. They also act as signal compounds to attract animals for pollination and seed dispersal. Fortunately, many secondary metabolites from plants exhibit diverse pharmacological features. Exploitation of these beneficial effects is the primary goal of researchers working in the area of molecular pharmacology of natural products. Natural products are among the major players in pharmacology in general and in cancer therapy in particular. A considerable portion of antitumor agents currently used in the clinic are of natural origin (e.g. Vinca alkaloids, taxanes, podophyllotoxin, camptotheci…
Is secondary hyperparathyroidism-related myelofibrosis a negative prognostic factor for kidney transplant outcome?
2011
Secondary hyperparathyroidism (HP) presenting with hypocalcemia and subsequent increased parathormone (PTH), is mainly identified in patients with chronic renal failure, which has been associated with variable degrees of bone marrow fibrosis. For suitable patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), kidney transplantation is recognized as the therapy of choice, being superior to dialysis in terms of quality of life and long-term mortality risk; in this regard interesting data show that increased time on dialysis prior to kidney transplantation is associated with decreased graft and patient survival. In our opinion an important and until now underestimated determinant of graft survival is t…
Controlled education of patients after stroke (ceops)-nurse-led multimodal and long-term interventional program involving a patient''s caregiver to o…
2018
Background Setting up a follow-up secondary prevention program after stroke is difficult due to motor and cognitive impairment, but necessary to prevent recurrence and improve patients’ quality of life. To involve a referent nurse and a caregiver from the patient’s social circle in nurse-led multimodal and long-term management of risk factors after stroke could be an advantage due to their easier access to the patient and family. The aim of this study is to compare the benefit of optimized follow up by nursing personnel from the vascular neurology department including therapeutic follow up, and an interventional program directed to the patient and a caregiving member of their social circle,…
Boron determination in liver tissue by combining quantitative neutron capture radiography (QNCR) and histological analysis for BNCT treatment plannin…
2011
The typical primary malignancies of the liver are hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma, whereas colorectal liver metastases are the most frequently occurring secondary tumors. In many cases, only palliative treatment is possible. Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) represents a technique that potentially destroys tumor tissue selectively by use of externally induced, locally confined secondary particle irradiation. In 2001 and 2003, BNCT was applied to two patients with colorectal liver metastases in Pavia, Italy. To scrutinize the rationale of BNCT, a clinical pilot study on patients with colorectal liver metastases was carried out at the University of Mainz. The distribution o…
On two topological cardinal invariants of an order-theoretic flavour
2012
Noetherian type and Noetherian $\pi$-type are two cardinal functions which were introduced by Peregudov in 1997, capturing some properties studied earlier by the Russian School. Their behavior has been shown to be akin to that of the \emph{cellularity}, that is the supremum of the sizes of pairwise disjoint non-empty open sets in a topological space. Building on that analogy, we study the Noetherian $\pi$-type of $\kappa$-Suslin Lines, and we are able to determine it for every $\kappa$ up to the first singular cardinal. We then prove a consequence of Chang's Conjecture for $\aleph_\omega$ regarding the Noetherian type of countably supported box products which generalizes a result of Lajos S…
