This paper is aimed to analyze, in a preliminar way, the ancient road system in a selected area of the Northern Sicily, between Segesta and Trapani. The focus are the connections between main roads (the so-called via Valeria and the hypothetical pathways) and settlements, the morphological context and the most significant toponyms from the archaeological point of view. The research is carried out by the archaeological data, contemporary and historical cartography, and it is also focused on the secondary roads.

Status of the project TRAPSENSOR: Performance of the laser-desorption ion source

Abstract Penning traps provide mass measurements on atomic nuclei with the highest accuracy and sensitivity. Depending on the experiment and on the physics goal, a relative mass uncertainty varying from 10 −7 to below 10 −11 is required. Regarding sensitivity, the use of only one ion for the measurement is crucial, either to perform mass measurements on superheavy elements (SHE), or to reach δ m / m ≈ 10 - 11 in order to contribute to the direct determination of the mass of the electron-antineutrino with accurate mass measurements on specific nuclei. A cylindrical Penning trap for capture, mass selective cooling, and bunching of radioactive ion beams

Abstract A Penning trap ion accumulator, cooler, and buncher for low-energy ion beams has been developed for the ISOLTRAP mass spectrometer at ISOLDE/CERN. A cylindrical electrode configuration is used for the creation of a nested trapping potential. This is required for efficient accumulation of externally produced ions and for high-mass selectivity by buffer gas cooling. The design goal of a mass resolving power of about 1 × 10 5 has been achieved. Isobar separation has been demonstrated for radioactive rare-earth ion beams delivered by the ISOLDE on-line mass separator.

Laser photodetachment of radioactive $^{128}$I$^−$

International audience; The first experimental investigation of the electron affinity (EA) of a radioactive isotope has been conducted at the CERN-ISOLDE radioactive ion beam facility. The EA of the radioactive iodine isotope (128)I (t (1/2) = 25 min) was determined to be 3.059 052(38) eV. The experiment was conducted using the newly developed Gothenburg ANion Detector for Affinity measurements by Laser PHotodetachment (GANDALPH) apparatus, connected to a CERN-ISOLDE experimental beamline. Development of the Jyväskylä microbeam facility

Abstract A new microbeam facility is being constructed at the 1.7 MV Pelletron Accelerator in Jyvaskyla. The facility is designed for easy upgrading and incorporates a number of innovative features. Initially, it is based on a Heidelberg doublet with a design capability of a 3 × 5 μm beamspot at PIXE intensities and later upgraded to nanobeam performance. A thermal-expansion compensated rigid frame mounted on a mechanically isolated floor section is used to support the ion optical components. Time-of-flight telescope for heavy-ion RBS

Abstract This paper describes a time-of-flight (TOF) spectrometer for Heavy-Ion Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (HI-RBS) recently installed at IMEC for thin film analysis. The TOF telescope allows the use of ion beams heavier than He, with advantages in terms of depth and mass resolution and sensitivity compared to conventional RBS based on planar Si detectors. The start timing-signal is produced by the secondary electrons emitted from a thin C foil when traversed by a backscattered ion; the electrons are deflected in an electrostatic mirror towards a Micro-channel plate (MCP) assembly which provides a fast timing response. Versatile use of ion beams for diffusion studies by the modified radiotracer technique

Abstract In the modified radiotracer technique ion beams within a broad energy range are employed. They include energetic light particles ensuring radioactive isotope production via nuclear reactions, keV-ion implantation of radiotracers and sputtering by low energy heavy ions for depth profiling. If the involved ion–solid interactions are properly taken into account, the technique provides an effective means for solid-state diffusion studies under demanding conditions. We present ONIOM calculations using B3LYP/d95(d,p) as the high level and AM1 as the medium level on parallel β-sheets containing four strands of Ac-AAAAAA-NH2 capped with either Ac-AAPAAA-NH2 or Ac-AAAPAA-NH2. Because Pro can form H-bonds from only one side of the peptide linkage (that containing the C═O H-bond acceptor), only one of the two Pro-containing strands can favorably add to the sheet on each side. Surprisingly, when the sheet is capped with AAPAAA-NH2 at one edge, the interaction between the cap and sheet is slightly more stabilizing than that of another all Ala strand. Industrial loans and market structure

Abstract Based on the observation that financing is one of the main obstacles to create new firms, this paper deals with the interactions between the market structure of both the banking sector and the borrowing industries. We consider that firms’ installation costs are financed by means of industrial loans from specialized banks. With endogenous entry in banking activity as well as in the borrowing industry, we find that a natural oligopoly emerges in both sectors if the entry cost in the industrial sector is small enough, relative to the banks’ entry cost.
