Human milk and mucosa-associated disaccharides impact on cultured infant fecal microbiota
2020
Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are a mixture of structurally diverse carbohydrates that contribute to shape a healthy gut microbiota composition. The great diversity of the HMOs structures does not allow the attribution of specific prebiotic characteristics to single milk oligosaccharides. We analyze here the utilization of four disaccharides, lacto-N-biose (LNB), galacto-N-biose (GNB), fucosyl-alpha 1,3-GlcNAc (3FN) and fucosyl-alpha 1,6-GlcNAc (6FN), that form part of HMOs and glycoprotein structures, by the infant fecal microbiota. LNB significantly increased the total levels of bifidobacteria and the species Bifidobacterium breve and Bifidobacterium bifidum. The Lactobacillus genus …

Exercise cardiac power and the risk of heart failure in men : A population-based follow-up study
2022
Background Little is known about exercise cardiac power (ECP), defined as the ratio of directly measured maximal oxygen uptake with peak systolic blood pressure during exercise on heart failure (HF) risk. We examined the association of ECP and the risk of HF. Methods This was a population-based cohort study of 2351 men from eastern Finland. The average time to follow-up was 25 years. Participants participated at baseline in an exercise stress test. A total of 313 cases of HF occurred. Results Men with low ECP (13.92 mL/mmHg, highest quartile), after adjusting for age. Low ECP was associated with a 1.96-fold risk (95%CI: 1.38 − 2.78, p < 0.001) of HF after additional adjustment for conventio…

Effects of heat treatment and acid-induced gelation on aroma release from flavoured skim milk
2010
Abstract Time dependent aroma release was studied in skim milk, heated skim milk as well as in acid-induced gels derived from them using static headspace – gas chromatography analysis. A variable order kinetic model was fitted to experimental data and was used to determine headspace equilibrium concentration and initial rates of release. When compared to water, retention in milk based matrices was increased for hydrophobic aroma compounds, while it was decreased for more hydrophilic volatiles. Acid gelation reduced the initial rate of aroma release by a factor varying from 2.0 to 3.8, depending on the compound. Positive deviation from the first order kinetics was observed and suggests that …
Genetics of familial hypobetalipoproteinemia
2007
Primary hypobetalipoproteinemias include three monogenic disorders: the relatively frequent codominant familial hypobetalipoproteinemia (FHBL), the rare recessive conditions abetalipoproteinemia (ABL) and chylomicron retention disease (CMRD). Approximately 50% of FHBL patients are carriers of mutations in the APOB gene, mostly causing the formation of truncated forms of ApoB. In some kindred, FHBL is linked to a locus on chromosome 3 (3p21), but the candidate gene is still unknown. Recently, a FHBL-like phenotype was observed in carriers of mutations of the proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) gene causing loss-of-function of the encoded protein, a proprotein convertase tha…
